Position summary The Director, Research and Innovation is responsible for contributing to and promoting the future growth strategy of innovative research, compliance and reporting at Federation University Australia. This will be achieved by working closely with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) by providing direction and leadership and building capacity for functional service delivery to schools and research centres, and ensures that the critical interface of research activities are integrated and coordinated. As research is expanded, it is anticipated that a new integrated structure will emerge which facilitates efficient, effective and proactive support to schools and research centres, and ensures delivery of the University research and innovation strategy.

Position Description Director, Research Innovation and Enterprise

The Director, Research and Innovation will lead the development of research commercialisation, research conduct and management policies/procedures and, a research strategy for brokering partnerships with key national and global partners that supports the internationalisation of University research in leveraging funding and staff/student exchanges. The Director, Research and Innovation will further be required to lead and oversee the provision of market intelligence to maximise research inputs and outputs and ensure there are effective programs and initiatives in place to mentor early- and mid-career researchers.

Key responsibilities 1. Develop and deliver a range of strategies to support future University research growth plans with a particular focus on maximising the generation of research income and enhancing the research reputation of Federation University. 2. Provide leadership and direction to managers and supervisors within the Research Services Directorate by building capability and functional service delivery, setting and maintaining expected standards of support and service delivery to schools and research centres and ensuring compliance standards are maintained. 3. Lead and manage the development and implementation of a new integrated structure which facilitates efficient, effective and proactive support to schools and research centres and ensures delivery of the University strategy. 4. Manage the change process and ensure the critical interfaces of activities within the new structure are well integrated and coordinated. 5. Monitor regulatory changes, assess the impact on the University’s conduct and management of research. Establish, modify and maintain appropriate research conduct and management policies and procedures. 6. Lead the review of critical processes and ensure they are sustained to meet statutory, contractual and reporting requirements, and that the University’s academic regulatory framework is fit for purpose and complies with external agency requirements. 7. Lead the development of policies, procedures and processes for the successful disclosure, development and commercialisation of University’s intellectual property. 8. Provide significant contribution to the development and implementation of the University’s research strategy. 9. In collaboration with the Pro Vice-Chancellor, International, lead the development of a specific research strategy for key global partners identifying and brokering partnerships with leading international higher education institutes (HEIs) in order to leverage funding and staff/student exchanges which supports the internationalisation of the University’s research. 10. Lead the development of systems and processes that provide market intelligence to maximise the inputs and outputs of the University’s research. 11. Monitor research performance and advise the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) in the development of strategies to maximise inputs and outputs. 12. Oversee and ensure the successful mentoring of early- and mid-career researchers to publish with impact; use research management systems; write successful grant applications; understand obligations under the Australian Research Council (ARC) code for responsible conduct of research; and understand intellectual property protection and exploitation. 13. Develop proactive relationships with relevant external stakeholders and contribute to the strategic research direction of the University by chairing and participating in high-level committees and workings groups.

Level of responsibility The Director, Research and Innovation reports to and works closely with the Deputy Vice- Chancellor (Research and Innovation) and is a member of the senior management team within Research and Innovation portfolio. The position significantly contributes to the strategic planning of the portfolio and the research strategy of the University, including the internationalisation of the University’s research, by drawing from ‘best practice’ research developments within the higher education sector and ensuring that creative solutions are incorporated into research strategies, policies, procedures and practices of the University. The Director, Research and Innovation is further required to have expertise in the management of human, financial and physical resources as well as expertise in research planning, management and leadership. The position is responsible for leading and managing the Research Services directorate ensuring the performance of duties are carried out effectively, efficiently, responsibly and ethically. The Director, Research and Innovation will also ensure the University complies with national codes and regulations pertaining to research and research training, and for ensuring the timely and accurate compliance with University and government mandated requirements.

Training and qualifications Doctoral qualifications or equivalent professional qualifications and extensive relevant experience in a research management and commercialisation environment.

Position/Organisational relationships The Director, Research and Innovation reports to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation). The position is responsible for developing collaborative relationships with the senior executive team, Deans, Deputy Deans, Associate Deans (Research), researchers, staff and other stakeholders within the University community. The Director, Research and Innovation is further responsible for establishing and maintaining a network of relevant external stakeholders such as government departments, funding agencies and other universities both national and international. The Director, Research and Innovation is responsible for representing the University on national bodies such as the Regional Universities Network (RUN) and Universities Australia (UA), and to actively contribute to RUN and UA by participating in and preparing position papers for working parties, think tanks, planning workshops, etc.

Key selection criteria Applicants must demonstrate they are able to undertake the inherent responsibilities of the position as contained in the position description and are able to meet the following key selection criteria: 1. Doctoral qualifications or equivalent professional qualifications and extensive relevant experience in a research management and commercialisation environment. 2. Demonstrated ability to contribute effectively to the strategic research direction of a large, diverse organisation preferably in a tertiary environment. 3. Demonstrated experience and knowledge of issues around research evaluation, performance measurement and funding including the development and implementation of associated policies and processes. 4. Proven leadership and management skills at an executive level which have been developed at both strategic and operational levels. 5. Demonstrated experience in managing and developing a team of multi-disciplinary professional staff including the management of financial resources. 6. Demonstrated expertise in developing strategies for growth in research income. 7. Demonstrated highly developed interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills. 8. Demonstrated highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills with the proven ability to resolve complex issues. 9. Demonstrated extensive knowledge of and experience in the structure, philosophy and decision-making processes of a tertiary education institution 10. Demonstrated alignment with the University’s commitment to child safety.
