A stroke is one of the most common causes of aphasia. A stroke is when the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the brain tissue is disrupted. Blood flow in the brain can be disturbed in one of two ways. First, a clot or build-up in the blood vessel can cause a blockage. This is referred to as an ischemic or thromboembolic stroke. A second way for brain tissue to be deprived of oxygen in the blood is when a blood vessel bursts. When this happens, it is like the oxygen in the blood taking a “detour”, so it does not get to a certain area of Ischemic the brain. This is called a hemorrhagic stroke.
