Church of St. Patrick 400 Main Street Huntington, 11743 (631)-385-3311 www.stpathuntington.org FROM OUR PASTOR, MSGR. STEVEN R. CAMP

Dear Parishioners,

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I would like to thank all who braved the elements last Sunday and participated in the 85th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, sponsored by the Hibernians of Huntington. If you ever wanted to know what the weather is like in Ireland last Sunday gave us a taste of it. March weather proved, yet again, you never know what you are going to get until it happens. Since St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Sunday in Lent this year, the readings and prayers of the day must be that of the Lenten cycle. But we can still celebrate our Patron Saint in the faith that he brought to Ireland centuries ago.

Today is the 2nd Sunday of Lent and the traditional Gospel is that of the Transfiguration. The early Church placed these readings early in Lent, following the tradition, that the Transfiguration of the Lord took place forty days before Good Friday. St. Luke, in his version of the Transfiguration, emphasizes Hope. Peter, James and John see a glimpse of the glory of the resurrection that awaits them on the other side of the crucifixion. However, the point of the Gospel today is not to hold on to the vision but to listen to the voice of the one who is to be crucified and raised. Peter wants to stay but must move on. We, too many times, want to savor the moment but have to continue on in the journey of life. This vision gave the apostles hope, although they didn’t know or understand the meanings of the events of the Lord’s Passion, until they reflected upon the words and events afterwards. The Transfiguration of the Lord prefigures the glory to which we are called, by our sharing in the Paschal Mystery – the dying and rising of the Lord. Abraham, in the First Reading today from Genesis, gives us the example of faith that is sealed in the covenant, that is given to us by God. This sacred agreement makes us God’s people with His enduring promise to remain faithful to us, even when we are not. It is God’s promise to send us a Savior, who will walk the journey of life with us and through His suffering and death will lead us to life – our Hope.

We have a very full calendar of Lenten activities that help us live out our faith. Stations of the Cross are offered every Friday at 7:30pm in our church. Please see the Daily Lenten Reflections and the Countdown to Easter which are found in the bulletin. Our Lenten Talk Series begins on Monday, March 18th with Fr. Bissex speaking on Almsgiving. The Series continues with speakers Ms. Jackie Mulligan on the 25th and concludes with Fr. Carlos Martins on April 1st. We welcome Fr. Michael Sullivan, OSA to lead us in a Parish Mission, A Time of Grace April 7th – 10th. Please note Exposition will end at 6:30pm for the next four weeks.

God Bless and have a great week.

Msgr. Steven R. Camp
