Dear Friends, John Cunningham, President J.J. Bell, Vice President 2014 was a year in two parts. “During the renovation” was an active and stimulating period but David Porper, Clerk largely invisible to the public. “After the renovation” was an exuberant and celebratory time shared Arthur Ryan, Treasurer with members, friends, our communities and visitors. Our activities closely reflected each situation. Robert Bachelder William James DURING THE RENOVATION Kermit Birchfield Paul Littlefield Herbert Collins William Lynch • The Education Department planned offsite programming which brought the Cape Ann Bonnie Covington Amy Moore Museum into the schools and into new communities. We strengthened our relationships William Cross Stevie Neal with host institutions. Stephanie Gaskins Ronald Nickerson • Members of the Board and staff were intimately involved with the construction project Henrietta Gates Lisa Rich and with the redesign of the galleries; making decisions, big and small. Samuel Holdsworth Hinda Simon • Fresh scholarship and conservation of the collection in preparation for its reinstallation Thomas Hovey Richard Tadler kept the curatorial department and the library/archives staff busy. • Moving the entire collection and staff (for a second time!) required many hands. • Creativity (and good humor) was challenged as we reinstalled every public and private 2014 STAFF space in the Museum. • Special tours of the project introduced new people to the Museum and solidified relationships Administration with those already engaged. Ronda Faloon, Executive Director • The Development Department and Capital Campaign Steering Committee focused on Jeanette Smith, Administrator* securing support for the renovation project and thanking the many generous donors who Cara White, Administrative Assistant made it possible. Curatorial AFTER THE RENOVATION Martha Oaks, Curator • We enjoyed a memorable reopening week and a warm reception from members and friends. Leon Doucette, Curatorial Assistant • More than 400 proud supporters attended the Opening Gala. Erik Ronnberg, Adjunct Maritime Curator • From the New York Times to Chronicle, the renovation and reopening received amazing press. Development • The new permanent installations of the Fresnel lens, the Folly Cove Designers and Strong Gerry Herbert, Director of Development Breezes, Passing Clouds by Diane KW impressed visitors. Amy Fanning, Development Coordinator • The Museum shop received rave reviews. Meredith Anderson, Media and Communications Coordinator • The fall opening reception for Portraits of a Working Waterfront: Photographs by Jim Hooper Education and Programs was a moving event. Courtney Richardson, Director of Education and Public Programs • Recent additions to the collection, including the gift of the painting Phantom of Boston Elizabeth Browning, Education Assistant and additional archival materials from the estate of granite historian Barbara Erkkila have Facilities strengthened the Museum’s holdings. Walter Chianciola, Facilities Manager • The publication of two exhibition catalogs supports and reflects our emphasis on scholarship. Jude Seminara, Security • 12,112 visitors walked through our newly reopened doors from August through December of 2014. Research • Surpassing the $5M mark in the Capital Campaign is a credit to all. Stephanie Buck, Librarian/Archivist • Fostering connections with our communities and an increasingly loyal membership remains Fred Buck, Photo Archivist an ongoing commitment. Linda Johnson, Librarian Assistant Special Projects Heading into our first full year of operation since the renovation, we continue to think about keeping Melissa Geisler Trafton, FHL Online Senior Researcher members engaged, staying relevant to our communities, caring for our collection, remaining finan- Alison Anholt-White, FHL Online Researcher cially stable and fulfilling our goal to be one of the best small museums in the country. The Board is putting the pieces in place to begin the next strategic planning process. Because the Museum was closed for renovations for more than half the year, programming was offered offsite through August. Films, lectures, walking tours and boat excursions were held in collaboration with community organizations throughout the North Shore. Upon reopening, the focus shifted inward. Members and friends were treated to a robust schedule of gallery talks, artist demonstrations, musical performances and evening lectures, all providing insight into the art, history and culture of Cape Ann.

Erich Archer Lisa Smith For over 30 years, Dorothy “Dotty” Addams Brown served Atlantis Motor Inn Brad Story as a trustee of the Cape Ann Museum. During that time, Tom Babson Lauren Suchecki under her stewardship, the organization grew into one Gordon Baird Andrew Spindler Antiques of the most important art and cultural institutions on the Leslie Bartlett T.E. Andresen Moving and Storage North Shore. Jackie and J.J. Bell Thacher Island Association Beauport Transportation Timothy S. Hopkins Catering When Dotty joined the Cape Ann Museum’s governing Cape Ann Savings Bank Ed Touchette board in 1966 the organization was poised for expansion. Cape Ann TV William and Roswitha Trayes Two sites were under consideration: the Duncan’s Point Carroll Steele Insurance Walker Creek Furniture home of artist Fitz Henry Lane (which had been spared Chris and Bonnie Covington Windrush Books from the ravages of Urban Renewal but left without a Lindsay Crouse Women on the Move, LLC plan for its re-use), and the former home of the local Cricket Press Urban Grape branch of the Salvation Army immediately adjacent to Jay DiPrima the Museum’s Pleasant Street Rick Doucette facility. With assurances that the Endicott College Lane House would be taken care Finch & Rose, Preservation & Design of, the Museum moved ahead Bill and Judy Friend with acquisition and development General Antiques of the Salvation Army property. Gladstone Jewelry Within two years, a new four-story Gloucester Civic and Garden Council building was put up, providing Gloucester Systems the Museum with exhibition and W. Herbert Goodick, Inc. collections storage space that was Frank Graham state-of-the-art. It is that building that was recently renovated, financed by a capital John Huss and family campaign, of which Dotty graciously served as honorary chair. Hershey Frame Shop The early years of Dotty’s tenure at the Cape Ann Museum were marked not only by Ann Patrice Hickey expansion of its physical footprint but also by growth of the organization’s base of Ipswich Museum members and friends. From a small “family” museum with an almost totally volunteer Dr. Jan Koch-Weser staff, the trustees and board of managers successfully engaged new audiences who KVAssociates valued what the Museum stood for and were eager to support it. Under Dotty’s wise Look @ It This Way Antiques Jeannine Lynch guidance, this broadened base of support was transformed into fiscal stability which Manchester Historical Museum allowed the Museum to make important strides forward in professionalizing day-to-day Maritime Gloucester operations. Henry and Mary McCarl Dotty’s involvement in the Historical (as she often referred to the Museum) overlapped Jay McLauchlan with that of her close friend Sarah Fraser Robbins who served on the Board of Manag- Mehlin Conservation ers from the early 1960s through 1984. When Sarah stepped off the board to devote Jon Morse, CPA time to other pursuits, Dotty was tempted to follow. In fact, she submitted a letter Judith Monteferrante of resignation only to be lured back in for several more years of service by long-time Montserrat College of Art Museum President and close friend, Harold Bell. Lee Natti Penny Neal Dotty died on March 20, 2014. As part of her estate, Dotty left an unrestricted gift of Sinikka Nogelo $1M to the Museum. Her legacy guarantees that future generations will be inspired by Odyssey Marine Exploration the arts, history and culture of a place she dearly loved. The Museum will be forever Robert Osten grateful for her spirit and her generosity. We are proud in knowing that we accomplished what we set out to do: to be better stewards of our collection; to be more welcoming to visitors; to tell the Cape Ann story in a more comprehensive and compelling way; and to fulfill our vision of becoming one of the finest small museums in the country.
