From Our Pastor’s Desk Mass times &= The Catholic (universal) Church includes a variety of Rites. The Latin Rite, of course, is the largest one with which all of us are familiar. The Antiochene Familiy includes the Maronite Rite, the West Syrian Rite, and the Syro Malankara Rite, the Chaldean (East Syrian) tradition Information= includes both the Chaldean & Syro Malabar Rites, and the Alexandrian Family includes both the Coptic & Ethiopic Rites. Finally, there is the . All of these are in full union with Rome, and their liturgies fulfill one’s Sunday obligation. Many of these are celebrated in English here in the U.S., while their churches in other countries may use different languages. From my limited experience, their liturgies use rich, poetic, inspiring words that truly lift the heart to God. St. John Paul the Great said of these Eastern traditions that the Church must “breathe with both lungs.” He meant that we fulfill our call from God to be truly universal by recognizing these as equal to the Latin Rite and just as much a part of the life of the Catholic Church. Here in our diocese, St. Nichols in Wilmington & St. Basil the Great in Chesapeake City, Md., are Ukrainian Catholic churches, using the . (The Antiochene Church off Savannah Rd. is part of the Orthodox Church, which is not in union with Rome, but which we greatly respect and admire.) Fr. Vlodomir Klanichka is the pastor of St. Nicholas, and we are good friends. Some of my cousins are member of his parish, and our family has sort of adopted him as one of our mem- bers. ( I had the great joy of participating in a double baptism for two children in our family, with an onthespot lesson from Father in their beautiful chants!) Fr. Klanichka is married and the fa- ther of two children. For several years he has celebrated three summer Masses at St. Ed- mund’s. He asked to use St. Jude because parishioners who come with him from Wilmington would like to avoid the congestion and delay in heading North on Sunday evenings from down- town Rehoboth; also, most of the folks who participate in his liturgies are from the Lewes ar- ea. Now that we have an altar where there is room for the priest to stand on the side closest to the congregation, our sanctuary is very adaptable to his Rite. Closed Noon to 1 PM for Masses this summer will be at 4:30 pm on June 24, July 29, and August 26. All are wel- come, and I can assure you that you will find it a very inspiring and uplifting experience. (I hope to get to at least one of them myself! I also hope to visit the Antiochene Church some Sunday, even though we are not able to receive Communion in their liturgy. The Orthodox are actually the closest to us, with who are successors to the Apostles, validly ordained priests, and the sacramental life. Since installaon of Christ our King’s altar here at St. Jude, there’s been a lot of dis- cussion about “the bird” mosaic on the font of the altar. So many of you asked about it (some wondering if it were there because we are a seaside parish) that Kathy Ebner explained in her column the legend about a mother pelican pecking at her flesh to feed her young when no Moving In? Driving slower is good for your blood pressure, your peace of mind, and your wel- fare, as well as the safety of other. At slower speeds you will also enjoy the beauties of nature and other wonderful things in our beach community. The CFC is concerned with total Catholic education in the parish, not only of young people but adults as well. In the words of the CFC’s Mission Statement, “The Christian Formation Committee (CFC) of St. Jude The Apostle Parish guides the faith formation of all children, youth, & adults.” We would like to start by expressing our deep gratitude to all who actively participate in the various faith formation activities of the parish. All ministries in the Church are indebted to the volunteers who support those ministries, & CFC is certainly no differ- ent. A special word of thanks goes to Lynn Marie, the Administrative Coordinator for Religious Education, whose tireless efforts across the spectrum of Christian formation groups can’t be overstated. In the first part of this report, we listed the highlights of the past year. This week, we will talk about some of the activities that are planned for next year. We hope that you’ll participate in these activities in order to grow in knowledge & love of the Lord & of our Catholic faith. We also hope that you’ll prayerfully consider joining CFC or one of its subcommittees to help guide the future of our parish.

Below is a look ahead to some of our plans for the coming year. ADULT FAITH FORMATION The Bible study on the Beatitudes, Kingdom of Happiness, will be concluding this month. Starting this fall, AFF will be presenting a weekly study by Robert Barron, Catholicism: Pivotal Players. While sponsoring these studies, AFF will continue to sup- port their weekly programs. A listing may be found in AFF’s brochure which is printed quarterly. EARLY CHILDHOOD The Little Disciples Summer Enrichment Program will be held during the last week of June. Little Disciples will be on hiatus throughout July & August, but will return in September during the 10:30 AM Mass. This program does a wonderful job of starting Religious Education for children ages 36, while allowing their parents to participate in Mass. All of our programs require volunteers to function, but this is especially true of Little Disciples. The number of children attending has increased over the years & more teachers & helpers are needed. If you love preschool children, please consider volunteering so we can continue offering this needed, valuable program. Call us at (302) 6447413. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Religious Education will again have three sessions in the coming year: Sunday, 11:45 AM1:00 PM; Sunday, 5:30 PM6:45 PM; & Monday, 5:30 PM6:45 PM. Our Opening Day this year will be on September 16 & 17, to coincide with the United States Con- ference of Catholic Bishops’ Catechetical Sunday. We are changing to a new curriculum this year, the Finding God series by Loy- ola Press, which we hope will enable to do an even better job in forming the children of our parish in the Catholic Faith. If you have not yet registered your schoolaged children in Religious Education, please do so as soon as possible by contacting the Religious Education office. SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION Once again, we will be combining with St. Edmond’s & St. Michael’s/Mary, Mother of Peace to celebrate the Sacrament of Con- firmation. Confirmation 2019 is tentatively scheduled to be held at Mary, Mother of Peace in Oak Orchard. The Baptismal Prep Team will continue to hold quarterly Baptismal Preparation workshops. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATON OF ADULTS [RCIA] We will continue to hold twicemonthly sessions throughout the summer for our InquirersNthose who are considering entering into full communion with the Catholic Church. This also enables us to assist new Inquirers immediately, rather than waiting until fall. In September, we will resume weekly sessions of instruction & formation. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a member, please contact the Religious Education office. CHRISTIAN FORMATION COMMITTEE CFC will continue its process of discernment & research to determine how best to help CatholicsNespecially our youthNremain in the Faith while providing oversight & direction to the subcommittees that fall under its umbrella. LIBRARY COMMITTEE The Library Committee will continue to inventory & reconcile the Library’s holdings, as well as consider how best to expand the collection of spiritual & educational books & other media. We will continue to partner with the Adult Faith Formation Committee to sponsor a monthly Book Club, enabling discussion of books that will enhance spiritual growth. Let me express again my appreciation to all who have participated in our Christian Formation activities over the past year. I urge you to prayerfully consider joining one (or more!) of our programs this year. Your skillsNno matter what they areNwill help to enhance the spiritual & intellectual life of our parish. For more information, or to volunteer, please contact the Religious Educa- tion office at (302) 6447413.
