We discussed successive drafts on several occasions, and approved the final version in August. We were impressed with the diversity and quantity of input provided by members of the University community, and appreciated the amount of insight and careful thought that was evident. Their input was very useful indeed, and it had a major impact on the final product. The Strategic Plan 2005-2012 starts with a simple and clear statement of intent – to be a world-class university in New Zealand – and then sets out a range of strategies and quantifiable indicators of performance that we believe will see us achieve that end. It is vital to New Zealand that we do so. A world-class University of Auckland will assist our country to meet its national goals and to contribute to the advancement of the Asia-Pacific region and the wider world. Our engagement with this ideal will help provide all New Zealanders with greater opportunities and a better future. (Strategic Plan, p.1) ‘World-class’ is an appellation that can be too lightly or carelessly used, and there is a risk that our framing of our aspirations that way will be seen as empty rhetoric. We must therefore maintain a close focus on what it means to be a ‘world-class’ university. We must ensure that our actions and our achievements demonstrate that our vision has substance. Our thinking at the moment focuses on five key characteristics of a world-class university. The first is excellence in research. It is through research that leading universities make their greatest contributions to the world, and excellence in research is almost certainly the foremost defining feature of world-class universities. We already have the strongest cohort of researchers in New Zealand, and our international ranking suggests we sit amongst the top handful of universities in Australasia, but to be world-class we must do better. That means attracting the brightest researchers and research students locally and internationally, and continuing to invest heavily in libraries, laboratories and cutting-edge scientific equipment to support their work. The second, and it is inextricably linked with the first, is top quality academic staff who are not only leading researchers but whose brilliant teaching will attract the best students. We must engage our students in a rich and meaningful learning experience. They are making a major commitment in spending several years here, and doing so must be rewarding for them, in every sense. Top quality research and inspiring teaching come together in the third characteristic of a world-class university, which is an atmosphere of intellectual excitement. This is hard to define and measure, but it might be best explained as the spirit that unites a university as a scholarly community.     MAURICE WILKINS CENTRE New Zealand’s Centre of Research Excellence targeting human disease Annual Report 2013 Maurice Wilkins Centre The Maurice Wilkins Centre is New Zealand’s Centre of Research Excellence targeting major human diseases. It focuses on cancer, diabetes and infectious disease. New Zealand has an outstanding reputation for biomedical research. The Centre aims to harness this expertise to develop drugs and vaccines, tools for early diagnosis and prevention, and new models of disease. In addition to translational research that directly targets human disease, the Maurice Wilkins Centre encourages innovative fundamental science that has the potential for high impact on human health. The Maurice Wilkins Centre is a multidisciplinary network that brings together leading biologists, chemists and computer scientists. At the end of 2013 it comprised 148 investigators throughout the country, and over 170 early-career affiliates, linking researchers from six universities, three Crown Research Institutes and two private research institutes. These investigators represent most of New Zealand’s expertise in discovering new drugs, vaccines and diagnostic tools that proceed to clinical trials. As the national hub for molecular biodiscovery the Centre provides a point of contact for a broad range of national scientific expertise. It cultivates collaborations with international researchers and research institutions and also engages with industry and the medical profession. This also relates the (111) fcc gold layer to the graphene surface, the gold nanowires to the carbon nanotubes, and the Mackay icosahedra well known in cluster growth simulations to the halma transforms of the fullerene C20. Objectives of Research Centre: Our objective is to advance and disseminate knowledge in the area of theoretical/computational chemistry and physics, and to maintain high international standards in this research field only matched by top research institutes world-wide. All objectives are clearly met, as we are one of the most productive and internationally acclaimed research centres here in New Zealand, with truly outstanding performances by each of our staff members. Our research centre has not been without a Marsden grant running since it was established (a new grant was awarded in 2016 to Joachim Brand), four staff are actively involved in the Dodd-Walls CoRE, four others were successful in a funding bid to the Norwegian Centre for Advanced Study (CAS) to perform research in the field of Chemistry at Extreme Conditions.

Professor of Microbiology, John Curtin School of Medical Research, 1949 to 1967: Administrative and Domestic Arrangements Europe, July 1949 to February 1950 As described in the previous chapter, Sir Howard Florey had made arrangements for the first three professors appointed to the John Curtin School of Medical Research to meet him in Oxford early in August 1949. Adrien Albert (Medical Chemistry) was working in the Wellcome Laboratories in London and Hugh Ennor (Biochemistry) had come over from Melbourne. Bobbie and I arrived in England on 2 August. She stayed with my friend Cecil Hackett and his wife Beattie at Northwood, just out of London. I went up to Oxford and spent a very busy four days talking about the future of the School with my new colleagues (it was the first time that we had met) and with Florey. With the help of Florey©s colleague, Gordon Sanders (who later came out to Canberra for a few months to help us with the planning), among other things we decided on an H-shape for the JCSMR building, with the main laboratories on the south side of each wing, to avoid direct sunlight, and rooms for special facilities on the north side, with narrow passages, to make cluttering with equipment difficult. The spine of the H was reserved for School requirements, with the library on the top floor, a lecture theatre and seminar rooms, administrator©s offices and a tea-room on the ground floor, and stores on the bottom floor. Since there were no laboratories in Canberra at the time, the ANU had arranged with Burnet to make available two laboratories at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute until we were able to move into laboratories in Canberra.

The Centre aims to harness this expertise to develop drugs and vaccines, tools for early diagnosis and prevention, and new models of disease. In addition to translational research that directly targets human disease, the Maurice Wilkins Centre encourages innovative fundamental science that has the potential for high impact on human health. The Maurice Wilkins Centre is a multidisciplinary network that brings together leading biologists, chemists and computer scientists. By the end of 2012 it comprised 119 investigators throughout the country, and over 131 early-career affiliates, linking researchers from six Universities, three Crown Research Institutes and two private research institutes. These investigators represent most of New Zealand’s expertise in discovering new drugs, vaccines and diagnostic tools that proceed to clinical trials. As the national hub for molecular biodiscovery the Centre provides a point of contact for a broad range of local scientific expertise. It cultivates collaborations with international researchers and research institutions and also engages with industry and the medical profession. It is committed to building the economy, and building scale in the New Zealand biomedical sector.
