Our Five Core Values

Collaboration The ability to facilitate, negotiate, build consensus, build strong teams, and empower others.

Continuous Learning The ability to question assumptions and beliefs, understand strengths and shortcomings, and commit to continued growth within a community context.

Diversity & Inclusion The ability to work effectively and inclusively with different people and understand how to adapt to different cultures and environments.

Focus on Assets The ability to catalyze the natural leadership of everyone, be truly accountable to those served, and approach opportunities for change with awareness of community assets.

Integrity The ability to meet commitments, act responsibly with public and personal trust, and be accountable for words and actions.

Our Vision A more just and equitable society for all.

Our Mission Public Allies advances new leadership to strengthen communities, nonprofits and civic participation.

Public Allies is an AmeriCorps program with the University of Delaware Center for Community Research and Service. Founder’s Message

A message from the Public Allies Delaware Founder and Founding Director: Suzanne Sysko, M.D. & Tony Allen, Ph.D.

So there we are in the 1994, sitting in a one-room office in downtown Wilmington, getting to know each other. We are both Delaware public school kids who grew up maybe five miles apart and recently graduated from James Madison University and University of Delaware respectively. One of us is 24; the other is 23. We are meeting for the first time and talking about the difference we want to make in the world.

One of us was taking a year to prepare for Medical School. The other was a bit more pedestrian, deciding whether to become a lawyer or a writer. If you knew his grades at Delaware, neither could have been possible at that time. As they continue talking, they both rail against the popular notion that twenty-somethings of that time only wanted the material things in life, putting themselves first and community a distant last.

We believed that people — particularly young people — come alive when they are helping others. Doing for others satisfies something deep within us and if nurtured and cultivated, could be a primary part of who we are. With that spirit, and a little adult supervision from most notably Sonia Sloan and David Sysko, Public Allies Delaware was born.

We were a part of burgeoning national movement funded by a new program from the Clinton Administration called the Corporation for National Service, popularly known as AmeriCorps. While President Clinton called this effort the Domestic Peace Corps, the seeds of AmeriCorps emerged from President Bush’s 1,000 Points of Light. Bi-partisan at their core, AmeriCorps and Points of Light were based on an identical concept —re-imagine the ethic of faithful, committed public servants that continues to make our country great. Public Allies is just one demonstration of that proud legacy, critical in its impact on the national service movement in Delaware and beyond.

When Public Allies started in Delaware 20 years ago, it was one of just five locations in the nation. In every case, the objective was to find a diverse group of local young people, who wanted to learn about themselves while doing good for others. The design was simple: participate in a 10-month apprenticeship in a local nonprofit where the Allies work four days a week and then come together every Friday to build their personal and professional development skills. In addition, Allies work on a group project that lasts far beyond their term of service. They identify a problem facing the local community and co-create a project. Allies generate actual solutions to local neighborhood challenges. After the Allies complete the program, provide them with an educational award to use to either pay back student loans or pursue another or —in many cases — their first degree. Here’s what’s happened next... The Three Public Allies Program Components #1 Apprenticeship

We offer full time 10 months paid apprenticeships in nonprofit and public agencies where Allies create, improve and expand services with measurable results. Allies are provided the opportunity to gain “real world” experiences in a supportive learning environment while building organizational capacity.

#2 Leadership Training

Allies receive rigorous leadership training from community leaders, professional consultants, and nonprofit and corporate executives helping Allies to develop a wide range of skills, knowledge and abilities. Allies gain skills in communication, critical thinking, nonprofit management, appreciation of diversity, conflict resolution, personal accountability, and recognition of community assets.

#3 Team Service Project (TSP)

TSP provides Allies an opportunity to mobilize assets in a community and work productively with people from all walks of life. Allies learn how to identify community issues and build collaborative partnerships. A team works to implement a community’s idea for improvement, help facilitate the start-up or expansion of a community-driven, community-led project or program.

The Meaning of the Public Allies Logo

The Public Allies logo draws on Native American tradition to make a point about the impact that individuals can have on their world. The handprint represents the mark that people leave on their communities and on the people they touch in the course of their lives. The red swirl stands for the energy and idealism that drive people to serve their communities. The seven rays refer to a philosophy regarding the interconnectedness of the generations – the belief that an individual living today has been influenced by the three preceding generations and that the individual will go on to leave a legacy impacting the three generations to follow. Public Allies Delaware Vision for Local Impact

Public Allies Delaware builds stronger neighborhoods (“Impact Neighborhoods”) through extended partnerships with community-led planning groups to develop community leadership and increase civic participation. We support Impact Neighborhoods in accomplishing established goals and strategies by leveraging the Public Allies program components and network of resources.

Everyone fits into the attainment of this vision!

Current Allies Emerging local leaders apprentice with local nonprofits focusing their work on building the capacity of the organization, participate in a highly intensive nonprofit leadership training program and engage in a hands on community development project located in an Impact Neighborhood.

Partner Organizations Government and nonprofit organizations hosting allies are increasing efficiency, effectiveness and widen the scope of their services in, but not limited to, Impact Neighborhoods. Nonprofit capacity is being built.

Public Allies Delaware Alumni Council An organized group of Public Allies Delaware Alumni bring leadership experience, resources and conduct service projects focused in Impact Neighborhoods. Alumni have the opportunity to further development through national and local pilot projects. In Delaware, alumni will soon have the opportunity to expand the reach of Public Allies’ mission and its values through train the trainer experiences. This will allow alumni to deploy to civic and for-profit groups providing community leadership and civic engagement education to other “new leaders”.

Public Allies Staff Public Allies staff members coordinate ally training and learning sessions; provide coaching and support to allies, alumni and partner organizations; and connect key stakeholders by coordinating the team service project experience in Impact Neighborhoods.

Foundation and Corporate Funders Public Allies Delaware partners with local funders, neighborhood groups and nonprofits to explore collaborative funding opportunities, and leverage funding by reducing duplication of services.

Team Service Projects Teams of Allies are partnering with Impact Neighborhood groups on focused community projects, to provide hands on community development experiences.

Board & Founders Council There are board seats reserved for representatives from each of the Impact Neighborhoods, allowing board actions to be asset driven. Board appointments will further increase civic engagement and leadership development of the members.

University of Delaware Center for Community Research and Service Public Allies is an AmeriCorps program of the University of Delaware Center for Community Research and Service. CCRS Staff support the community development efforts of Public Allies Delaware. Currently, the Center is exploring how participation in the Public Allies Delaware program can become a credit bearing experience.

Training and Learning Facilitators Facilitators provide leadership and community development training to Allies throughout their term of service to prepare them for the application piece of their experience.
