About Kansas City: The ‘Roos joined the newly-realigned WAC this season after previously competing as a mem- ber of the Summit League. So far in conference play UMKC has shown their ability to compete at home and on the road with a 3-3 mark including wins over New Mexico State at home and Idaho and Seattle on the road.

The ‘Roos are coming off a 66-48 loss at first-place Utah Valley Thursday night. Utah Valley proved why it was the top defensive team in the WAC on Thursday night, holding Kansas City to a season-low in scoring.

The contest was a tight one for the first 27 minutes, but that’s when UMKC (6-12, 3-3 WAC) went cold. After a three by Caleb Johnson with 13:10 on the clock cut the Utah Valley (11-7, 5-0 WAC) lead to 44-43, Kansas City didn’t hit another field goal until the 1:44 mark. The Wolverines pushed their lead to as many as 21 during the stretch.

The ‘Roos shot just 28 percent in the game, and 23 percent in the final half, while UVU hit 46 percent in the final period. The Wolverines also did damage on the glass, out-rebounding UMKC by a 50-35 margin, including 15 on the offensive end.

Kansas City enters Saturday’s contest being led by freshman guard Martez Harrison and his 16.1 ppg this season. The Kansas City native is shooting 42% from the field and 35% from three-point range while leading the ‘Roos with 67 assists. He’s also averaging over 17 ppg in WAC play and is coming off a team-high 15 at Utah Valley on Thurs- day night.

He’s joined by senior guard Nelson Kirksey and his 13.8 ppg this season, Kirksey is shooting 45% from the field while also pulling down a team third-best 5.2 rebounds per contest as well. Kirksey scored just six points at Utah Valley while grabbing seven rebounds.

Senior forward Trinity Hall rounds out the double-digit scorers with 11 per game while Frank Williams has contributed more lately averaging over 10 ppg in WAC play.

The ‘Roos enter shooting 42% from the field and a conference-second-worst 27% from three-point range. Kansas City also ranks near the bottom of team defense allowing 77.8 ppg this season and 72.7 ppg in WAC games.

Series History: This will be the first meeting between Bakersfield and Kansas City in men’s basketball.

About The ‘Runners: It’s been a slow start for the Roadrunners in conference play and an 0-3 start at home in WAC games after Thursday night’s setback against Chicago State. The Roadrunners have struggled to make plays during critical stretches of the second half which have led them to lose four conference games by an average margin of just 5.5 points.

Thursday night the story was similar, after tying the game in the second half, the ‘Runners allowed a 12-2 run over a 3:30 minute stretch to Chicago State before pulling back within a point on two occasions. At that point Chicago St. went on a quick 5-0 run with less than three minutes to play to stretch their lead for good. They also hit a pair of field goals and were 11-of-12 from the free-throw line during that critical stretch. Bakersfield was unable to get a defensive stop to close the gap.

Issiah Grayson led the way again with his 28 points, it’s the sixth time this season the senior guard has scored at least 20 points in a game and the fifth-straight game he’s led Bakersfield in scoring. Stefon Johnson chipped in 12 points for Bakersfield on 5-7 from the field. Johnson is now averaging over 10.5 ppg in WAC play while Grayson moved his season-average up to 15.4 ppg and his conference average to 19.4 ppg through five games.

Several key shooters for the Roadrunners were also very quiet on Thursday night with second-leading scorer Bran- don Barnes and third-leading scorer Javonte Maynor a combined 0-11 from the field and 0-8 from three-point range. It marks the first time in WAC play that Barnes was held scoreless while it was the second time in three games that Maynor went without a point. Abdul Ahmed who scored in double figures in three of CSUB’s first four games, is shoot- ing a combined 2-18 from the field (11%) and 1-7 (14%) from three-point range over the last five games..

Prior to Thursday’s game Barnes had returned to his late-season scoring form for CSUB averaging 10.8 ppg in con- ference play and shooting 50% from the field over the previous four games after a rough start.

As a team the Roadrunners have taken a step backwards in conference play when it comes to shooting, especially from three-point range where CSUB is managing just 32% over the last five games. Once a 45% or better team from the field, Bakersfield is shooting below 42% in conference play.

Defensively Speaking: Despite the 1-4 start to conference play and a few rough stretches during the second-half, the Roadrunners defense continues to be one of the best in the WAC. The ‘Runners trail only first-place Utah Valley in team defense with CSUB’s 67.6 ppg allowed this season and 68 ppg allowed in WAC play. UVU leads the conference with just 58 ppg allowed in WAC games.

CSUB is allowing a 5th best 43% from the field this season and a conference-low 39% from three-point range overall. Those numbers however have changed drastically in WAC play where Bakersfield is allowing a near WAC-worst 45% from the field, and 35% from three-point range with is 6th in the conference. Only Kansas City has allowed higher numbers from the field at 45.5%. The ‘Roos however are one of the best defending the three-point line in conference play allowing just over 27%.

Grayson Leading The Way: The Roadrunners prided themselves earlier in the season on being a balanced- offensive team with several players capable of putting up big numbers on any given night. Recently however it’s been Issiah Grayson doing the majority of the scoring as he’s accounted for over 30% of the ‘Runners scoring in the first five conference games. He’s now averaging 19.4 ppg in conference while shooting 57% from the field and 44% from three-point range.

Outside Shooting In Top-25 The Roadrunners three-point shooting ranks 24th in the NCAA with their 39.8% shooting from beyond-the-arc. Creighton leads the nation with 43.6% from downtown. The Roadrunners also rank 53rd with their 7.8 three-pointers-made per game average. Their 148 made three-pointers this season rank 50th in the NCAA as well.

Aly Ahmed Becomes Eligible: Following three appeals regarding eligibility to the NCAA and 8 missed games, Aly Ahmed was granted the go-ahead to play as a sophomore for the Roadrunners. The ruling was not only favorable for Bakersfield this season but also in the seasons to come as Ahmed was granted eligibility as a sophomore, mean- ing he’ll have three seasons remaining in Bakersfield.

Ahmed made his debut for the Roadrunners against Santa Clara (12/5) scoring 6 points on 3-of-7 shooting while pull- ing down 3 rebounds and blocking 4 shots. He added a career-high 14 points and five rebounds at UTSA (12/18) and matched that with a 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting against Utah Valley (1/4). He led the team in rebounding at Seattle (1/16) with 9 for Bakersfield.

Out Like A Lamb: When healthy, senior guard Zach Lamb is one of the most dangerous scoring threats for Bakers- field, unfortunately this season Lamb has only appeared in 15 of CSUB’s 18 games and just three times in conference play for a total of 26 minutes due to nagging ankle injuries.

Lamb successfully returned against Chicago St. scoring eight points on 3-6 shooting while dishing out three assists and recording two steals in 19 minutes of action..

At the Icardo Center: Following the loss to Chicago State on Thursday night, the Roadrunners are now 183-23 all-time at the Icardo Center and 3-1 this season on the blue court. The Icardo Center was the full-time home of the Roadrunners from 1988-1998 before they moved to Rabobank Arena. The ‘Runners returned to playing most of their home games at the Icardo Center in 2011 and will split their 14 home games this season evenly between the two are- nas.

Prior to Thursday’s game, Bakersfield had not played at the Icardo Center since Nov. 23, a two-month stretch between home games on campus.

Along with the impressive all-time mark, the Roadrunners are 18-5 on the blue court since Rod Barnes took over the program in 2011.

The Captains: For the second straight season Javonte Maynor is one of three team captains for the Roadrunners. Maynor is playing his second season in Bakersfield but his third under head coach Rod Barnes who he played for at Georgia State as a freshman. Maynor is the team’s best returning three-point shooter making over 38% last season. BAKERSFIELD BASKETBALL NOTES • PAGE 5 He also spent a portion of the season as a point guard last year, something that is unlikely this season thanks to the return of fellow captain and point guard Issiah Grayson.

Grayson underwent knee surgery prior to last season and sat out as he recovered. He was an instrumental part of the 2011-12 team’s 16-15 finish and appearance in the CIT. Grayson set a new CSUB Division I record with 204 assists that season which was also good for a 25th-best ranking in the NCAA. Grayson also managed to lead the team in steals (65) and was third on the squad in scoring (10.2) per game.

Brandon Barnes rounds out this season’s captains and is the team’s highest returning scorer from last season where he managed 12.1 ppg appearing in all 30 games with 23 starts. Barnes was also the team’s leading rebounder with 5.2 per contest despite spending much of the season as an undersized power forward at just 6’ 1”. Barnes still man- aged a quality season shooting over 43% from the field and 33% from three-point range. He scored in double figures 21 of 30 games he played in.

‘Runners selected Third in WAC Preseason Polls: Both the coaches and media in the Western Athletic Conference selected the Roadrunners to finish 3rd in the polls released at WAC Basketball Preview in Las Vegas in October. Other publications like The Sporting News and Sports Illustrated have selected Bakersfield second. In all cases defending tournament champion New Mexico State was selected first.

Preseason Honors for Barnes: Brandon Barnes was selected preseason All-WAC by the coaches as announced at WAC Basketball Preview in Las Vegas in October.

WAC Basketball Tournament: The Roadrunners will compete in their first Western Athletic Conference Tourna- ment beginning Thursday, March 13 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. All-session passes for the tourna- ment are available by calling the Roadrunner Ticket office at (661) 654-BLUE. Both men’s and women’s teams will take part in the tournament with the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament going to the winner.

Adios Independence: With the start of the 2013-14 season, the Roadrunners first as a member of the Western Athletic Conference, Bakersfield closed a chapter on their Division I history. CSUB played 176 games as an Indepen- dent, a stretch that started during the 2007-08 season, the first at the NCAA Division I level. Along with the non- conference games, the ‘Runners posted a 62-114 record and have one postseason appearance, making the 2011-12 CollegeInsider.com postseason tournament.

The program has also experienced extensive travel and faced a variety of opponents during their time as an Indepen- dent. Here’s the breakdown:

Wins Under Barnes: With their 14th win of the season on Mar. 6, 2013 head coach Rod Barnes once again led CSUB to double-digit wins in a single season at the NCAA Division I level for the second year in a row. Prior to his arrival, the ‘Runners had only won nine games in a single season since making the Division I transition, that occurred in the 2010-11 season when CSUB was 9-19. Coupled with his 14 wins last season, Barnes has led CSUB to 38 wins as head coach.
