The Miami Foundation Community Recovery Overview | Page 2 Community Recovery Fund

The Miami Foundation created the Community Recovery Fund in partnership with donor champions and nonprofit partners. We used the unrestricted resources raised through the fund as leverages to support and prioritize four major focus areas of investment. FINANCIAL STABILITY & HEALTH & WELLNESS ECONOMIC RESTORATION Restore health and wellness by investing in Put Miami-Dade residents on firm financial organizations that address residents’ physical, footing by investing in organizations that have mental and behavioral health needs, as well as an outsized impact on the financial security of

basic food security and access, with an Greater Miami residents, helping increase emphasis on communities of color across employment, housing security, benefits access, Greater Miami and support for small business owners. CHILDREN & YOUTH THRIVING SOCIETY Invest in the success of our youth by supporting Create vibrant, inclusive social and organizations that provide quality childcare to civic bonds through shared arts and families, support community and distance cultural experiences, access to credible news

learning programs to supplement virtual school and information, and digital connectivity for all. classes, and create constructive engagement opportunities for every child.

Within each of the focus areas, The Miami Foundation identified a number of investment opportunities to address the profound local need. We use our unique position to collaborate with businesses and our philanthropic partners, and amplify our investments.

Our recovery work is far from over. Nonprofits are reporting on the deep impact that these investments made and the immense unmet need, both in terms of funding for nonprofit operating costs but also for community health and wellness.

• Food insecurity is still above pre-pandemic levels – more than 14% of adults are food insecure, compared to less than 10% pre-pandemic, translating into tens of thousands of families who don't know if they will have enough food to eat each day. • 91% of local nonprofits surveyed reported ongoing financial needs to maintain operations, programs, and services in 2021. • Arts and cultural organizations are still unable to generate revenue through tickets/admissions and from in-person events. • Many funding streams have dried up as we wait for American Rescue Plan Act funds to become widely available.

We are exploring how The Miami Foundation and our partners can continue to make strategic investments to address the pervasive needs that plague our community. Some of the areas we are focusing on include a shifting economy that will require job reskilling, a population finding themselves unable to pay rent without stable employment, a growing mental health crisis, and health and digital inequity.

The Miami Foundation Community Recovery Overview | Page 3 Miami Connected

Internet connectivity has become a basic need for students and families. Census data indicated that nearly 100,000 students faced challenges pursuing studies from home. Together with Achieve Miami, the Foundation launched a public-private partnership, Miami Connected, to provide digital connectivity, digital literacy, and workforce opportunities to 60,000 households in the community. This large public- private partnership continues to grow with support from a wide array of philanthropic partners. PPE Supplies for Nonprofits

In partnership with Health Foundation of South Florida, the Florida Blue Foundation, The Frederick A. De Luca Foundation, Elevate Innovation, and XPI Relief Fund, The Miami Foundation coordinated central purchasing and free distribution of more than $250,000 worth of personal protective equipment for small, direct service nonprofit organizations serving vulnerable communities. Each of the below organizations received free PPE supplies to resume and sustain operations.

Ending Homelessness Due to the growing number of seniors becoming displaced and homeless during the pandemic, the Miami- Dade Homeless Trust launched the Ending Homelessness Now Fund. The Foundation provided a challenge grant of $50,000 to seed the effort to secure a building to respond to the housing emergency.

The Miami Foundation Community Recovery Overview | Page 4 Food Access PepsiCo, Inc. and its philanthropic arm, The PepsiCo Foundation, partnered with The Miami Foundation to support local organizations working to provide food access and emergency assistance to communities of color. An investment of $500,000 supported six grantees working on the ground to feed and sustain our residents. The grantees included: Bridge to Hope, Feeding South Florida, FoodRescue Miami, Health in the Hood, MUJER, and Redlands Christian Migrant Association. This funding provided 150,000 residents with almost 350,000 meals. This support also enabled grantees to explore new food service models including walk-up community kitchens, door-to-door volunteer food drop-offs, and self-registration systems to eliminate hours of car wait lines. Living Wage Opportunities

In partnership with JPMorgan Chase, The Miami Foundation invested $160,000 in a collaboration between Prospera and Florida International University Small Business Development Center (FIU SBDC) to provide support to small businesses focusing on accessing capital, reviewing business strategy, and adjusting to the “new normal.” The goal of this work is to help 500 small businesses create living wage jobs for the community resulting in an economic impact of more than $5 million. This structured partnership has provided tailored business disaster assistance for impacted businesses, which included establishing a referral system to ensure that prospective clients had access to both technical assistance expertise. To date, the partnership has resulted in 46 referrals, 367 businesses served, and 956 quality jobs created and/or retained. Supporting Miami-Dade Public School Principals

Our systems stepped up in a major way during the crisis to ensure our kids received school, food, and other kinds of critical support. The Principals and teachers at Miami-Dade Public Schools were on the front lines but working under the radar to keep our community together. As a show of gratitude for their leadership during this difficult time for our community, The Miami Foundation, with support from Peacock Foundation, The Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation and an anonymous donor, presented each Miami-Dade Public School Principal with a $500 to be used at their discretion. They shared with us that these funds would be used to support the little things that are not part of a school’s budget, like a new backpack for a homeless student or a free dinner for teachers working overtime.

Rental Assistance

As housing vulnerability continues to threaten many residents in Greater Miami, we have invested in organizations like Miami Homes for All and Axis Helps South Florida who are supporting residents to take advantage of the variety of rental assistance programs being made available through local city and county government. These investments enable our community to take advantage of critical pots of funds that would otherwise be lost to the community.

The Miami Foundation Community Recovery Overview | Page 5 Capacity Building Mini-Grants In partnership with Allegany Franciscan Ministries and The Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation, The Miami Foundation awarded $160,000 in capacity building mini grants of up to $15,000 to hyper-local nonprofits embedded in high-need, low-income neighborhoods. These organizations provide for basic needs and serve as trusted resources and disseminators for health and wellness equity. These grants supported organizations specifically working to improve health and wellness outcomes as well as children and youth serving organizations.

The below organizations each received unrestricted investments that allowed them to provide critical resources for children and families - from free health care to reliable child-care.

Learning Kits for Kids

In partnership with The Education Fund, The Miami Foundation invested $200,000 in scaling the supply and distribution of learning activity kits for underserved children through nonprofit partnerships over the summer, bulk shipments to schools in the fall and supply distribution during the 2020-21 school year, to support children who are most vulnerable to the effects of the academic learning slide.

Bridging the Digital Divide

The Miami Foundation makes investments to ensure that our rural and low-income communities have access to technology and broadband internet. We awarded $150,000 in mini grants of $10,000 each to nonprofits, thus investing in digital technology for their critical operations and/or the individuals they support.

Five organizations serving communities of color were selected to receive $12,000 grants and free expert technical support, guidance and advice to understand how they can enhance their use of technology. The organizations include: Catalyst Miami, PowerU Center for Social Change, Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center, Urgent Inc., and YWCA South Florida.

Sustaining the Arts

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation, and the Funding Arts Network all partnered with The Miami Foundation to ensure that our local arts organizations and artists were not forgotten in the community recovery efforts. These groups were among the hardest hit by the pandemic as theaters and other cultural venues shut their doors and opportunities for earned revenue evaporated. With the help of these generous donors, more than $400,000 was awarded to support more than 35 organizations and dozens of local artists. Some of the organizations supported include:

Miami-Dade Nonprofit Support Grant Program

The Miami Foundation partnered with the Miami-Dade County Department of Public Housing and Community Development (PHCD) to create the $10 million Miami-Dade Nonprofit Support Grant Program, funded thanks to federal CARES Act dollars. The program was designed to support small nonprofits, with 25 or fewer employees, in their financial recovery throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The need from the community was immense: we received 608 applications requesting $13.4 million in relief funding. As the demand far exceeded the available funds, staff and community leaders alike worked to advocate for an expansion of the program and ultimately, we were successful. The Miami- Dade Nonprofit Support Grant program received additional funding resulting in 423 individual grants awarded, totaling $11.3 million.

The grantees represented a wide array of the nonprofit organizations in Miami — serving diverse populations, from across 9 different sectors, all 34 municipalities of Miami-Dade County, and all 13 County Commission districts. The program was a critical lifeline for local nonprofits and helped them weather the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Every single Miami that submitted a complete and valid application within the application period was approved for grant funding. Learn more about the program and its impact on our community on The Miami Foundation’s website: https://miamifoundation.org/covid19reliefgrants.
