Dear Parishioners of St. Vincent Ferrer: I am pleased to present you with this 2021 Parish Guide Book and Directory. It is a gift to you from the generous businesses in our community whose advertisements made this book available to you at no cost to our parish. Please patronize them and thank them for their generosity. I hope you will find this Guide Book and Directory useful, and that you will keep it handy. It lists all the liturgies, ministries, activities and services we provide at SVF, all of our staff and key Commissions, along with our phone numbers and email addresses. At the back is a complete listing of every registered parish family. It’s like having our own St. Vincent Ferrer Parish phone book. We have a few extra copies of this book in the parish office. If you would like to send one to a family member or friend, just let us know. Looking through all the activities available at our parish, it is my hope that you will participate in the life of our faith community by joining a ministry, group, Commission or activity. You enrich both your faith life and the faith life of your fellow SVF parishioners when you give the gift of your time and talent to support our parish mission. Let us pray for one another as we work together to build up the Kingdom of God here in our St. Vincent Ferrer family.

Youth Ministry This ministry offers spiritual, social and service events focused on inviting students in grades 7-12 to live a more active faith-life. The junior high (grades 7 & 8) and high school (9-12) groups meet both separately and together on Sundays 6:30-8:30 pm. A group of 9-12 students meets for additional catechesis on Monday evening. All meet at All Saints Parish. History of St. Vincent Ferrer Parish In the year 1946 the area around the intersection of Montgomery and Kenwood Roads was little more than a field. America was returning to normal after the end of the Second World War, new homes were being constructed and the population was growing in the Kenwood area. Churches in the surrounding neighborhoods of Deer Park and Rossmoyne were filled to capacity at every Mass. A new parish was needed. The first Mass for this new parish was held at the Concord School gymnasium on Montgomery Road (now Yavneh Day School) on March 17, 1946, and St. Vincent Ferrer Parish was born. As you would expect in a new parish, men’s and women’s lay organizations were quickly formed, with meetings held in parishioners’ homes or neighborhood restaurants. The parish was in need of its own facilities, so the Archdiocese purchased about twelve acres of land near the Montgomery/Kenwood Road intersection. In July 1946, construction of the first building began: “A prefabricated hangar consisting of fireproof trusses and galvanized steel roofing and siding.” Father Norbert Miller was appointed administrator and organizer of our new parish, which served approximately 175 families. The hangar building eventually would contain a church, a rectory for two resident priests, a parish office, a convent for six , several classrooms and a cafeteria/auditorium with stage and kitchen. The building opened in 1947, and the classrooms were used first, thanks to some last minute construction and assistance from the men of the parish. The Dominican Sisters of Adrian, Michigan supplied the teachers, three of them, with Sister Catherine Dennis as the first principal. The second floor convent was occupied for the first time on Christmas Eve in 1948, and Midnight Mass was celebrated that night in the new Church on the main floor. As the parish grew, so did its liturgical needs. By 1956, ten years after our first Mass, St. Vincent Ferrer Parish had grown to 450 families. School enrollment was 339, and Father Charles J. Blum was named pastor. He immediately began developing a master plan for new parish facilities. The first fruits of this effort were realized on November 9, 1958, when ground was broken for a new school building. Less than a year later, on October 25, 1959, Auxiliary Bishop Paul Leibold dedicated the school facility which serves the children of our parish to this day.

6 St. Vincent Ferrer Parish Guide Book & Directory

As the parish evolved through the 1960s, Father Blum focused parishioners on a drive to fund the construction of a new church. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on February 2, 1969. On January 18, 1970 the church was dedicated by Bishop Leibold, who was then the Archbishop of Cincinnati. By 1971 the Montgomery/Kenwood area was thriving, and so was St. Vincent Ferrer Parish – with its new church, highly functional school building and attractive grounds. During the 1970s SVF created its first Parish Council, and lay teachers slowly replaced the nuns in the school classrooms and principal’s office. By the end of the decade a stand-alone rectory had been constructed and the original hangar building had been gutted and completely renovated. The new Community Center featured permanent parish offices, a gym, chapel, meeting rooms and a cafeteria. Archbishop Bernadin dedicated the remodeled facility in 1982. Father Terry Hamilton was named pastor in 1993 and helped direct the parish through a series of 50th anniversary observances in 1996. Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk celebrated the 50th Anniversary Mass on March 16, 1996, and several hundred parishioners gathered for the Mass and anniversary dinner. On July 7, 2006 Father George C. Kunkel became the seventh pastor to serve at St. Vincent Ferrer, remaining until March 2016. In April 2016, Fr. Dennis Jaspers was named pastor of both St. Vincent and All Saints Parishes. Fr. Jerome Bishop served from July 2016 until June 2019 as Parochial Vicar, assisting Fr. Jaspers with parish duties. Fr. Jedidiah Tritle served as Parochial Vicar from July 2019 until June 2020. Fr. Tom Wray is the current Parochial Vicar, having been appointed in July 2020 for the region. As a pastoral region with All Saints parish at 8939 Montgomery Road, we share in several ministerial efforts; collaborating for the administrative and spiritual benefits of both parishes. Today, St. Vincent Ferrer is a community of more than six hundred families – a parish with men’s, women’s and youth organizations, beautiful liturgies, an elementary school and religious education program, an active sports program, varied ministries, and successful fund-raising efforts like our annual Festival. We are a faith community, a people of prayer and service – a complete parish, and at the same time, a family.
