These developments take into account the Quality Indicators set out by Education in “How Good Is Our School?”; the priorities of Islands Council and the aims of the school itself. The evidence contained in this report is based on the progress made by our school during session 2014-2015.

Development Priorities The main development priorities for the year were:

to consider the deployment of teaching We welcomed Ms Smith as our probationary staff in the light of having a probationer teacher and Mrs Colclough as our new part- teacher time teacher. We organised the timetable to allow for NQT support time and non contact time. Ms Breyley worked for UHI for a notional day a week. Our additional staffing meant we were able to manage the sudden redeployment of Mlle Boulay and, later in the year, the absence of Mrs Martin due to ill health. Ms Smith brought new skills and enthusiasm to the school. to review our use of ICT in the STEM The children had asked to do a Games project context and to develop computational so we used this opportunity to develop work on thinking coding using Scratch with P3+ and to introduce simple coding with P1+ using non IT based activities and on newly developed ipad apps. All children also designed and made their own board games and were encouraged to use the approaches and concepts needed to be computational thinkers. Children shared these games at an event in Burravoe Hall. to review pupil engagement with reading We had identified that some pupils did not make best use of the reading time given to them so Ms Smith undertook an action research project as part on her NQT year and worked with older pupils to identify what factors would improve the reading experience for them and encourage them to read more widely. Her findings led to changes at the end of the year and will feed into the coming year’s developments. Pupils have choices about where they read and we have introduced access to ebooks from the library, newspapers and comics. to work with the BBC 10 Pieces project to The children really enjoyed this topic and found introduce children to different aspects of really interesting and exciting ways to respond classical music and to give pupils different to the different pieces of music. They often ways to share their response to this worked collaboratively and an extract from their film made in response to Zadok the Priest was shown as an example of the use of film at The Scottish Film and Learning Festival. to take part in a Yell cluster project to use Due to several different circumstances it was moderation to ensure we have a shared not possible to do this project this year; a more understanding of standards and focussed project will be rolled forward into next expectations year.
