PREFACE

The philosopher, poet and novelist, George Santayana said: Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it. So it is good to reflect on what has gone before us. This is true of Society, our families, ourselves and even our diocese. We have quietly slipped by the 160th anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Middlesbrough. This came about as the result of the dividing of the Diocese of Beverley into the Diocese of Leeds and Middlesbrough on 20th December 1878. Bishop Cornthwaite was the last Bishop of Beverley and became the first Bishop of Leeds and the Administrator of Middlesbrough Diocese. On 18th December 1879, Richard Lacy was made the first bishop of Middlesbrough. So we should remember him as we approach next Christmas.

Bishop Lacy was the youngest bishop in the country at the time of his consecration, 38 years of age. There were around 33K Catholics in the Diocese, 55 priests, including 15 monks from Ampleforth. There were 36 parishes, 38 schools. His diocese was around 4,000 square miles; about 120 from north to south and 40 miles east to west.

Obviously the dimensions of the diocese have not changed much in those 160 years, but we know that statistics certainly have. Over the years they have gone up and down and up and down again. Seven bishops later we are not far from where we started, but we are in a different place, and a very different world. The geographical territory may not have changed much, but it is hard to find one’s way across the ethical and moral landscape today, especially when the compass has been discarded, even destroyed.

All the more reason we need light, hope and direction. And where will these precious gifts come from? Well, where they have always come from, Jesus Christ, the Light of the world, the Hope of the Nations and the Only Way. As we move from the Old Year to the New, I commend you and your families and friends, all our people, all our priests, deacons and religious, all our parishes and schools and institutions to Jesus Christ, our Way, our Truth and our Life.
