1. EVENT INFORMATION

COVID-19 continues to impact the preparation for the 2021 World University Winter Games. The health and safety of the Team Canada delegation continue to be the first priority for U SPORTS. Information in this regard will remain the deciding factors for participation and U SPORTS will continue to consult with FISU and the medical committee to ensure proper protocol is in place for our team of student- athletes, coaches, mission and medical staff. The information in this bulletin has been adjusted below to accommodate the postponement of the Games.

2021 Winter Universiade Games

The 30th Winter FISU World University Games will take place in the city of Lucerne, Switzerland which is a city in , embedded within an impressive mountainous panorama with Rihi, Pilatus and Titlis. Situated in the German-speaking portion of the country Lucerne is the most populous town in central Switzerland with a population of approximately 82,000 people. The 2021 Winter Games are scheduled to take place from December 11-21, 2021.

LUCEREN 2021

The Games takes place every two years in various cities around the world. It is one of the largest winter multisport events worldwide, second only in size to the Olympic Games. The Games will take place over 11 days and will host 1600 athletes from more than 50 countries competing in 10 sports in 7 venues.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Team Canada will be accommodated in the Athlete Village for the duration of the Games. The set up of the Games will be a decentralized village situation, whereby there will be 3 Clusters of Athlete Villages; Lucerne, Lenzerheide, . Allocation to the villages will be by sport and delegation.

The Athlete Villages will open to Team Canada from December 9 –22, 2021. Village designations will be provided in upcoming Sport Bulletins.

TRANSPORTATION

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE

There will be two points of arrival for Team Canada:

By Plane • Airport Zurich By Train • Lucerne Train Station (no transfer service to Andermatt and Lenzerheide) • Zurich Airport Train Station (for participants to Andermatt and Lenzerheide)

Participating sports are responsible for booking their team’s flights and providing detailed itineraries by the deadline dates stipulated.

Note: Athletes and coaches must be checked out of their accommodations in the athlete’s village within 36 hours of their sport’s final event.

TRANSPORTATION DURING GAMES

Transportation upon arrival and departure of the Games will be provided to all participants. Transportation during the Games to and from training, competition, etc. will be scheduled and provided for all participants in consultation with the Team Leader for each sport. Details of the Transportation Routes (ie. duration, distances) will be provided closer in upcoming Sport Bulletins.

2. TEAM CANADA 2019

COACHING CERTIFICATION STANDARDS

U SPORTS’ Coaching Certification Policy applies to all coaches representing Canada at the Universiade Games. It is important for U SPORTS to ensure a high quality of coaching at all games in an effort to produce high quality athletes and performances.

Full National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Level 3 certification, or the equivalent in the new NCCP to at least NCCP Competition-Development status, is required for all coaches representing Team Canada at the Summer and Winter .

Exemptions from Level 3 certification or Competition-Development qualifications are possible only in exceptional cases as determined by U SPORTS.

a) An exemption will be considered only if a coach has obtained full NCCP Level 2 certification or has Competition-Development In-Training status.

b) A coach may be granted a maximum of one exemption in his/her coaching career per sport.

c) An exemption may be granted on the premise that the coach plans to advance to full Level 3 or Competition-Development certification within two years.

d) Exemption requested must be officially submitted to U SPORTS as least 60 days prior to the start of the Universiade

ATHLETE ELIGIBILITY

Only the following may participate as a competitor in the Universiade:

a) Students who are currently officially registered as proceeding towards a degree or diploma at the university or similar institute whose status is recognized by the appropriate national academic authority of their country;

b) Former student of the institution mentioned in a) who have obtained their academic degree or diploma in the year preceding the event.

All competitors must satisfy the following conditions:

i) Be a national of the country they represent (with exception of Figure Skating) ii) Be at least 18 and less than 25 years of age on January 1st in the year of the event (WU2021: participants must be born between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2003) iii) Athletes participating in FISU Sport Events must represent the same country as in events of their respective International Federation, changes of sport nationality must follow respective IF rules

iv) No athlete or official under a current suspension from FISU, IF or the National Federation of his / her country may take part in the Winter Universiade.

3. FINANCIAL INFORMATION

GAMES PARTICIPATION COSTS

This event is completely self-funded and the estimated cost for each participants (i.e. athlete, coach, official) is outlined below. The U SPORTS Participation cost is $2075.

Sport delegations competing in the following sports must participate in covering the cost of international judges or referees to attend the Universiade:

PAYMENT

NON-REFUNDABLE deposits will be charged to all teams to secure a place on the Canadian delegation.

Team Sports (Ice Hockey, Curling): • 5000 euros per team (or the Canadian equivalent as stated by U SPORTS)

Individual Sports: • $200 per participant (athlete and coach) • Deadline for individual sport deposit: August 1, 2021
