Waanders, Zwolle 1995 Zie voor verantwoording: http://www.dbnl.org/tekst/_van012199501_01/colofon.php © 2012 dbnl / Rijksmuseum Vincent Van Gogh 6 Director's Foreword The Van Gogh Museum shortly after its opening in 1973 For those of us who experienced the foundation of the Van Gogh Museum at first hand, it may come as a shock to discover that over 20 years have passed since Her Majesty Queen Juliana officially opened the Museum on 2 June 1973. For a younger generation, it is perhaps surprising to discover that the institution is in fact so young. Indeed, it is remarkable that in such a short period of time the Museum has been able to create its own specific niche in both the Dutch and international art worlds. This first issue of the Van Gogh Museum Journal marks the passage of the Rijksmuseum (National Museum) Vincent van Gogh to its new status as Stichting Van Gogh Museum (Foundation Van Gogh Museum). The publication is designed to both report on the Museum's activities and, more particularly, to be a motor and repository for the scholarship on the work of Van Gogh and aspects of the permanent collection in broader context. Besides articles on individual works or groups of objects from both the Van Gogh Museum's collection and the collection of the Museum Mesdag, the Journal will publish the acquisitions of the previous year. Scholars not only from the Museum but from all over the world are and will be invited to submit their contributions.

With his insightful analysis of the Funeral Oration of St. Vincent de Paul, Rev. Udovic, in three introductory chapters, lays the groundwork for the reading of the actual Oration, placing it in the context of the history of Church and State in the seventeenth century. He shows also how Maupas du Tour carefully crafted his panegyric to avoid the censure of church authorities in his depiction of Vincent de Paul and his works, while, at the same time, artfully giving the Crown, Mazarin, and the nobles a place of honor in the text. Copious illustrations of significant persons and places give life to the book. A must for any serious study of Vincentian historiography. —Marie Poole, D.C. Historian and Author; Editor of Vincent de Paul: Correspondence, Conferences, Documents Everyone with an interest in Vincent de Paul will welcome this English translation of Maupas du Tour’s funeral oration.

Curry Dissertation director: Fr. Robert Imbelli Grace sows the seeds of God’s sacred word in every human life. One of theology’s most important functions is to furnish people with ways of perceiving these divine intimations in their concrete lives and relationships. Orientation to transcendental mystery is the sine qua non for initiation into faith. Theology must therefore lead people more deeply into the mystery of everyday existence as a preparation for the Christian life. At the same time, theology aims at expounding Christian teaching in as clear and intelligible a manner as possible.

Cinema and Theology: The Case of Heaven Over the Marshes Abstract André Bazins impact, as theorist and critic, is widely considered to be greater than that of any single director, actor, or producer, despite his early death (at only 40) of leukemia in 1958. He is credited with almost single-handedly establishing the study of film as an accepted intellectual pursuit, as well as with being the spiritual father of the French New Wave. In 1951 Bazin co-founded and became editor-in-chief of Cahiers du cinéma, the single most influential critical periodical in the history of the cinema. Bazin can also be considered the principal instigator of the equally influential auteur theory: the idea that, since film is an art form, the director of a movie must be perceived as the chief creator of its unique cinematic style.

On this the Feast of Saint Justin De Jacobis, a missionary par excellence, I announce to the worldwide Congregation the five projects that were granted the Mission Award for 2007. There is a brief discription of the history of each of the projects, as well as the goals and objectives proposed to make them realizable. I wish to encourage the Visitors to continue to promote not only the Mission Award, granted on 30 July every year, but also the Systemic Change Award, granted each 25 January on the Feast of the Foundation of the Congregation of the Mission. As I try to make clear each time these awards are announced, the overall objective is to stimulate among the provinces and individual confreres or teams of confreres creativity, which, when motivated by love, is infinite. This year only 11 projects were presented, perhaps because the date was advanced for presenting these projects, due to the fact that we were holding the Visitors’ Meeting in June, which is when we usually have our tempo forte meeting to select the winners. I encourage the Visitors to animate the members of their provinces to participate actively in these efforts to help improve our quality of evangelization for the Poor in our world today.

But how? Communists and democrats felt that they had the answers, but their answers often spawned little more than disillusion, protest, and unrest. Even as much of Europe managed to bounce back from war within only a few years, anxiety was often the principle result. Conflicting national identities, the development of youth culture, and a belief among many that Europe would either sink or swim as a single political and economic unit all shaped the postwar experience. This class will explore the story of European history from the end of World War II to the “War on Terror.” Topics will include (among others) the division of Europe into East and West, the rise of the European Union, the development of separatist nationalisms, and the astonishing proliferation of youth culture that both reflected and defined what took place on the political and economic stage. The class will include a combination of readings, lectures, and films. Students will be expected to participate actively in class discussion and activities, complete a series of short quizzes/papers, and ultimately write a substantial research paper. 2 REQUIRED TEXTS 1) Tom Buchanan, Europe’s Troubled Peace, 1945-2000 (London and New York: Blackwell Publishing, 2006).
