This flyer details the weekend Public Participation Events at the 2011 Australian National Championships for Magic: the Gathering. The program includes a Standard Constructed Qualifier for Pro Tour Philadelphia, organised tournaments in a wide variety of formats, and on-demand events – all with generous prizes!

nd Information about events on Friday 22 July can be found at http://www.mtgsydney.com.au.

Information about the Main Event (the invitation-only National Championships) can be found at http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Events.aspx?x=mtg/tcg/nationals/australia.

Programmed Events These are tournaments with fixed formats and starting times. All rounds are of 50 minutes duration (plus up to five extra turns to bring the match to a conclusion). Draft events allow 30 minutes to draft before 15 minutes of deck construction; Sealed Deck events allow 30 minutes of deck construction. Events are sanctioned where possible. Note that tournaments will start at the advertised time, but late entries are allowed (with zero-point byes awarded for the missed rounds).

Prizes QT Philadelphia offers prizes based on finishing position at the end of the Swiss rounds, with the top- 8 then playing off for the Pro Tour invitation. Other events award participation prizes of one booster per round you play, handed out when you leave the event. Programmed Events award an additional booster display to the winner (split amongst any/all players tied for first place on total match points).

Junior players (age 16 and under) get a bonus booster prize for every Programmed Event they enter. Proof of age must be presented upon request.

Continuous Event: MiniMasterMadness This activity runs across the weekend. Sign-up is free, and gets you 15 basic lands (3 of each type). Grab an opponent, then you each pay $5 to receive a lucky-dip out-of-print booster. Shuffle your booster into your lands, and play a best-of-three match: the winner gets an in-print booster prize. Play as often as you like, with a special prize for whoever plays against the greatest number of unique opponents across the weekend!

Continuous Event: CommanderChallenge This activity runs across the weekend. Rules for Commander are summarised at the end of this document, and more details can be found at http://mtgcommander.net. Sign-up for this event is free: you can provide your own Commander-legal deck; or you can purchase a preconstructed Commander deck from an on-site vendor, and receive a voucher for a free match! Grab at least one other person to play with (it’s a multiplayer format, so the more the merrier!), then you each pay $5 and play a game. Everyone gets an in-print booster for playing, and management will throw in an extra stack of boosters (half the number of players, rounded up) for the players to distribute amongst themselves as they see fit!

On-Demand Events These require a group of players with a common interest: the tournament staff will be happy to assist you with circulating a sign-up list. Both constructed and limited (sealed or draft) events are available, and are sanctioned where possible. These events run for three Swiss rounds, and have a “last-start” curfew of 7:00 pm each night.

Constructed events: format can be anything you can get a group of people to agree upon! Some ideas are listed at the end of this document, and more are available at http://www.thedci.com. Entry fee is $15 per player.

Limited (draft) events: an entry fee of $20 (Onslaught and later packs) or $30 (pre-Onslaught packs) per player gets each player a set of three boosters to draft. Drafts are usually conducted with one booster from each set in a “block”; but any mix of available stock is possible, with the agreement of the players.

Limited (sealed deck) events: an entry fee of $40 (Onslaught and later packs) or $60 (pre-Onslaught packs) per player gets each player either six boosters, or a tournament pack plus two boosters.

Deck Construction Rules You should be familiar with the Magic: The Gathering Tournament Rules, Infraction Procedure Guide, and Banned and Restricted Lists, all of which are linked from: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Article.aspx?x=magic/rules.

CONSTRUCTED FORMATS: minimum deck size 60 cards, optional 15-card sideboard, no more than four copies of any one card between deck and sideboard in total (except basic land, which has no restrictions). Swaps from the sideboard may be made between games on a one-for-one basis (the sideboard must always contain exactly 15 cards).

LIMITED FORMATS: minimum deck size 40 cards, unused cards are your sideboard. Any number of changes to your deck using sideboard cards may be made between games, but you must keep a minimum 40-card deck size. Required basic land is provided upon request.

Important Note Regarding Registration Players in DCI Sanctioned Events are required to have a DCI Membership Number in order to play. Bring your DCI Membership Card with you! DCI Membership is free, and new players can obtain a DCI Membership Card and Number from their local DCI Tournament Organiser, or at the Nationals themselves. Players will not be allowed to enter Sanctioned Events without either their DCI Membership Card, or knowledge of their DCI Membership Number. All Constructed events require a deck list to be submitted upon registration. Blank decklists are available for download at the website.
