The Chairman's Notes

We welcome the Robins to the Denplan today for our second match against Evesham this year. The first match was last month, when Winchester were beaten by three goals to one. In fact Evesham are having a great season so far and lie in third place in the league.

The Citizens are under the temporary management of Mick Catlin for three games concluding today, whilst Ian Saunders is away on Army business. He was in charge at North Leigh away and also on Tuesday night at Mangotsfield. This was a tough and high scoring match ending up with a 3-3 draw, a good result away to the sixth place club. It was touching to see that the Mangotsfield fans arranged a collection at the match for Joe Hayward, who broke his leg at the earlier game, which was abandoned because of his injury. This gesture by the Mangotsfield fans is evidence of and a reminder of the greater non league family.

Kind Regards

Paul Murray

Malcolm's Welcome

We welcome Evesham United to Winchester for today’s game. Earlier in the season we lost 3-1 despite leading 1-0 at the interval through Craig Feeney with Lance Smith, Liam Harding and Adam Smith scoring for Evesham. Last season we lost 1-0 at Evesham, but beat them 2-1 at Winchester in a game played shortly before Christmas with Adam Tomasso and Charlie Smeeton being our scorers. In both of last season’s games between the clubs the away team was unlucky to lose. When the teams met in the 2012/13 season both games were won by the away team with us winning 2-0 at Evesham in the first half of the season and Evesham winning 3-1 at Winchester in the second half of the campaign.

Evesham and Hereford are the two northernmost clubs in the division and if they were ever promoted to the Conference they would almost certainly be placed in the Northern Division as have the likes of Bishops Stortford, Oxford City and Gloucester City have at different times. They will not need reminding that they almost ended up in the Evostik Northern Premier this season, but rightly the decision was reversed, although in my view it would have been better if Cinderford were promoted at the outset and Stamford had not had their hopes of a relegation reprieve falsely built up.

In 1951-52 they joined the Combination, later the Midland Combination, and they played in this competition in 31 of the next 41 seasons, with a 7 year break from 1955/56 to 1964/65 to play in the Birmingham District League and Leagues. Their sixth Midland Combination title in 1991/92 saw them promoted to the Southern League where they have remained in ever since.

Their best season in the Southern League was 2003/04 when they finished third in the Western Division and were promoted to the Premier Division, although in 2011/12 they were relegated back to the South Western Division. In 2008/09 they reached the 1st round proper of the F. A. Cup for the first time where they lost to Torquay United, having the previous year been beaten by Halifax Town in a fourth qualifying round replay. In 1991/92 they reached the quarter finals of the F. A. Vase where they lost to eventual finalists Guiseley, In 2000/01 they won through three rounds of the F. A. Trophy, but lost a replay to Morecambe when victory would have put them into the last 16.

Evesham first came to my attention when in the second season of the F. A. Vase when they beat Moreton Town who were a good team at the time. They reached the 4th round proper of this competition twice in the first six years.

Players they have had who played who went on to play in the Football League are Gary Stevens, Simon Brain, Kevin Rose, Andy Preece and Billy Turley with Andy playing in the Premier Division for Crystal Palace where he was Chris Armstrong’s strike partner having been signed for £350,000.

Evesham is located in the Vale of Evesham which is often subjected to flooding, and has a lot of history attached to it.

They have achieved some good results this season and are very much in the running for promotion.
