2 The Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation SPRING 2017 NEWSLETTER

A LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD February 3rd, 2017 marked the 74th anniversary of the sinking of the USAT DORCHESTER and the selfless sacrifice of the Four Chaplains. The weeks surrounding February 3rd are very busy for us. In addition to our own banquet, which is depicted elsewhere in this newsletter, there are ceremonies, breakfasts and services in honor of the Four Chaplains going on all over the country. The Chapel staff and board try to attend as many of these ceremonies as possible, and not just those in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

In this issue of the newsletter, while we depict many of these ceremonies from , , New Jersey, Connecticut, New York and Virginia, there are many more being held all over the country by churches of many denominations, synagogues, American Legion Posts, VFW Posts, Marine Corps League Chapters, and the list goes on. It is very encouraging to see that the recognition of selfless service, and the spirit of inter faith cooperation continues in a very vigorous way, and in fact, seems to be growing.

And while the Chapel Staff spends a very large amount of time working with all of these groups hosting these services and ceremonies, I am pleased to report that our own banquet in Philadelphia on February 3rd attracted a record number of attendees, and was a huge success. I say this because it was a wonderful night in which the legacy of the Four Chaplains was shared with the Chief of Army Chaplains, Major General Paul Hurley, and with Patrick Hughes, Vietnam Combat Veteran, who currently operates a nationwide outreach to POW/MIA’s.

Concurrently, our work with the issues of Veteran joblessness, homelessness, substance abuse and PTS continues on an uninterrupted basis. To demonstrate the Chapel’s strong commitment to these issues, we hosted a one day Symposium on the topic of “How the Faith Community, Veterans Advocates and our civilian community respond to the Crisis of Opioid Overdose, Mental Illness, Suicide, Depression & Post Traumatic Stress”. This is one of the first undertakings of this kind in the city of Philadelphia, and it has drawn quite a bit of attention. It is our aim to continue to emphasize corrective action to stop the substance abuse that is effecting the Veteran population leading to an unacceptable number of suicides across our nation. Additional information about this Symposium is found further in this newsletter.

Finally, at our banquet on February 3rd, it was my responsibility to address the audience on the current state of the Chapel. In summary, what I reported is that our Legion of Honor program continues to expand and grow as we recognize more and more ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things. Our outreach to the Philadelphia Navy Yard community, in which the Chapel is placed, is growing, and the number of visitors to the Chapel is reaching unprecedented numbers. We are trying to grow our outreach to the veteran issues as described above, and we are limited by funding but we are doing our best to deal with the many, many requests that we are getting for job networking, housing and medical care. And in closing, I reported that for the first time in over 20 years, the Chapel posted a net gain in 2016 financial operations. We were in the black, not by a huge amount, but in the black finally nonetheless.

So, I encourage you to begin or renew your membership in the Chapel of Four Chaplains. Please reply back using the enclosed self- addressed and stamped envelope as many of you are doing in record numbers.

What I have learned from talking to many of you, from meeting so many young and older veterans who have served, from reaching out to children in schools and trying to harness their enthusiasm for selfless service, and in talking to our legacy families from the sinking of the DORCHESTER is this: People in our country are looking for a guide in which to navigate their lives by. What a wonderful example we have in the Four Chaplains who showed us all how to navigate with courage and selfless devotion under very difficult circumstances.

Louis A. Cavaliere, Captain, SWO, US Navy Retired

A NOTE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends and Supporters,

It’s late on a Tuesday evening and I’m beyond elated of all of the great things that we are doing at The Chapel of Four Chaplains, which is why I cannot go to bed without finishing this letter to you. I hope that you will enjoy this newsletter as much as I enjoy putting it together for you. I pray that it will fill your heart with gratitude for all that we are accomplishing with veterans outreach, new programs, weddings, events, Legion of Honor Programs, and more.

As you go through the newsletter, I hope you will pay close attention to the Legion of Honor recipients from 2016 and how many amazing individuals are continuing to give back to others. Those ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things. If you are past recipient, please be reminded that you are also able to nominate others to the program. The only major guideline is that you cannot nominate your family.

Our network of volunteers are growing everyday as well and we are very blessed to have such wonderful people visiting with us to help us continue the mission of the organization. If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to us.

On another note, I personally wish to thank everyone who has been a huge part in the successes these past five years of my being your Executive Director. It has been humbling to see how many people are returning and who are joining. However, I must note that our need for your continued support is even greater this year. In 2016 we were able to end the year in a positive way after almost 20 years in the red. We want to continue this momentum into the future to secure that the legacy of this organization lives on.

The Lost at Sea Anchor Memorial will be dedicated on May 20, 2017, Armed Forces Day and dedication bricks are still available. You may find this information on our website or by contacting the office.

As always, thank you for all that you have done, all that you continue to do and I hope to count on you in the future. I also wish to give a huge shout out to Michelle Nolfi the organization’s Administrative Coordinator for always being the glue that helps hold all of this together with me every day in the office.

Thankful for all of you,

Christine M. Beady

Office of Veterans Services

The Office of Veterans Services is led by two combat-disabled veterans who understand the challenges that veterans face when transitioning from military service to civilian life. Ralph Galati ’70, Director of Veterans Services, and Kevin Gelzhiser, Assistant Director for Veterans Services are committed to ensuring that veterans receive the support required to thrive at SJU and beyond.

Small Business and Entrepreneurship Programs The Erivan K. Haub School of Business (HSB) at SJU receives national recognition for its outstanding business programs, including its program in Family Business and Entrepreneurship, and has a robust alumni network of small business owners and entrepreneurs. Two key initiative of the Office of Veterans Services that builds on this strong foundation are our Small Business and Entrepreneurship Programs: The Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV), conducted in partnership with Syracuse University’s national consortium of universities; and the Veterans Entrepreneurial Jumpstart (VEJ), designed by the Office of Veterans Services. EBV focuses specifically on post-9/11 disabled veterans, and VEJ is open to any honorably discharged veteran.

These programs provide veterans with the opportunity to translate their skillset and military experience into a successful small business venture. The programs leverage the expertise of local entrepreneurs, small business owners, corporate executives, government and civic leaders, and the HSB faculty – all serving as guest speakers, lecturers, panelists, mentors and judges during the in-person residency period.

The challenge for veterans lies in their ability to find and enroll in business training that is specifically developed for veterans and that focuses on concepts and skills that translate into successful small business ownership. Our programs help veterans realize their goals by providing professional education, mentorship and business services at No Charge for veterans committed to small business ownership.

Program Curriculum Both programs offer a three phase training program with the following structure:  Phase 1: This is offered as an online course and provides basic business fundamentals. During this phase, veterans are required to create a draft of their business plan.  Phase 2: A nine day residency program is held on SJU’s campus at the HSB to provide more intensive education in topics such as: Business Planning; Finance and Accounting; Sales and Marketing; Time Management; Government Contracting; Legal; Operations; etc. Mentoring and one-on-one consultations are also provided. This phase ends with a Venture Pitch Competition where veterans present their venture plan to a panel of distinguished judges and receive direct feedback. Cash prizes are awarded to the finalists.  Phase 3: A 12-month period of support and mentorship that provides veterans with a suite of in-kind services necessary to execute business plans into successful business ventures.
