FOS Campaign Facts

Friends of Scouting Campaign (FOS)

• At the Council level, it costs $175 per year per youth member to provide Scouting program in Southern Arizona. • Approximately 25% of the funds needed for Catalina Council come from Friends of Scouting. • Any money raised by Friends of Scouting stays within Catalina Council, which ultimately supports our Scouts and leaders. • Contributions are 100% tax deductible. • This year’s goal for the Council-wide Friends of Scouting Campaign is $368,000.

Why is it important? How is my Unit or Child affected?

• As each of us know by looking at our children, Scouting develops character in youth as they grow into adults. • The Scouting program is more than just your unit. Catalina Council provides training, administrative support, activities, camps, etc. Without Catalina Council doing their part, our individual unit programs would suffer. • Review the brochure to see specifically how Catalina Council uses their resources to help Scouting in Southern Arizona.

How is the Family Campaign Run?

• The Council Campaign goal of $368,000 is divided into district goals. • Each district goal is divided into four areas of donors: Scouters, Community, LDS Stakes and Community Units. District Goals are: Executive Board $100,000 Old Pueblo District $92,000 Spanish Trails District $60,000 Cochise District $ 58,000 Santa Cruz District $ 58,000 • We are the key to success of the Family Campaign.

**This Letter is from the Council President to community unit Key 3’s to explain the importance of Friends of Scouting and resources available to them**

January 1, 2018 To: Chartered Organization Representatives Unit Committee Chairs Cubmasters, Scoutmasters, Advisors Thank you for your dedicated service to Scouting in the Catalina Council. You are a vital part of bringing this great program to thousands of youth and families throughout Arizona and preparing young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. The Scout Oath and Slogan remind us of our duty to selflessly help other people at all times and to do our good turn daily. We need your help to invite your chartered organization and its members, your unit leadership, and the families of your Scouts to invest in the character of Southern Arizona’s youth and support our council’s annual Friends of Scouting campaign. Our goals in the Friends of Scouting campaign are to:

• Give every Scout family a meaningful opportunity to support this effort; • Strengthen the connection between Scouting and your chartered organization; • Augment the appreciation for Scouting and its impact on our community; • Complete the drive by March 31, 2018; and • Be good stewards and account accurately for all donated funds.

The accompanying materials included in this packet (also available at catalinacouncil.org/fos) are designed to assist you in leading a successful Friends of Scouting effort. The materials included are:

1. 2018 FOS Campaign Guidelines and Timeline 4. Sample Letter from Unit Leadership to Scouting Families 2. FOS Brochures/Pledge Cards 5. Sample Script for Unit FOS Presentation 3. Seven Steps for a Successful FOS Campaign

We recognize that asking your chartered partner and Scouting families to support the council feels awkward and it is tempting to “let someone else do it.” Please resist that temptation – the council needs your support to continue supporting Scouting in our communities by providing camps, training, materials, advancement support and recruiting new Scouts into the program. Our current success is due to past generations “paying it forward” to keep Scouting going. It is now our turn to do the same.

Thank you for your support. We are counting on you to help us continue our mission to reach all youth who need the benefits that Scouting brings! Sincerely,

Brett Rustand Council President

(DATE two weeks before FOS presentation)

Dear Families of (your unit)

We hope you and your family will be able to join us at our (Troop Court of Honor, Blue and Gold Banquet) scheduled on (Date, Time, and Location). We are very proud of all of the boys’ achievements and extremely appreciative of all the parental involvement.

During the meeting (Name of Presenter, his/her Scouting position) will discuss the annual Friends of Scouting campaign which helps underwrite the cost of Scouting for all involved. As your church may “pass the plate” every Sunday, Scouting families are invited to “pass the plate” once a year to invite all who benefit from Scouting an opportunity to contribute financially. This campaign also finances program for boys who need Scouting but cannot afford to join. We thought it would be beneficial to send out this letter in advance for your information.

The Catalina Council serves over 5,000 volunteers who develop and enrich the lives of more than 6,700 youth, ages 6 through 20, throughout Southern Arizona. The council provides numerous benefits to all of our youth and adult volunteers. Some of these benefits include:

• Amazing summer camp with rich traditions and top of the line programs and activities • Professional guidance and support that mobilizes volunteers & recruits new families to Scouting • Supplemental accident insurance & primary liability insurance for all registered members

Friends of Scouting provides these benefits and many more to our youth, as well as numerous at-risk youth in challenging circumstances. Our goal this year is ($_____) with at least 75% of our families pledging a gift for the 2018 campaign.

We invite each family to consider making a gift of $175, to underwrite the cost of one Scout in the program for one year. 100% of all Friends of Scouting donations stays local. Compared to most activities like hockey, basketball and even piano lessons, Scouting is a great investment and a tremendous bargain.

At this activity you will receive a pledge brochure, which we will ask you to turn in before end of the meeting.

Please remember that any gift will be greatly appreciated regardless of the amount. Learn more about the Catalina Council and ways you can help at catalinacouncil.org/fos

Thank you!
