IDENTIFICATION: 82-8-18 BY: A, N, PAMM This commemorative was distributed in large numbers to school children when South Africa became a Republic on 31 May 1951. IDENTIFICATION: 83-3-2 BY: COLONEL A, GUAYDIER This medal is a Spanish medal, the "Medal of the Volunteers of Ciudad Real." It was given to the volunteers of the province of Ciudad Real, who served on the German front in Russia in World War II with the "Division Azul." Reference: "Condecoraciones de Espafia 1869-197S," by Juan Luis Calv5 Pascual (published in 1979).

IDENTIFICATION: 83-3-3 BY: REYNOLDS OLSEN-TJENSVOLD This is the medal of Scabbard and Blade, the honorary military in schools which have ROTC units. The medal shown is unquestionably one of the earliest issued - perhaps early in this century. Because G. G. Blatz was from Milwaukee, it is likely that this medal was given at the University of Wisconsin (the founding school). Later issues, in the 1920’s and 30’s, had the letters V Lambda on the lower panel of the shield below the crossed swords. A companion key of the same design for wear on one’s watch chain had on its reverse the recipient’s name and the name of his chap- ter (for example, mine says "A Company ist Regiment," indicating University of Wisconsin.

IDENTIFICATION: 83-3-6 BY: S. G, YASINITSKY Italian, Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago, 1933. This exists both as a portable and a table medal. See Hibler & Kappen, So-Called Dollars, No. 471.

34 IDENTIFICATION: 83-4-8 BY: RUBIN CHARLEY This is the ’s neck of the Military and Hospitaller of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem. The is bright green (watered), 37 mm. wide.

IDENTIFICATION: 83-4-8 BY: C, THOMAS YARINGTON, JR,, M,D. This appears to be a representation of the Order of St. Lazarus and Mt. Carmel. This is an order of France combining the Order of St. Lazarus, adopted by France in the llth century, and the more recently developed Order of the Lady of Mt. Carmel. This appears to be the officer or commander grade, as and above contained a fleur-de-lis in the area of the junction of the arms of the cross in each quadrant. The Order of St. Lazarus still exists as a sovereign order, and during the 20th century the Grand Masters of the Order have been Francisco de Borbon, Duke of Seville; Charles Philippe de Bourbon- Orleans, first prince of the blood of France; and Enrique de Bor- bony Borbon, present Duke of Seville.

IDENTIFICATION: 83-4-8 BY: JACK BODDINGTON The medal illustrated is either the Member Companion or the Offi- cer Companion insignia of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem. The ribbon is green, 1 1/2 inches wide, approximately the same shade as the Navy or Army Commendation . If the ribbon is plain, the grade would be that of Member Companion. If, however, the ribbon has a on it, then the grade would be that of Officer Companion. The Order of St. Lazarus is an independent Order of , approved under the listing of legitimate orders published by the International Commission on Orders of Chivalry and identifying the present as H.R.H. Prince Don Francisco de Borbon de Borbon. The Guinness Book of Records identifies the Order of St Lazarus as the oldest in the world, and it presently has Grand Priories in both the United States and Canada.
