The Nagavali, Vamsadhara, Suvarnamukhi, Vegavathi, Mahendratanaya, Gomukhi, Champavathi, Bahuda and Kumbikota Gedda are the important rivers of the District . The Vamsadhara river rises in the Eastern Ghats of Orissa State and enters Srikakulam District in Bhamini Mandal and finally falls into the Bay of Bengal near Kalingapatnam. The Nagavali and Suvarnamukhi rivers also originate in the Eastern Ghats while Nagavali in Vangara Mandal and the confluence joins the Bay of Bengal at Kallepalli near Srikakulam Rising in Pachipenta hills the Vegavathi river flows from west to east, ultimately joining the river Suvarnamukhi, Gomukhi joins Suvarnamukhi at Sirlam Village of Vizianagaram District and Mahendratanaya which is Atributory of Vamsadhara joins the later at Komanapalli Village in Hiramandalam Mandal. Another river of the same Eastern Ghats flows through Mandasa and Sompeta Mandals and falls into Bay of Bengal at Baruva. The Bahuda river also rises in the Eastern Ghats enters into Srikakulam District at Boddapadu Village of Ichapuram Mandal and flows through Ichapuram, Kaviti and Mandasa and enters into Bay of Bengal at Donkuru. The District has a seacoast of 193 Kms . Srikakulam was known by various names in the past, some of them being, Uttarandhra, Kalingandhra, Chicacole and Gulshanabad. Evidence of early man and his activities during Stone Age and Iron Age have been found at Sangamayya Konda and Dannanapeta in Srikakulam. Ruins of several Jain monuments and Buddhist relics have also been discovered near Sangamayya Konda. Historically, Srikakulam was a part of the Kalinga kingdom and was ruled by kings of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty for a period of more than 800 years from the 6th to the 14th Centuries A.D. The region was also under the power of the Gajapati Kingdom of Orissa during the medieval era. From 1707 to 1753 AD, it was under the rule of the Nizam of Hyderabad, being the centre of revenue collection. In 1857, Srikakulam was constituted as a municipality under the British rule. The district DMG, GoAP 9 board of Srikakulam as it exists today, was formed on 3rd January, 1951. 1.2: Boundaries and Topography : The District is skirted to a distance by Kandivalasagedda, Vamsadhara and Bahuda at certain stretchers of their courses white a line of heights of the great Eastern Ghats run from North East. Vizianagaram District flanks in the south and west while Orissa bounds it on the North and Bay of Bengal on the East. The District derived its name from Srikakulam its headquarters town. Srikakulam District was carved out in 1950 by bifurcating it from Visakhapatnam District. it remained unaffected in its territorial jurisdiction for quite some time. But in November, 1969 the District lost 63 Villages from Saluru Taluk and 44 Villages from Bobbili Taluk on account of their transfer to the then newly constituted Gajapathinagaram Taluk of Visakhapatnam District. Again in May, 1979, the District had undergone major territorial changes on account of the formation of new District with head quarters at Vizianagaram which involved transfer of Salur, Bobbili, Parvathipuram and Cheepurupalli Taluks to the new District. These Sivalingas are formed out of one single Sivalinga. As per the legend, this five Sivalingas were one which was owned by the Rakshasa King Tarakasura. None could win over him due to the power of this Sivalinga. In a war between deities and Tarakasura, Kumara Swamy and Tarakasura were face to face. Kumara Swamy used his Sakthi aayudha to kíll Taraka. By the power of Sakti aayudha the body of Taraka was torn into pieces. But to the astonishment of Lord Kumara Swamy all the pieces reunited to give rise to Taraka. Kumara Swamy repeatedly broke the body into pieces and it was re-unified again and again. This confused Lord Kumara Swamy and was in an embarrassed state then Lord Sriman-Narayana appeared before him and said “Kumara! Don’t get depressed, without breaking the Shiva lingham worn by the asura you can’t kíll him” you should first break the Shiva lingam into pieces, then only you can kíll Taraka Lord Vishnu also said that after breaking, the shiva lingha it will try to unite. To prevent the Linga from uniting, all the pieces should be fixed in the place where they are fallen by worshiping them and erecting temples on them. By taking the word of Lord Vishnu, Lord Kumara Swamy used his Aagneasthra (weapon of fire) to break the Shiva lingha worn by Taraka, Once the Shiva lingha broke into five pieces and was trying to unite by making Omkara nada (Chanting Om).
