11 ARTIST WIN THIS PAINTING STATEMENT BY MARYANN LUCAS

A rumor, early last October, in- spired the painting for this year’s Sag Harbor American Music Festival. “Conca D’Oro is closing.” We had to act quickly. Brad and Telly showed up a few days later outside of Conca D’Oro on a sunny Sunday afternoon. They unpacked their guitars and ca- sually started picking some notes and plucking some strings. As I snapped the photos, I noticed how the pair just fell into harmony. I could hear it in their song, and see it in their body language. There was a comfortable rhythm in their movements. Ah, sweet inspiration! It was that mutual com- fort - the ease of what is familiar - that I tried to capture in this year’s paint- ing. I saw it in their stance and the way they held their guitars. I saw it too, in the odd colored green awning flanking Conco D’Oro, and in the wooden bench just outside the open door. I saw it and remember it still, in the yellow glow of interior lights, glimpses of the ovens and stacked pizza boxes on the counter, all of which I hope to have conveyed in this year’s featured artwork. In the years to come, as the Sag Harbor American Music Festival and the village itself continue to evolve, it will be fun to see which musicians are paired with the locations I hold in my own mind.

BUY RAFFLE TICKETS TO WIN MARYANN LUCAS’ “MUSICIANS AT CONCA D’ORO,” now on display at the Romany Kramoris Gallery on Main Street in Sag Harbor, at our concerts and merchandise booths during the festival, which takes place this year from September 27 - 30. A limited amount of signed commemorative posters are also available for purchase. All proceeds will benefit the Sag Harbor Amer- ican Music Festival.

Special thanks to Hopefully Forgiven for being our muse!

Professional musicians are alchemists. They have the ability to take the original energy of any given room and often transform it to another plane. Sometimes it’s a slow burn where the crowd is biting at the gate and the band must follow the crowd’s lead and other times the band will grab you by the cuff of your jacket on the first song and throw you onto our map, our beaten, dirty road. In either case, you will leave in a different emotional place then when you started. It takes years to fine tune this dance but when we, the musicians, get you to the final destination of listening, sweaty dancing or even crying tears of joy or pain, I can assure you that we are think- ing this process through on many dimensions... the set list from the night or week before that lies in black sharpie on a limp piece of white paper at our feet and then the evolving show that is right there before us in that moment: twisting, contorting and flowing out. The Sag Harbor American Music Festival is such a joy because it brings this light, this laughter and this magical energy to the very streets of our town all while encour- aging the musicians that play it to be true to their original craft. I don’t think you can ask for more than that on any given day off... to walk through a beautiful historic town with the slightest chill of Fall in the air and seeing artists do their thing. To be moved. To be open. To celebrate being alive. To feel the timeless magic and flame that is live music.

In Loving Memory Edward T. Brady The Sag Harbor American Music Festival lost one of its biggest fans and long-standing volunteers this past winter. Ed Brady, (beloved father of poster artist Maryann Lucas,) not only was a festival sponsor, but worked the merchandise table since the festival’s inception. His specialty was diligently filling in the names and numbers on raffle tickets, so festival goers could enter the raffle but not miss a minute of the music.

While we know he is still here with us in spirit, his enthusiasm, humor and loyalty will be sorely missed.

Thanks for everything, Pop. Love you so much. Maryann
