Hank in the Chain: Indy Analysis Ross Is Nekst
July 1, 2013, Issue 352 Hank In The Chain: Indy Analysis In April, something pretty impressive happened in Indianapolis: Emmis’ WLHK (Hank FM) beat Cumulus’ longtime market leader WFMS in every major demo, while ranking No. 1 in each of them. The only exception was 35-64, but even there the two tied for third. It was a feat that WLHK PD Bob Richards and his team had been working towards since Richards took control of Hank FM in late 2009 after a 15-year run at WFMS – the last 11 of those as PD. Indicative of one of the format’s fiercest Bob Richards fights, WFMS reversed some of those gains the very next month by regaining its lead with persons 6+, Party Crashers: Capitol’s Luke Bryan (sporting a Georgia 25-54 and 35-64. “I’m proud of the WFMS team, who always Bulldogs t-shirt) invites a few friends to a listening party remain focused on our plan,” PD Mark Hamlin said at the for his brand new album Crash My Party. Rows of men and dogs marching abreast, in wide lines across the rolling hills, forcing the hares into the trap, a right-angled fence lined with chicken wire. Hares, being surface dwelling and nesting above ground, were unable to hide below in burrows like the smaller rabbits they flushed out. Dozens upon dozens of the big orange coloured hares, hundreds in the olden days he was told, being driven forward, frightened, to be trapped between the men and the wire. Then the frenzy began. Men armed with rifles, shotguns, golf clubs, cricket bats and whiskey began going berserk alongside their terriers and children. It wasn’t uncommon for a man or dog or boy to pick up a pellet wound here or there, so watch out they’d said. Seven years old and without a rifle of his own the boy spotted a big male hare hiding in a clump of scrub away from the main melee. Without a second thought he leapt shirtless upon the motionless creature and managed to somehow grab hold of one of its strong back legs. The hare kicked and bucked with the sharp claws of the free leg, slicing into his forearms and face so fiercely he risked losing an eye and just when his hands were slipping he switched grip, wrestling into a choke hold with both hands about the animal’s neck. -

Examining the Gender Disparity
ast year’s share of female-voiced singles in the Top 100 songs was the lowest in almost 20 years – 18%. Predictably, much was made of this in the media, with Country radio and LNashville’s good ol’ boy music business frequent targets of blame. Simple sound-bite explanations are grossly inadequate, however, when studying a phenomenon that has existed for decades, tran- scends media, is shaped by the broader culture and touches every aspect of society. In this extended editorial coverage, Country Aircheck dives deep into the numbers, speak- ing with scores of radio and music profession- als in pursuit of clarity. Capping the effort is this roundtable discussion with a record execu- tive, program director, artist and songwriter held late last month at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild, songwriter Natalie Hemby (“White Liar,” “Pontoon,” “Drinks After Work”), WSIX/ Nashville OM/PD Michael Bryan and BBR Mu- sic Group EVP Jon Loba offered thoughtful Karen Fairchild, Michael Bryan, perspective, shared a few laughs and came to Natalie Hemby, Jon Loba agreement on more than a few points. WOin MEN COUNTRY Examining The Gender Disparity Country Aircheck: We just stood in the a hard time with is, a lot of people want to write female artists trying to adapt a male song. And she rotunda and looked at the Hall of Fame with me because they want to get a female cut. But said he told her flat out, there’s not as much solo plaque for The Carter Family and Mother at the end of the day, I just want to write a great female stuff being cut and none of it is connecting Maybelle.
