REGION 2 SENSITIVE SPECIES EVALUATION FORM

Species: gryposepala Wallr. hooked agrimony

Criteria Rank Rationale Literature Citations Known from scattered localities in nw-most (Crook Co) WY and sw SD; thence s and e through the nw ¼ and e ½ of NE, and ne-most KS. [Vouchers at KANU from Marshall Co, KS; Cherry and Howard Cos, NE; • Freeman in prep. 1 Todd Co, SD; and Crook Co, WY. Evaluator has not seen the voucher report in Great Plains Flora • Great Plains Flora Association 1977 Distribution B Association from Elk Co, KS.] • Hartman 1997 within R2 Status: G5; KS S1; WY S1. • McGregor 1991 Confidence in Rank High or Medium or Low • Ertter 1993 Species apparently occurs in widely but discontinuously distributed populations. Reported by Gleason & • Freeman in prep. Cronquist from “ME to Ont. and MT, s to NJ, IN, KS, and in the mountains to TN and NC; also in CA and • Gleason & Cronquist 1991 NM.” Reported by Wessel & Theiret from Harlan Co, KY. Reported by Steyermark from a few widely 2 scattered localities in s-central and n MO. Reported by Great Plains Flora Association from widely scattered • Great Plains Flora Association 1977 • Martin & Hutchins 1980 Distribution C localities from MT, ND, MN, s through SD, IA, NE, KS, and MO (although Ownbey & Morley map species outside R2 throughout MN). Reported by Martin & Hutchins from a single locality in the n-central part of NM. Reported • McGregor 1991 by Ertter from throughout CA and Central America. • Ownbey & Morley 1991 Confidence in Rank High or Medium or Low • Steyermark 1996 • Wessel & Thieret 2000 Evaluator was unable to find any direct information about species’ dispersal capability. However species is likely to be animal dispersed and species appears to occupy a rather wide variety of habitats. 3

Dispersal B Capability Confidence in Rank High or Medium or Low Species does not appear to be particularly common anywhere within its range. However, it has not received a state ranking in either NE or SD and may be more comparatively common in the n part of R2. 4

Abundance in B R2 Confidence in Rank High or Medium or Low Evaluator was unable to find any direct information about population trends within R2, although it seems probable that species is secure throughout much of the ne part of the Region. 5

Population D Trend in R2 Confidence in Rank High or Medium or Low Observation of herbarium specimen labels at KANU reveals that species is found in a variety of habitats, including sandy prairie pastures, open woods, floodplain forests, and wooded ravines. Ertter and McGregor 6 both report that species requires wet-mesic soils; Wessel & Theiret report collecting species in somewhat • Ertter 1993 • McGregor 1991 Habitat Trend B disturbed habitat. It seems likely that, as a group, this broad array of suitable habitats has not suffered much in R2 degradation, but further study is warranted. • Wessel & Thieret 2000 Confidence in Rank High or Medium or Low

Species: Agrimonia gryposepala Wallr. hooked agrimony

Criteria Rank Rationale Literature Citations Species is found in a wide variety of habitats [see sect 6]. It seems likely that, as a group, this broad array of 7 suitable habitats is not particularly vulnerable to degradation, but further study is warranted. Habitat

Vulnerability B or Modification Confidence in Rank High or Medium or Low Perennial forb. Flowering mid June through late July; fruiting mid July through late September. Evaluator was unable to find any other information about species’ life history. 8 Life History B and Demographics Confidence in Rank High or Medium or Low Evaluator: Caleb A. Morse, R.L. McGregor Herbarium (KANU), University of Kansas Campus West, 2045 Constant Ave, Lawrence KS 66047 Date: 12/30/01

1 Likely is defined as more likely to occur than not occur on the National Forest or Grassland. This generally can be thought of as having a 50% chance or greater of appearing on NFS lands.
