It started off as a DUST MUSTER, then it turned into a FLOOD MUSTER, but finally ended up as the first ever MCDONALD’S MUD MUSTER! The McDonald’s Mud Muster event on Saturday 19th October was a huge success, with 373 people taking part in either a 5km or 10km course at Rangitikei Farmstay. Slippery hills, wall climbs, net crawls, creepy culverts and lots of dams made up the exciting and somewhat hilly course, with everyone crossing the finish line with huge grins on their faces! Sport Wanganui and Rangitikei Farmstay were the driving force behind getting this event off the ground for its first year, and would like to take this opportunity to thank McDonald’s Wanganui for their sponsorship. Congratulations to everyone who took part, and we look forward to seeing you again in 2014!

Two new positions have been created in the region to drive the further development of two progressive Wanganui sports codes. A Development Officer has been appointed for both Bike and Kayak/Triathlon. In a partnership agreement between Sport Wanganui and the clubs concerned, funding for the roles was secured through NZ Community Trust (NZCT) and the KiwiSport Regional Partnership Fund (RPF). NZCT have provided a notably significant contribution to the project, as one of New Zealand’s biggest funders of amateur sport for people of all ages and abilities. Norman Gruebsch is the newly-appointed Development Officer for Cycling. He will work on behalf of the Wanganui Cycling Club, the Taumaranui Cycling Club, the Ruapehu Mountain Bike Club and the Wanganui Mountain Bike Club. On Saturday 2nd November, 15 schools took part in the Mitre 10 MEGA Toughen Up Challenge, to see if they had what it takes to compete in the annual Mitre 10 MEGA Tough Kid™ event in December. While the teachers sat and waited patiently in the freezing water, the teams of five had to bang nails into wood, test their accuracy by throwing balls into the hoop, bob for apples, navigate through some obstacles with an egg and spoon and balance their team mate in a wheelbarrow! To finish the race off, each school had to push a Suzuki Swift car, provided by David Jones Motors, across the finish line. Wanganui Intermediate School, Kaitoke School, St Marcellin School, St John’s Hill School and Castlecliff School all excelled in their rounds, walking away with a $100 Gilbertson Mitre 10 MEGA store voucher each. Congratulations to all schools who took part, and we look forward to seeing you all at the Mitre 10 MEGA Tough Kid™ event at Cooks Gardens on Friday 6th December.

Philip is working his way back to a healthier life. Philip’s success on the Green Prescription programme has inspired him to continue on the path to a healthier lifestyle. Philip stopped smoking earlier this year and started to gain weight. “I was your typical couch potato. I smoked and didn’t think much about my health. I knew this wasn’t the right way to be so I did the hardest thing I could imagine – I gave up Kimberley smoking. I was already overweight and stopping smoking just made me put on more weight”. Because his work hours meant he didn’t finish until after 6pm most days, he was encouraged by the GRx coordinator to try Joshua, Jake, Kyah the Green Prescription bootcamp classes at 5.30am. Team building activities are designed for improving team performance, but are not limited to sports teams! One sure way to get a group of people working together is to put them in a boat and encourage them to – quite literally – row the same boat. Rowing in a crew of eight is a perfect team building activity; balance and co-ordination are key factors in successfully sailing an eight-seater long boat, with eight pairs of legs and arms (and heads) all needing to work in unison. It’s either row ‘in sync’… or simply sink! Sport Wanganui recently hosted a group of General Managers from fellow Regional Sports Trusts around the country. The GM’s conference is an opportunity for sharing ideas and best practice, and, in a surprise to the visitors, the rowing session was scheduled into the two-day event as an important practical element. Following that, the Wanganui Rugby Union was host to the code’s Regional Development Officers from all parts of the country. Sport Wanganui took them out rowing, and organised a team challenge event at Cooks Gardens. The activities on land were designed to showcase different styles of leadership by putting them into a practical setting. What a great way to learn!

March 2013 - Starting with the basics. Room 9 from Tawhero School started swimming lessons in February 2013 and have been going to the Splash Centre every week during the school terms. This was all brought about by Brian and Norma Foley who generously funded this initiative and plan to continue in to 2014. Brian and Norma are poolside at every lesson and extremely proud to see how far the children have come during the year. At the start of the year their swimming ability was virtually nil and now every child has improved, with some now able to swim 25 metres of the pool. The children will have their last lesson on Friday 6 December with a shorter lesson, certificates for the children and a BBQ to celebrate.

November 2013 - look how far they have come! Ethan Daly, pictured with instructor Christine, Pictured above with Brian and Norma. was the first to swim 25 metres in both freestyle and backstroke.
