FORMER CHAMPS DJOKOVIC, MURRAY, NADAL, TSONGA LEAD QF LINE-UP

 DAY 5 PREVIEW: The winners of nine of the last 10 Rogers Cup titles are still in contention to be holding the trophy with (2007,’11,’12), (2009,’10) (2005,’08,’13) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (2014). The four former Rogers Cup champions in the quarter-finals is the most since 2010, when there were also four (Federer, Djokovic, Murray, Nadal). Both Djokovic, the No. 1 seed, and Nadal, who won the tournament when it was last staged in Montreal (d. Raonic), will contest both the singles and doubles QF on Friday: Djokovic faces qualifier Ernests Gulbis, playing his sixth match in Montreal, before partnering w/ Tipsarevic to face J Murray/Peers. Nadal faces No. 4 seed , the only player in the last eight to have never previously reached the Rogers Cup QF, before joining Verdasco to take on top seeds Bob and . Murray and Tsonga face off in the QF for a second straight year (2014 Tsonga d. Murray) while No. 16 seed bids to reach his second Rogers Cup SF (2012) against unseeded Jeremy Chardy, who is looking for his first ATP Masters 1000 QF win (0-3).

 BIG FOUR DOMINANCE: Three of the Big Four – Djokovic, Murray and Nadal – are into the quarter-finals, which last occurred at the Rogers Cup in Toronto 2010, when all four (three plus Federer) advanced to the semi-finals; all four also reached the quarter-finals in Montreal in 2009.  Isner opened on Tuesday hitting 23 aces (saving all three break pts.) in a 6-4 6-7(6) 6-3 win over and beat Pospisil for the second time in two weeks (also Washington 3R), avenging his Rogers Cup R1 defeat two years ago with a 7-6(1) 4-6 6-3 win. On Thursday he beat Nick Kyrgios 7-5 6-3 to book his QF spot.  Isner has won 11 of his last 12 matches since start of summer hard court circuit (won Atlanta, d. Baghdatis; Finalist in Washington, l. to Nishikori).  Isner has reached two ATP World Tour Masters 1000 finals (Indian Wells 2012, l. to Federer; Cincinnati 2013, l. to Nadal) and four SFs (including Toronto 2012, l. to Gasquet). He reached fourth SF in Miami in 2015 (l. to Djokovic) and also reached QF in Madrid (l. to Berdych).  Isner has a 6-1 career record in ATP Masters 1000 QFs and has a 16-5 record in ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in 2015.  One of three American winners on ATP World Tour this season along with Sock (Houston) and Rajeev Ram (Newport).  Isner ended 2014 as the top American for third straight season and finished in Top 20 for the fifth year in a row, winning his eighth and ninth titles in Auckland (d. Lu) and Atlanta (d. Sela).  Chardy is playing his seventh Rogers Cup (10-6). The Frenchman has matched his best run in Canada, which came in Toronto in 2010 when he beat two Top 10 players to reach QF (d. No. 9 Verdasco, No. 6 Davydenko, l. to No. 2 Djokovic). In 2014, he reached 2R (l. to Tsonga).  Originally drawn to face Gasquet in the 1R (withdrew with illness), he beat lucky loser Mahut 6-1 7-5 before downing Leonardo Mayer 4-6 7-6(4) 6-2 to reach 3R, where he fought back against Ivo Karlovic to win 4-6 7-6(1) 6-4.  Chardy reached his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 QF in Toronto in 2010 (2R d. No. 9 Verdasco, 3R d. No. 6 Davydenko, l. to Djokovic). He has now reached three further QFs, most recently in Rome last year (l. to Raonic). He is looking to reach his first career ATP Masters 1000 SF. This is his 53rd ATP Masters event (43-52).  Chardy is second- lowest-ranked player remaining at No. 49 (behind No. 87 Gulbis).  Chardy has now reached quarter-finals of three events in 2015, also Marseille (l. to Simon) and Houston (l. to Anderson). He has an 0-6 record against Top 10 opposition in 2015 (8-38 all-time).  Chardy ended 2014 in the Top 30 for the first time at a year-end high No. 29, reaching the QF or better seven times during the season.

 Djokovic is the top seed in Canada for the fifth straight season. The world No. 1 and three-time former champion (2007, ’11-12) has a 28-5 record. Lost to eventual champ Tsonga in 3R last yr. th  Djokovic won his 250 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 match in the 2R (d. Bellucci 6-3 7-6(4). After beating 6-2 6-1 he now has 251 wins. Only Roger Federer (321) and Rafael Nadal (296) have more ATP Masters 1000 match wins. th  Djokovic’s ATP Masters 1000 title in Rome was 24 of his career, surpassing Federer’s 23 titles and leaving only Nadal, with 27, ahead of him. The Serb is bidding to win a record-equaling fifth ATP Masters 1000 title of season (Djokovic 2011, Nadal 2013).  Djokovic has won the last five ATP Masters 1000 events he has entered (2014 Paris, 2015 Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo and Rome – withdrew from Madrid).  Djokovic comes into QF on a 28-match winning streak at ATP Masters 1000 level, dating back to Paris-Bercy 2014. The last player to beat him was Federer (Shanghai 2014 SF). th  Djokovic claimed the 50 ATP World Tour title of his career in Indian Wells (d. Federer), the second of six titles (in eight finals) so far this season, including his 8th and 9th titles (Australian Open, d. Murray; Wimbledon, d. Federer).  Only three players have beaten Djokovic in 2015: Karlovic (Doha QF), Federer (Dubai final) and Wawrinka (Roland Garros final). He has an 18-2 record against Top 10 opposition in 2015.  Djokovic finished 2014 at No. 1 for the third time in four years (2011-12, ’14), winning an ATP World Tour-high seven titles in eight finals.  Gulbis is playing main draw at the Rogers Cup for the seventh time (10-6) after qualifying. He reached QF in Montreal in 2013 (l. to Raonic), his career-best result in Canada. In 2014, reached the 2R (l. to Benneteau).  Gulbis beat practice partner 3-6 7-6(8) 6-1 (saving two match pts.) in the 1R before downing Lukas Rosol 6-2 5-7 6-3 in 2R and fellow qualifier 6-4 6-4 in 3R.  Gulbis arrived in Montreal with just five wins in 2015 (now 8-17). He has lost his opening match at 12 events in 2015, most recently 1R in Hamburg (l. to ).  Gulbis, at No. 87 the lowest-ranked quarter-finalist, is trying to reach his first ATP World Tour SF since Moscow 2014 (l. to Bautista Agut).  Gulbis’s previous best result in 2015 was a QF appearance in Nice in May (l. to Thiem).  Gulbis is 0-1 against Top 10 opposition (16-42 career). His last Top 10 wins came at Roland Garros 2014 (R16 d. No. 4 Federer, QF d. No. 6 Berdych, SF l. to No. 2 Djokovic).  Gulbis reached SF of Rome in 2010 (1R d. No. 1 Federer, l. to Nadal). This is his seventh ATP World Tour Masters 1000 QF overall (1-5 record in Masters QFs), including two in 2014 (Indian Wells, l. to Isner; Madrid, l. to Ferrer). th  Nadal returns to Rogers Cup action for the 10 time (28-6 record) and first since winning his third title in Montreal in 2013 (d. Raonic). The No. 7 seed also won in 2005 (d. Agassi) – his third of a record 27 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles, and first title on hard courts. Also won in ‘08 (d. Kiefer). He has a 6-3 record in Rogers Cup QF matches.  Opened on Tuesday with a 7-6(4) 6-3 win over Stakhovsky before beating 6-3 6-3 to reach QF.  Nadal arrived in Montreal with three ATP World Tour titles in 2015 – Buenos Aires (d. Monaco), Stuttgart (d. Troicki), Hamburg (d. Fognini) – but, for the first time since 2005, without an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title to his name.  Nadal has also reached doubles QF (w/Verdasco) and will face the Bryans today (final match on Banque Nationale). Has nine career doubles titles, including in Doha in January  Nadal is the only player to have won at least one ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title for 10 consecutive seasons (2005-14). For the first season since winning his maiden ATP Masters title in Monte-Carlo (2005, d. Coria), Nadal has not won an ATP Masters title prior to the Rogers Cup.  Nadal finished 2014 in the Top 3 for the ninth time in past 10 years (except 2012), capturing four titles in seven finals and extending his streak of winning at least one Grand Slam title to a record 10th year in a row with his ninth crown at Roland Garros.  Nishikori is through to his first Rogers Cup QF (previous best 2013 3R, l. to Gasquet). This is his third main draw in Canada (missed last year with infected toe). In 2012 debut, l. to Querrey in 2R.  Nishikori is only player appearing in Rogers Cup quarter-finals for first time. th  Nishikori claimed the 50 ATP Masters 1000 win of his career in his opening match (2R, d. Andujar 6-3 6-3). His 6-4 6-4 3R win over Goffin gives him a 51-31 record since making his ATP Masters debut in Indian Wells in 2008 (l. 1R to Cilic), and entered qualifying for his first ATP Masters event in Montreal in 2007 (l. Q1 to Gabashvili).  Nishikori has reached four ATP Masters SFs (2011 Shanghai; 2014 Miami, Paris-Bercy; 2015 Madrid) and one final (Madrid ‘14, l. to Nadal). Has a 5-3 career record in ATP Masters 1000 QFs.  Nishikori arrives after winning his third ATP World Tour title of the season in Washington (d. Isner). Six of his 10 career titles have been at the 500 level. He also repeated titles in Memphis (d. Anderson) in February and Barcelona (d. Andujar) in April.  Tsonga reached the SF on three of his four visits to the Rogers Cup, exiting in the final four in 2009 (l. to Murray) and 2011 (l. to Djokovic) before winning in 2014 (d. Federer), a run that saw the Frenchman beat four Top 10 players (3R Djokovic, QF Murray, SF Dimitrov, F Federer).  Tsonga defeated Coric 6-4 6-4 in a rain-delayed match carried over to Tuesday to reach 2R, where he beat Bautista Agut 5-7 7-6(6) 7-5. Then posted 7-6(7) 6-3 win over .  Tsonga became first Frenchman to win the Canadian title in its history, dating back to 1881, also becoming the first ATP Masters 1000 winner ranked outside the Top 10 since No. 26 Ivan Ljubicic at Indian Wells in 2010.  His only opening round loss in Canada came in 2012 when he fell to countryman Jeremy Chardy.  Tsonga is a two-time ATP World Tour Masters 1000 champion (Toronto 2014, Paris-Bercy 2008, d. Nalbandian). He also reached the Paris-Bercy final in 2011 (l. to Federer) a further four SF and 14 QF. Since winning in Toronto, he had not advanced beyond the 3R until now, a span six ATP Masters (missed Shanghai, Indian Wells). This is his 59th ATP Masters event (97-56).  Tsonga is making his fourth Rogers Cup QF appearance – he has never lost in this round (3-0).  Comes in ranked No. 24 after last year’s Emirates ATP Ranking points (1,000) came off this week.  After missing first two and-a-half months with an arm injury, Tsonga returned in Miami in late March. Best result of year SF at Roland Garros for second time in his career (l. to Wawrinka; also 2013). Playing in first tournament since falling in 3R at Wimbledon (l. to Karlovic in four sets).  Tsonga finished 2014 as the No. 1 Frenchman and inside the Top 15 for the seventh year in a row.  Tsonga is playing for first time since QF tie vs Great Britain, where he lost to Murray in 2nd match (GBR d. FRA 3-1).  Murray won back-to-back Rogers Cup titles in 2009 (d. del Potro) and 2010 (d. Federer). The No. 2 seed also reached QF in 2014 (l. to champion Tsonga). He is playing his 10th Rogers Cup.  Murray beat 6-4 7-5 to book his spot in the 3R where he dispatched Gilles Muller 6-3 6-2 for his 50th win of the season (50-8). He is undefeated against left-handers in 2015 (10-0, 69-18 career) st  Murray is playing his 81 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event this week. Since making his debut in Cincinnati in 2005 (1R d. Dent, 2R l. to Safin) he has amassed a 170-68 record, has won 10 titles, reached a further nine SFs and 19 QFs.  Murray reached the Australian Open final for a fourth time (l. to Djokovic) before claiming three titles in 2015 (Munich d. Kohlschreiber, Madrid d. Nadal, London d. Anderson) and reaching the semi-finals at Roland Garros (l. to Djokovic) and Wimbledon (l. to Federer).  Murray has a 6-5 record against Top 10 opposition in 2015 (77-69 career).  Murray finished 2014 in the Top 6 for a seventh year in a row after extending run of winning at least one title to nine straight seasons.
