Book Review Frithjof Schuon: Messenger of the Perennial Philosophy by Michael Oren Fitzgerald (Bloomington, IN: World Wisdom, 2010). Review by Harry Oldmeadow Source: Crossing Religious Frontiers (Studies in Comparative Religion series), edited by Harry Oldmeadow (Bloomington, IN: World Wisdom, 2010) © World Wisdom, Inc. www.studiesincomparativereligion.com An issue of Studies in Comparative Religion dedicated to the theme “Crossing Religious Frontiers” could hardly find a more apposite subject than the life and work of Frithjof Schuon. Indeed, two of Schuon’s essays feature in this very issue. His work first appeared in the Anglophone world with the publication in 1953 of The Transcendent Unity of Religions, a book which articulated the metaphysical basis of the inner or essential unity of the world’s great religious traditions. This remarkable work was followed, over the next half-century, by more than thirty books in which Schuon provided a peerless exegesis of immutable metaphysical and cosmological principles, and an explication of their applications and ramifications in the boundless world of Tradition. These works, written in crystalline prose, stand as a beacon for those lost in the spiritual wastelands of modernity. Many years ago, in introducing one of Schuon’s books, Seyyed Hossein Nasr wrote: “His authoritative tone, clarity of expression, and an ‘alchemy’ which transmutes human language to enable it to present the profoundest truths, make of it a unique expression of the sophia perennis”.1 Quite so. Now we have to hand a biography of this frontier-crosser extraordinaire. For many readers of this journal, Schuon—metaphysician, poet, artist, spiritual master— requires no introduction. -

We have sometimes dwelt on etymologies with a view to showing that the doctrines referred to are implicit in the very structure of the sacred languages in which they are stated.1 (Ananda K. Coomaraswamy) central challenge in discussing or writing about sacred A psychology is “what to call it?” A significant part of this dilemma is that philosophy, psychology and religion prior to the European Enlightenment of the seventeenth/eighteenth centuries were intercon- nected and anchored in the Sacred, in contradistinction with how they are viewed in the modern world as autonomous and eclipsed of their sacred function. Modern psychology and psychiatry for that matter, seek to treat the human psyche in a way that is devoid of its original meaning—“science of the soul”—which recognized the ultimate source of the human psyche’s health and well-being by what transcended it. The course begins with an introduction to current approaches and issues related to the study of Native American religions and spiritualities, followed by an historical outline and concludes with reflections on theoretical and methodological issues including the question of representation. Rather than arguing for a normative, central or dominant account of the religions and spiritualities of the Native Americans, we will seek to develop a balanced approach that seeks a deeper appreciation of the interconnectedness and diversity across the religions and spiritualities of the Native Americans. H(1863-1950) lived one of the most controversial lives of the 20th century. To most Americans, he is best-known from Black Elk Speaks: Being the Life Story of a Holy Man of the Oglala Sioux, as told through John G. Neihardt (Neihardt, 1979). It chronicles his life as a warrior, wild-west show dancer, and medicine man (photo right) and, although called his life story, the book ends abruptly in 1890 at the Wounded Knee massacre on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, where Black Elk as a 27-year old was wounded. Black Elk dressed as a distinguished elder, probably at the Duhamel's Sioux Indian Pageant, Black Hills, South Dakota, W. Ben Hunt, photographer, ca . 1939. This image is accessible online in the Marquette University Digital Collections. In 1929, Black Elk and the Duhamel family organized a pageant near the developing Mount Rushmore Monument. The pageant included short renditions of Lakota ceremonies and dances narrated by Black Elk to educate tourists about Lakota heritage. It is believed that Black Elk's evolving narration provided the basis for his last collaborative book, The Sacred Pipe: Black Elk's Account of the Seven Rites of the Oglala Sioux, for which he was interviewed in 1947 and 1948. -

In the early 1900’s, John Neihardt attempted to better understand the Lakota culture by interviewing Black Elk about the Ghost Dance of 1890. Originally, Neihardt’s intention was to use the information he gathered as a backdrop to his impending novel. Instead, in 1930, he wrote Black Elk Speaks, which was based on the interview of Black Elk on Lakota Culture. Originally, the book was touted as a lens into authentic Native American religion; information that was traditionally internal was made available to outsiders. Throughout decades the book has been accepted as a valuable primary source of indigenous culture. The Lakota Ghost Dance filled a religious void in Lakota culture that resulted from generations of oppression of tribal members by Anglo Americans. -

From Logos to Bios: Hellenic Philosophy and Evolutionary Biology by W.A. de Beer Degree: D Litt et Phil Subject: Religious Studies Supervisor: Prof Danie Goosen Summary: This thesis deals with the relation of Hellenic philosophy to evolutionary biology. The first part entails an explication of Hellenic cosmology and metaphysics in its traditional understanding, as the Western component of classical Indo-European philosophy. It includes an overview of the relevant contributions by the Presocratics, Plato, Aristotle, and the Neoplatonists, focussing on the structure and origin of both the intelligible and sensible worlds. Salient aspects thereof are the movement from the transcendent Principle into the realm of Manifestation by means of the interaction between Essence and Substance; the role of the Logos, being the equivalent of Plato’s Demiurge and Aristotle’s Prime Mover, in the cosmogonic process; the interaction between Intellect and Necessity in the formation of the cosmos; the various kinds of causality contributing to the establishment of physical reality; and the priority of being over becoming, which in the case of living organisms entails the primacy of soul over body. -

Robbins One of the most important books in Plains Indian religion and literature is Black Elk Speaks, the collaborative effort of Black Elk, the Oglala-nDly man, and John G. Neihardt, the poet. Both men ~ere mystics. Their cooperative effort pro- 1 duced, in John Neihardt's ~ords, "The Book That Would Not Die." In hIs preface to the 1961 edition. Neihardt tells us that he sought out Black Elk to learn about the Ghost Dance religion, which appealed so strongly to the Sioux in 1890, and led to the Wounded Knee Massacre. Neihardt needed some inside knowledge about this phenomenon; he was trying to complete the epic Cycle of the West and poetry was his calling. Neihardt ~as ~orking on The Song of the Messiah, the last volume of the §ycle. He felt he was close to finishing his epic, and he wante to interview a holy man who had been involved in the messianic Ghost Dance movement. Obviously, Black Elk gave him much more than he ex pected to get. At their first meeting, Black Elk said to Neihardt, through an interpreter. ~AS I sIt here, I can feel in this man beside me a strong desire to know the things of the Other World. He has been sent to learn what I know, and I will teach him" (BES, xvii). Black Elk S~eaks was published in 1932. Unlike other works born in that per~od, it has lived on. The German translation, Ich Rufe Mein Volk, was published in 1953; this was also the year-or-tne-Flemish version. -

From very ancient times, the inner light, Purusha or Person, the ‘I-I’ shining in and as the Heart, had been identified as Sat-Chit-Ananda, Being-Awareness-Bliss. But the teaching was not precisely understood, nor was it widely taught or applied in practice. In the Ramana Gita, Supplement to the Forty Verses, and in many sections of Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi, Bhagavan has clarified, simplified and driven home the teaching that the Heart, Being-Awareness-Bliss and the ‘I’ are three concepts standing for one sole Reality. -

Guénon by Marco Pallis Memories of the great man whose centenary we are now wishing to celebrate go back, for me, to the late 1920s, when I was studying music under Arnold Dolmetsch whose championship of ancient musical styles and methods in Western Europe followed lines which Coomaraswamy, whom he had known personally, highly approved of, as reflecting many of his own ideas in a particular field of art. Central to Dolmetsch’s thinking was his radical rejection of the idea of “progress,” as applied to the arts, at a time when the rest of the musical profession took this for granted. The earlier forms of music which had disappeared from the European scene together with the instruments for which that music was composed must, so it was argued, have been inferior or “primitive” as the saying went; speak ing in Darwinian terms their elimination was part of the process of natural selection whereby what was more limited, and therefore by comparison less satisfying to the modern mind, became outmoded in favor of what had been rendered possible through the general advance of mankind. All the historical and psychological contradic tions implied in such a world-view were readily bypassed by a socie ty thinking along these lines; inconvenient evidence was simply brushed aside or else explained away by means of palpably tenden tious arguments. Such was the climate of opinion at the beginning of the present century: if belief in the quasi-inevitable march of progress is nowadays beginning to wear rather thin, this is largely due to the results of two world-wars and to the threats of mass- destruction which progress in the technological field has inevitably brought with it. -

He was poet laureate of Nebraska, literary editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 1929-1938, and an instructor at the University of Missouri, 1949-1965. Neihardt Papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Hilda Neihardt Petri on 11 January 1988 (Accession No. 4824) BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH John Gneisenau Neihardt was born near Sharpsburg, Illinois, on 8 January 1881, third child of Nicholas Nathan Neihardt and Alice Culler Neihardt. In 1886 the family moved to a sod house in northwestern Kansas, moving from there to Kansas City in 1888. In 1891 he moved with his mother and sisters to Wayne, Nebraska, where he attended the Nebraska Normal College (now Wayne State College), graduating with a bachelor of science degree at age 16. His first book, The Divine Enchantment, was finished at the age of 16 and published. After teaching at a country school for two terms, he moved to Bancroft, Nebraska, where he worked with an Indian trader among the Omaha Indians. Later he edited a country weekly, the Bancroft Blade, for several years. After that he devoted his time to writing fiction and lyric verse with rapidly increasing national success.
