Cuando surge la inmediata e irremediable atracción entre ellas, la inocencia de su primer encuentro se atenúa y su conexión se vuelve incontrolable. Mientras Carol se libera de las ligaduras del matrimonio, su esposo (Kyle Chandler) pone en duda su competencia como madre cuando su relación con Therese y su estrecha amistad con su mejor amiga Abby (Sarah Paulson) sale a la luz. SOBRE LA PELÍCULA LA HISTORIA DE CAROL CAROL se enfoca en el período transitorio de la década de 1950 tras el final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Aquella América se caracterizaba por sentimientos tanto de paranoia como de optimismo. La posguerra provocó el surgir de muchas voces del cambio y a sus 28 años de edad, la autora de novelas de crímenes Patricia Highsmith escribía su segunda novela El precio de la sal o Carol, sobre una atracción y un improbable romance entre dos mujeres que viven en Nueva York, Teresa Belivet y Carol Aird. Publicado en 1952, el candor sexual que des- prendían las palabras de Highsmith hizo del libro una de las piezas seminales de la literatura del cambio de era. El escritor nominado al Emmy Phyllis Nagy (“Mrs. Harris”) adaptó el guion de la novela ori- ginal de Highsmith y el director Todd Haynes creó CAROL para el público de hoy. Haynes se sintió impulsado a contar la polémica relación de Teresa y de Carol en una película que cap- tura el clima social que se respiraba en la década de 1950. “CAROL sigue la historia de amor inesperado entre dos mujeres de diferentes edades y en- tornos sociales”, dice Haynes. “Una joven de unos 20 años, Teresa, empieza a saber lo que es la vida, cuando conoce a Carol Aird, una atractiva mujer más mayor que tiene una hija y está sumida en un proceso de divorcio. A medida que se conocen, se van enamorando y co- mienzan a enfrentar los conflictos que su atracción provoca.” Haynes quería trabajar con la imprevisibilidad del amor, ya que tanto Teresa como Carol luchan por comprender los signos y señales que guían sus emociones. La película retrata un momento único en la historia donde la sociedad “seguía un camino prescrito”, afirma Haynes. Carol se da cuenta de cómo se siente insatisfecha en su matrimonio con Harge, un rico banquero. La misma incertidumbre de Carol siente el personaje de Teresa, que está confusa con su devoto novio Richard. Un cambio de paradigma de ambas relaciones rápidamente se abre paso en la trama. “Carol es una historia de amor que representa cómo la verdad es la tónica final. Si eres sincero con lo que sientes y lo que crees, puede que no sucedan cosas buenas, pero te convertirás en una mejor persona”, dijo el escritor Phyllis Nagy. La confusión emocional de los personajes de la película se basa en los mundos convencionales que tanto Carol como Teresa han construido a su alrededor. La productora Elizabeth Karlsen vio una hermosa adaptación en el guion de Nagy: “Cuando se combina con la dirección de Haynes, los roles valientes y audaces de Carol y Teresa subra- yan el sentimiento de los temas de la película. Las muchas facetas del amor evolucionan desde el dolor, ya que los personajes encuentran el coraje de ser quienes quieren ser, pese a pisar un terreno desconocido.” Haynes pinta un hermoso cuadro de un momento particularmente radical en la historia como es la apertura de la sociedad a las emociones y los deseos homosexuales que comenzó a cambiar en la década de 1950. La película da al público una visión realista de los retos y las dificultades de un amor nada ejemplar. La actualidad de la película nos ofrece una perspectiva del camino hacia la verdadera felicidad. LA LEY DE LA ATRACCIÓN Para el papel de la protagonista, Carol Aird, la actriz Cate Blanchett quedó cautivada con el poder emocional de la historia y la intensidad que mostraba para el período en que fue escri- to. Cuando el guion y proyecto llegaron a Haynes, Blanchett ya había aceptado protagonizar el papel. Después de haber trabajado con Blanchett antes en su película inspirada en Bob Dylan, I´m not there, Haynes era capaz de imaginar a la actriz interpretando a la mujer madura y vulnerable, al borde del divorcio y de un cambio importante en su vida. Acostumbrada a representar personajes complejos que luchan con los secretos, Blanchett admite que era una deliciosa oportunidad como actriz. “Creo que lo mejor de poder trabajar una novela de Patri- cia Highsmith es que la vida interior de los personajes es tan rica - es magistral en tratar con personajes que reconocen, en cierto modo, que cada adulto tiene un secreto.” Ya protagoni- zó una adaptación de El talento de Mr. Ripley anteriormente, Blanchett estaba familiarizada con la profundidad del personaje que tenía que mostrar en este nuevo papel. Ella trabajó con Haynes para darle a Carol vida y la exquisita dirección del director y las referencias fotográfi- cas ayudaron a narrar visualmente la historia. Interpretando a Carol en la película, dice Blanchett, “Carol es alguien que quizá parece muy remoto e independiente y dueño de sí mismo, pero en cierto modo creo que está en ruinas. Ella no encaja- ni Carol ni Therese- en un círculo social o en ese momento histórico. Así que creo que las dos están atrapadas en la intensidad de la conexión que comparten. Se torna más importante la otra persona que encajar en un grupo más grande. “Cuando Carol reconoce sus sentimientos por Teresa en la película adquiere esa angustia universal que a menudo viene cuando te enamoras, corre el riesgo de perder el control y es una emoción embriagadora”. Para llevar esta emoción a la pantalla, Blanchett se basa en la diferencia de edad entre los dos personajes femeninos y la mayor amenaza a la que se enfrenta Carol como mujer mayor. “Si esto sale mal, le afectará de una manera diferente a una chica que es mucho más joven que ella”, dice. “Therese es simplemente el producto de su edad y de su propio entorno. Tiene una especie de melancolía, de anhelo… una cierta aprehensión diferente que Therese simple- mente no tiene ni entiende”. El marido de Carol Harge, interpretado por Kyle Chandler, representa lo que está en juego cuando la desafía en una batalla por la custodia de su hija. La realidad de perder a su hija por seguir a su corazón es un importante obstáculo en la situación entre Carol y Therese. “Carol está enamorada de alguien más y tenemos un niño, nuestra familia está a punto de ser des- truida por esta relación lésbica. Pero mi personaje todavía quiere mantener sus sueños de ese pequeño mundo ideal vivos” dice Chandler. Sarah Paulson dice de su personaje: “ella es parte del problema para Harge porque sabe que Abby y Carol tuvieron un lio hace tiempo. Así que, en parte, Harge es capaz de usar eso contra Carol antes de que siquiera sepa lo que realmente está pasando entre su esposa y The- rese.” Paulson continúa:” Mientras Abby aún siente fuertes sentimientos por Carol, ella no le corresponde. A Carol le encanta Abby como su confidente y su mejor amiga, pero no siente lo mismo que mi personaje. Como Carol se enamora de Therese, Abby sólo puede sentarse y ver qué sucede, ya que es lo único que puede hacer”. La relación Carol y de Therese evoluciona hasta convertirse en una historia de amor que no encaja en los años 50, en un momento en que ser lesbiana no estaba culturalmente aceptado. Esto llamo la atención de Mara: “cuando te enamoras, tu mente funciona como la de un crimi- nal. Estas constantemente pensando en diferentes escenarios y diferentes cosas que podrían salir mal o de otra manera”. En contraste con Carol, Mara nos muestra una Therese que nos muestras su soledad en el mundo.
