Gameplay This section needs to be expanded. You can help by adding to it. (June 2016) The plot of the Evil Spell of the queen of Anthea fell on the Kingdom of Gomar. Like a mysterious fog wrapped in the kingdom, the inhabitants turn into vicious creatures. Fearless warrior (Atlus), a female spy (Sayoi) and a powerful wizard (Orion) escaped the fate of their fellow villagers. Now they must search and capture souls to reverse the curse. The development of Soul Fighter was developed by the French company Toka with the help of upstart company Piggyback Interactive. The 15-person team in Toka created the game using the Glide API for PC in the same way as ' San Francisco Rush, NFL Blitz and NBA Showtime. Although Soul Fighter may not be launched from Glide to Dreamcast, the software allowed Toka to port the game from PC to console in less than three weeks. Production on Soul Fighter was originally set to be completed in July 1999 with the game scheduled for release at the North American launch of Dreamcast. The delay put its release back in The October date of the ship. After he settled on the publisher in , Soul Fighter was again postponed from October 1999 until the following month. At one point, Piggyback consulted with a Japanese publisher to turn Soul Fighter into an arcade game; The company was also considering a version for PlayStation 2. The game's planned port for GameCube was announced but eventually canceled. Reception Blake Fisher reviewed the Dreamcast version of the game for the next generation, rating it one star out of five, and stated that it is perhaps the first spinning- world simulator to run on a dizzying 60fps. Now, excuse us, we have to find the toilet and vomit. Soul Fighter received mostly unfavorable reviews, such as IGN's (2.5 Painful), GameSpot's (4.8 casual work, thanks to tedious gameplay and even worse control), and Game Revolution reviews (simplified gameplay and lack of multiplayer mode). Gameplay Wise is very similar to Legend, another game by the same developer that was exclusive to Sony PlayStation. Being an early game developed by a small studio, it is very rough both graphically and on the side of the gameplay. Magazine Articles Main Article: Soul Fighter/Magazine Articles. I also heard that it was like the Golden Axe, which was another plus. Within 10 minutes of playing this game I realized that it was not true. The game suffers at all levels: graphics, sound and playability. I'd say the graphics fall somewhere between the level of the Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast, which while decent is definitely not what they should be at last. The sound is minimal; I think I remember a few sword ringing and some grunts. What's worse than the game's graphics are funny cut scenes that, graphically, look like they belong on the Playstation. But all this aside, even if I was happy with the graphics and sound, gameplay is one thing I wouldn't be able to ignore. The gameplay is not much more than pressing a few buttons repeatedly, and so you run, kick/kick, kick/kick, kick/kick, etc. from time to time you get to pick up an axe or sword and then as if by magic you use it a couple of times and it disappears. Also, often you find yourself rolling back through areas that you've already cleaned just to find some stupid key/object (it happened to me more than a couple of times). And, as you would expect with this kind of game, here come the same few enemies, over and over and over again. There's a lot to like about Soul Fighter, depending on a person's tolerance to the above problems. Despite the flaws, it is possible for a hardworking, patient player to progress through the levels and get eyeful of some great environments and very interesting creatures. On the way there, some of the battles even turn out to be quite interesting. Unfortunately, most of them (and therefore most of the game) won't, and chances are you'll be reaching for one of your more entertaining Dreamcast titles soon after a few rounds of this.
