Article MAST | Vol.2 | No.1 | May 2021 The Journal of Media Art Study and Theory Volume 2, Issue 1, 2021 Total Screen: Why Baudrillard, Once Again? www.mast-journal.org Baudrillard and the Prophetic: Reimagining the Twin Towers in Avengers: Infinity War Loraine Haywood The University of Newcastle, Australia Abstract After 9/11, Jean Baudrillard proclaimed that the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center (the Twin Towers) in New York City, would enter the imaginary space, that: “Even in their pulverized state… No one who knew them can cease imagining them …Their end in material space has borne them off into a definite imaginary space…” (Spirit of Terrorism 36-37). This can now be considered a prophetic statement, not just in the realm of the human memory, a geographical imagination, but in the imaginary spaces of film. The Twin Towers are reimagined and revealed in presence and absence (maps and territories of the Real). They are present and have an origin story in Robert Zemeckis’ resurrection narrative The Walk, where the high-wire walk by Philippe Petite was credited with “giving them a soul.” They are present in their absence in the New York City skyline in Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion. However, it is in Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War that the ruined and ghostly remains of the Twin Towers are reimagined, returning to haunt audiences on the screen, associated with one of the key plot elements, the Soul Stone, and its need for sacrifice. Avengers: Infinity War reimagines the Twin Towers as an architectural marker for the Soul Stone. -

Valda – Gameplay FAQ Territory Control Q: If you control two god area’s: can you take 2 god cards (of the corresponding areas) at the beginning of your game phase or does it stay 1 god card + 1 card from base deck. And what does above mean if you have 2 temples at Freya? A: If you control one god area, you can take 1 god card + 1 card from the base deck. Showing them, depends if you have a temple at Freya are not. If you control two god areas, you can take 1 god card from one domain and the other one from your second area. So no card from base deck in this case. If you have 2 temples at Freya and control two god areas, then you don’t show your cards drawn in the game phase and you take 1 god card from your first domain, a second at your other area and the third card is drawn from the base deck. Q: What happens if you lend a temple with the ‘Infiltration’ card and you can lock a god area? A: If you have a 3rd temple in that area when borrowed, then you lock the area until the end of your turn (as you give back the temple after your turn). You do get a follower for that lockdown. Basic yellow Cards Q: Card Yggdrasil: is this 3x building in your game phase + 2x in the building phase? A: No, when Yggdrasil is played, you’ll get 3 building options instead of 2 in the building phase. -

Norse game of Tablut History “Tafl” are a family of ancient Nordic and Celtic strategy board games played on a checkered or latticed gameboard with two armies of uneven numbers. A king is at the centre of the board, with his small band of loyal defenders, facing a horde of attackers twice their number, who are lined up at the edges ready to attack from all sides. The king must escape from the board, while the attackers must capture him. There are a few versions of Tafl and many variations on the rules. Tablut (this game) is a simpler version with a 9x9 board and fewer pieces. Hnefltafl (also on sale at cheshire.ca) is played on an 11x11 board. Tablut is a unique blend of two kinds of strategy games; “hunt” games, and “war” games. A hunt game is one where the purpose is for one (prey) player to get their piece from one spot on the board to another, while their opponent’s goal is to stop them. On the other hand, war games, like chess, are usually played between two players with equal armies, which create balance & more strategic, compelling play. Tablut gives the prey an army, which can defend & attack, adding a greater level of complexity. Between 400 and 1000 AD, as Viking raiders, adventurers and settlers spread further afield, the game spread to other cultures: the English, Scots, Welsh and Irish all played. Norse traders also took the game east with them to Russia and Ukraine. By the 12th century, the popularity of Tafl games was challenged and overcome by the game of chess in all the lands it had invaded. -

Master’s Thesis Avenging the Anthropocene Green philosophy of heroes and villains in the motion picture tetralogy The Avengers and its applicability in the Swedish EFL-classroom Author: Jens Vang Supervisor: Anne Holm Examiner: Anna Thyberg Date: Spring 2019 Subject: English Level: Advanced Course code: 4ENÄ2E 2 Abstract This essay investigates the ecological values present in antagonists and protagonists in the narrative revolving the Avengers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The analysis concludes that biocentric ideals primarily are embodied by the main antagonist of the film series, whereas the protagonists mainly represent anthropocentric perspectives. Since there is a continuum between these two ideals some variations were found within the characters themselves, but philosophical conflicts related to the environment were also found within the group of the Avengers. Excerpts from the films of the study can thus be used to discuss and highlight complex ecological issues within the EFL-classroom. The unique statuettes of a goddess holding snakes are discovered on Crete (Fig. 1b), which date to c. 1600 BC1. The depiction of Frigg embodies a godmother with her legs wide open to give birth. In Norse mythology Frigg, Frige (Old Norse Frigg), Frea or Frija (Frija – “beloved”) is the wife of Odin. She is the mother of the three gods Baldr, Hodr and Hermodr. a b Fig. 1.
