At a glance 2018/2019 | 1 History

The University of Siegen is a young university. It was founded in 1972 as one of fi ve new comprehensive universities in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and in 2003, the Siegen Comprehensive University was re-named the University of Siegen. But: however brief the history of the university appears to be at fi rst glance, Siegen’s tradition as the site of notable educational institutions extends back into the 16th century. In 1536, William the Rich, the Count of Nassau, delegated to the Saxon educator and theologian Erasmus Sarcerius the reconstitution of the Siegen Latin school, similar to today‘s Gymnasium (university preparatory school). In the years 1595 to 1599 and 1606 to 1609, the “Universa Schola Nassovica Sigenensis,” the “High School” of the state of Nassau, was established within the walls of the city.

Meadow Culture School The “Meadow Culture School,” which was founded in 1853 and known beyond state borders, laid the foundation for the later University of Siegen. After the Second World War, the educational focus shifted in the direction of civil engineering and the school was re-named “State School of Civil Engineering” in 1962. The Department of Mechanical Engineering, in turn, follows the history of the “Technical College for the Iron and Steel Industry” which was founded in 1900.

Thanks to a num- ber of innovative medium-sized companies, the city and the region population about 100,000 occupy a leading position nationally with their labor market data.

But Siegen is not just an industrial location. For 600,000 people in situated on top of eight mountains the region, the city is also a center for retail and service, healthcare, education, culture and recreation.
