The LANDSCAPE TRUST is a charity with over 1100 members who are passionate about the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As this full name is a bit of a mouthful most people abbreviate it to the AONB.

Since 2012, the Landscape Trust has organised an annual festival in September, exploring the landscapes in each of the local villages and parishes. The format is the same each year - free guided walks, short lectures, tours, family events and exhibitions.

2018 – Farleton & Hutton Roof – Welcome from the Festival Organiser

After retiring from a medical career in 2007 I studied geography at Lancaster University and in 2010 became events organiser for the Landscape Trust. In September 2012 I introduced a village weekend festival called ‘Meet the Yealands’ with its hub at Yealand Village Hall. Over the next five years the Yealands model was replicated across the other villages and parishes of the AONB. The number and variety of events on offer at these festivals has grown and the 2017 Story of Silverdale lasted five days.

2012 – Meet the Yealands 2013 – Welcome to Warton 2014 – Story of Storth, Sandside and Carr Bank 2015 – Story of Beetham and Hale 2016 – All about Arnside 2017 – The Story of Silverdale

Meet the Villages has become the flagship event in the Landscape Trust’s annual programme and usually attracts well over 1000 visitors. Everyone is welcome but our target audiences are the residents of each parish and the membership of the Landscape Trust. One of the key platforms of the Trust is learning more about local landscapes.

Organising these festivals is hard work, but Meet the Villages is my favourite event in the calendar. Each festival provides a fascinating opportunity to explore villages and parishes in depth and my reward is that I learn a lot and meet a wide variety of fascinating local experts, many of whom have become good friends. These festivals are run on a shoestring thanks to the generosity of people who donate their time and expertise to give lectures, lead walks, organise tours and help with stewarding. Our organisational motto is for the people by the people.

This year, Meet the Villages goes on sabbatical leave to Farleton Knott and Hutton Roof Crags, and the surrounding villages of Farleton, Holme, Clawthorpe, Burton, Dalton, Hutton Roof and Lupton. This area was originally intended to be part of the Arnside & Silverdale AONB but, rather unwisely, was omitted at a late stage of planning.

This festival would not have been possible without the local knowledge and advice of many residents of the villages around Farleton Knott and Hutton Roof Crags. The hard work and enthusiasm of Kath Hayhurst and Bryan Yorke in Burton and Eve Simpson in Hutton Roof are particularly appreciated.

We are also indebted to Francis Mason-Hornby the owner of Dalton Hall Estate, local farmers and householders for allowing some of our guided walks to cross private land. The helpfulness and great interest in landscapes and the environment shown by these local landowners has been inspirational.

PARTNERS and ALLIED ORGANISATIONS

The local area is a hotbed of ongoing education and the Landscape Trust is by no means the only organisation involved. Beetham Heron Theatre, Silverdale & Arnside Arts and Crafts Trail, Arnside and District Natural History Society, Mourholme Local History Society, Westmorland Geological Society and Holme & District Local History Society all deliver ambitious artistic and educational programmes. There is much overlap of membership between these bodies but we are united by a quest to promote lifelong learning. Other volunteers manage venues such as the Burton Memorial Hall, Hutton Roof Village Hall, Silverdale Gaskell Hall and Arnside Educational Institute and there is a wonderful network of other village halls across the area. Our friends in the National Trust, RSPB, Natural , Cumbria Wildlife Trust and AONB, also enjoy much local volunteer support.

Burton, Holme and Hutton Roof are thriving communities with village websites giving details of local societies. See page 4. Bittern Countryside (BCCIC) This community interest company publishes atlases to AONB natural history. Many are also relevant to the Farleton and Hutton Roof areas. More details from bitterncountrysidecic.org.uk Cumbria GeoConservation (formerly Cumbria RIGS) - This body has registered 290 county locations as regionally important sites of geological and geomorphological importance. Details are available from cumbriarigs.co.uk with free downloads on local geology. Cumbria Wildlife Trust - CWT is one of 47 wildlife trusts in Britain, has 3500 members and owns 44 reserves including Hutton Roof National Nature Reserve. Lancelot Clark Storth reserve is one part of this NNR. Other fine nearby reserves are at Whitbarrow and Foulshaw Moss. Details from cumbriawildlifetrust.org.uk Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain - The national HQ is at Lane Farm, Crooklands, LA7 7NH. Telephone 015395 67953. Office open weekdays. Good stock of publications including a free guide to the splendid exhibition wall on the County Showground. The exhibition wall will not be open during the festival as clearing up the County Show will be in full swing. Free geology downloads are available at dswa.org.uk Geotrails Peter Standing has written a series of richly illustrated and inexpensive landscape walk guides which raise money for local conservation projects. There are guides to Whitbarrow, Beetham, Arnside and Gait Barrows/Trowbarrow and a 40 page guide to Farleton Knott and Hutton Roof Crags will be launched in Hutton Roof at the festival on September 14th 2018. Holme and District Local History Society - This very active society runs a programme of lectures and field trips and holds archive material on the area. More information from localhistory.burtonweb.org.uk Holme & District Photographic Society - This photographic society is a friendly, active camera club that caters for all levels of experience with lectures, members’ evenings and outings throughout the year. www.holmephotosoc.co.uk

Lancaster Canal Trust - Since its formation in 1963, the main objective of the Lancaster Canal Trust has been to restore and reopen to navigation the canal between Tewitfield and Kendal. The Trust also aims to increase awareness and promote interest amongst all users of this historic and beautiful waterway, be they boaters, walkers, cyclists or anglers. More details about membership and the trust’s excellent publications are available from www.lctrust.co.uk

National Trust – The trust has conserved much of Farleton Knott and Holme Park Fell and has nearby reserves at and in Silverdale, where the local office is found (01524 702815). Joining the National Trust helps to fund important conservation work. nationaltrust.org.uk

Natural England - safeguards England’s traditional landscapes and wildlife with National Nature Reserves at Hutton Roof Crags, Gait Barrows and Hawes Water. NNR guides can be downloaded from naturalengland.org.uk

Royal Society for the Protection of Birds This charity owns 200 reserves and has 1.2 million members. Locally it is best known for Leighton Moss but also owns large reserves on Morecambe Bay and at Silverdale Moss. rspb.org.uk

Westmorland County Show - Just 44 years after Bonnie Prince Charlie marched through Farleton, two notable local landowners, Daniel Wilson of Dallam Tower and the Bishop of Llandaff, Richard Watson of Calgarth established a county agricultural show. The show was originally based in Kendal but moved to Crooklands in 1989. It is held annually on the second Thursday in September. This year’s show is on THURSDAY September 13th 2018 - the day before the Farleton and Hutton Roof Festival opens. Details from westmorlandshow.co.uk

Westmorland Geological Society - The WGS holds winter lectures and summer field trips and welcomes visitors and new members. Details from westmorlandgeolsoc.co.uk or visit the WGS stand at the exhibition. 3

HOW TO GET THE BEST OUT OF THE FESTIVAL

BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL FOR ALL GUIDED WALKS, TOURS 2 & 6 (LUPTON MILL) and TOUR 5 (CANAL BOAT TRIP) Briefings for each walk start on page 12 and give information on the length and difficulty of each route and the sorts of things you are likely to see. For educational and health and safety reasons, numbers on most walks are limited to about twenty people. Before booking walks, please read the general health and safety information on page 11.

BOOKING IS RECOMMENDED FOR THE FRIDAY, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY FREE LECTURES  At least half of the seats for village lectures tend to get reserved. But each village is different and the Burton and Hutton Roof lectures are likely to attract plenty of interest.  Having said that there will probably be space at Burton to accommodate most people who turn up on the day.

HOW TO BOOK PLEASE e-mail [email protected] - we sometimes circulate last minute plans or educational briefings by e-mail. Any other queries can also be answered at this address. Bookings are run by volunteer Adrian Walker. It really saves us time if you can supply these FIVE bits of information.

1. The names of EACH person coming 2. Contact telephone numbers 3. Email addresses 4. Whether you are a member of the Landscape Trust 5. Your parish.

Being outside the AONB, the Farleton and Hutton Roof festival poses new organisational challenges. In the past, some walks have quickly become fully booked so we are anxious that local residents should enjoy the same access for bookings as Landscape Trust members. Once booking opens we will initially reserve half the places for Trust members and half for residents of Hutton Roof, Dalton, Burton, Holme and Farleton. This is one reason we need to know which parish you come from. It may sometimes take a few days for you to receive confirmation of your booking especially in early August.

Please let us know ASAP if you need to cancel so we can offer your places to those on the waiting list.

THOSE WITHOUT A COMPUTER may ring our volunteer booking manager Adrian Walker on 01524 762060.

BOOKING IS NOT NECESSARY FOR  Exhibitions – at the Burton Memorial Hall and Hutton Roof Village Hall  Family Events Moths (Sat am), Bats (Sat am) and other family events  Tours – churches in Burton and Hutton Roof and Dalton Woodland Burial Ground.  B4RN Research Workshops – at Hutton Roof Village Hall

Introduction to creative writing Theme getting to know rock Workshop 2 Venue Burton Memorial Hall – small room Time Saturday September 15th 2018 – 1500-1630 Leader David Craig was an inaugural lecturer in the Department of English at Lancaster University in 1964 and spearheaded a very popular creative writing course, which at the time was one of only two in England along with East Anglia. He has lived in Burton for 41 years. His other books include On the Crofter’s Trail, King Cameron and Landmarks. Format The format of this workshop will be flexible to suit the needs of the group. David is hoping that a few people might be brave enough to read a short piece of their own work but this is not compulsory. He will be happy if other folk just listen and learn and unleash their inner writer at a later date. One writing theme David has suggested is ‘Getting to know Rock’ so, in the unlikely event that you have not already walked on Farleton Knott and Hutton Roof Crags, a visit before the workshop visit could offer inspiration. GUIDED WALKS & FIELD TRIPS

These are FREE – but booking is ESSENTIAL

BEFORE BOOKING ANY WALKS PLEASE READ 1. THE HEALTH AND SAFETY ADVICE BELOW 2. THE WALK BRIEFINGS WHICH START ON PAGE 12.

GENERAL HEALTH AND SAFETY GENERAL ADVICE FOR WALKS  Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness who is familiar with the area should not find any of the walks particularly difficult.  For those with limited mobility there are some shorter options.  In general, the risks of these events are extremely small. However, all walking involves some risk and it is important to take note of the following cautions.  Limestone can be slippery especially when wet. Surefootedness on rough ground or rocky terrain is sometimes needed. Muddy paths can also be slippery.  Ticks are quite common in the vegetated areas of Farleton Knott and Hutton Roof Crags. Wearing appropriate clothing to cover arms and legs can reduce but does not eliminate the chances of tick bites. It is best to search for ticks before bedtime and if you sustain a bite to remove the tick within 24 hours. www.lymediseaseaction.org.uk is one of many websites on this topic. Watch the 3 minute video. Free leaflets on preventing and managing tick bites are also available from the AONB office at Arnside Station.  Field leaders will have carried out a more specific risk assessment of the route and will advise you at the start of each walk of any special problems.  Routes may sometimes have to be shortened to accommodate weather conditions or the progress of the group.  Whilst we do our best to minimise risks, the Landscape Trust and its officers and event leaders do not accept responsibility for any loss, injury or inconvenience you may suffer, however caused.
