At Application Dulaney, Mike created their Athletic Hall of Fame, produced a Coach’s Handbook and served on a Baltimore County committee which developed a Pre-Season Parents’ Meeting Power Point. Mike also undertook major facility improvement projects by developing an athletic training room, weight training room, coaches’ office and installing stadium irrigation. Mike Dulaney, CAA In addition to Mike’s contributions at Dulaney, he has contributed to the profession on both the national and state levels. Mike was one of the co-authors of the Leadership Training Course 516, is currently the National Chairperson and taught the course at both the 2003 and 2004 National Conferences. Also, Mike has completed 12 LTC courses and earned his CAA Certification in 2001.

Mike Lafferty has also been very active in the State of Maryland. At the MSADA Conferences, Mike has been both a workshop presenter and presider. Mike also taught LTC 516 at the first annual MSADA Summer Institute in 2004. Currently, Mike Lafferty is the Vice-President of the Maryland State Coaches Association and is a certified NFHS Coaching Principles Course instructor.

In recognition for his accomplishments and contributions to athletics in his school, for the state and throughout the MSADA of the Year, country, Mike Lafferty is the MSADA Athletic Director of the Year for 2005. Mike Lafferty Maryland State Athletic Directors Association President’s Message As hard as it is to believe, the 29th Annual MSADA Conference has come and gone already. This year’s event had a registration of 140 attendees, with 14 walk-ins. While the weather did not bring the sunny, balmy conditions everyone seeks this time of year in Ocean City, the conference itself had plenty of indoor activities to offer. This year’s conference was set up to include more Leadership Training Course offerings and selected workshop sessions that would contribute to the professional development of the attendees. A total of 92 members registered for the LTC’s that were offered. These courses continue to be a very popular activity for most Athletic Directors. With new course options being created all of the time, the experience and knowledge to be gained is limitless.

Our valued vendors allow this annual conference to take place each year. A total of 56 vendors had their materials available and on display on Friday and Saturday. By the looks Lee Dove, CAA of the amount of activity in the vendor hall, it should have been a successful venture for all those involved. Special thanks to Karl Heimbach for his work over the past two years in working with the vendors. Workshop topics were both relevant and informative. Many thanks are extended to the presiders and presenters at each workshop. Your time and efforts were appreciated. Joe Ehrmann’s message will be carried onward by many of us.

On a national note, we were very pleased to have Donna King, CMAA, from Chantilly High School in Chantilly, Virginia. Donna gave a presentation on Title IX and also spoke at the General Business Meeting on behalf of the NIAAA. Donna is the Secretary/Treasurer of that organization. Mike Hart, CAA at Salesianum, and who serves as the Section II Board Representative for the NIAAA, addressed the Executive Council on the news at the national level, and gave insight into the 2006 – 2010 Strategic Plan.

Matt O’Hare had everyone rolling in the aisles at the Conference Banquet. His tremendous sense of humor made the evening fly by. Our honored guests who were recognized by receiving awards on this special night all deserve a well intended round of applause. Congratulations to each of them.

As a professional organization, the MSADA continues to develop and grow. We have a solid membership, from across the state, and many dedicated people who strive to make a difference each and every day, in the lives of young adults. Through efforts such as Professional Sponsorships, participation in national vendor rebate programs, and other personal endeavors, you make this organization what it is. Be proud of your profession, your state organization and of yourself for being involved. Your attendance at the conference demonstrates your dedication to this job we call “athletic administration”. Finally, many thanks to Dr. David Hoch for his leadership as MSADA President over the past two years. Thanks to David’s drive, determination, and focus, and the continued support of Executive Director Carol Satterwhite, CAA, and the Executive Council, the MSADA is in very good shape as we head into the

future.

1st Vice President’s Wrap-Up MSADA Annual Conference 2005

The 29th annual MSADA Conference was held at the Princess Royale Hotel in Ocean City, Maryland from April 21-24 with over 140 attendees. Each year, the conference provides an opportunity for professional development, as well as the chance to catch-up with old friends, and make new contacts in a relaxed setting.

Thursday night allowed individuals the chance to take two LTC classes. One of these classes, LTC 515 was offered for the first time in the State of Maryland. It was great to have Dick Kemper, President of the Virginia Athletic Directors Association, instruct LTC 515 as the Karl Heimbach MSADA continues to develop close ties with our fellow Section 2 member states. CMAA Friday started with the annual golf outing, which included four groups sponsoring a hole. We hope to expand this program next year so that more vendors, individuals, and schools may elect to sponsor a hole for the low price of $50. Additional professional growth was available with the offering of two more additional LTC classes. The afternoon allowed the opportunity to visit 57 vendors and listen to two different workshops on warm-up and sports overload. Jim Tapley of Northwest High School was selected 2nd vice-president and Donna King, NIAAA secretary/treasurer discussed issues involving the NIAAA at the General Session. 2 Maryland State Athletic Directors Association Saturday had three individuals take the CAA exam while others elected to take LTC 525 or attend three different workshops. Workshop topics included a round-table look at middle school sports, character building, and Title IX issues. John Pilabin spoke at the banquet on strength training and his involvement as a coach of the national bobsled team.

The conference ended with a breakfast on Sunday and the Executive Council Meeting afterwards. Putting on such a large event requires the help of many individuals and their efforts are greatly appreciated. One of the big efforts for the upcoming year is to attract vendors for the new Gold, Silver, and Bronze level sponsorship. We had two companies, AWA and Crown Trophies, take part this year and we hope to attract more sponsors next year as the

MSADA works to build a strong financial base for the future.
