Arrupe 2018-2019 Jesuit High School Annual Report

the school that works in ! LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friend,

Today our prime educational objective must be to form men-and-women-for-others; men and women who will live not for themselves but for God and his Christ - for the God-man who lived and died for all the world; men and women who cannot even conceive of love of God which does not include love for the least of their neighbors; men and women completely convinced that love of God which does not issue in justice for others is a farce. -Fr. Pedro Arrupe, 1973

More than 40 years ago, Fr. Arrupe challenged Jesuit schools to be greater, to broaden our definition of success and commit to serving others. It is, of course, a bold challenge, one that demands we extend ourselves in partnership with those who seek greater opportunity.

It is a challenge we are called to answer every day on Utica Street. So, as I reflect on the 2018-2019 academic year, I wondered what Fr. Arrupe might think of our efforts.

I suggest that Fr. Arrupe would celebrate the community we have formed at the school named in his honor. He would recognize our students as those who might easily be overlooked by others and know that they are thriving here. Here, they pursue the hope of college; here, they deepen their faith through the sacraments; and here, they encounter different versions of their future. Here, they come to know our God who loves them with abundance.

I know too that he would be grateful for you, our faithful partners, whose hearts are captured by the mission of Arrupe Jesuit and the promise of our extraordinary students. You too are convinced that our love of God must issue in service for others. That commitment brings you to our doors, and that commitment allows us to serve our students in the ways Fr. Arrupe so passionately describes.

Thank you for joining us in this blessed mission. You are in my prayers throughout the year.

With gratitude,

Michael J. O’Hagan

To ensure the successful recruitment of students and families to Arrupe Jesuit during Admissions events, current Arrupe Jesuit students volunteer as “Admissions Hosts.” In 2018- 2019, over 150 AJHS students participated! Two students reflect on why they chose to attend Arrupe Jesuit and the joy they find in being Admissions Hosts:

“I chose to attend Arrupe Jesuit because both of my brothers graduated from here, and seeing the opportunities and experiences they had helped me make my decision to attend Arrupe. It is also very important to my family and I to attend a Catholic school and Arrupe was always my first choice for that.

I find joy in being an Admissions Host because it gives me an opportunity to show 8th graders what Arrupe Jesuit has to offer. When they’re making their final decision on which high school to attend, they can look back and remember their experience shadowing with me.” — Miranda, Sophomore

“I chose to attend Arrupe Jesuit because when I shadowed, I felt like I was somehow connected with the other students. They had similar experiences and backgrounds as me. This school had a family feel to it and the teachers really cared when I was there.

I find joy in helping 8th graders make a big decision that will impact them for the next four years. I was in their shoes and I know how the pressure feels to make a choice that will impact your life. It gives me joy to represent what the Arrupe community is all about and to show them how it positively impacts your life.”

— Fernando, Sophomore Your gifts continue to support students along their educational journey as they break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their families. Thank you for believing in their future!

Class of 2016 graduate, Juno Padilla, is set to graduate from Colorado School of Mines in May 2020. In between his busy schedule of classes, we had the opportunity to catch up with Juno to hear about his experience and plans after graduation.

“I am trudging through my last couple semesters at Colorado School of Mines in pursuit of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. With that said, I have been looking and applying to various companies to begin my career. I have also applied to the Peace Corps in hopes of utilizing the skills I have developed in support of a community abroad.

In conjunction with my engineering classes, I am interning at Plexus Corp. This is a product development company and I have been in charge of developing design concepts for various projects. As part of my contemplation over these last four years, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities presented to me.

I look forward to overcoming many sleepless nights and making my family proud. For everyone who has helped me along the way, I am appreciative of your support. Thank you for forever changing the trajectory of my family.” FISCAL YEAR 2020 – LOOKING AHEAD

“A good plan well executed beats an excellent plan poorly executed, every time. ” This is the philosophy of Dave Mead, of Mead Consulting and Arrupe’s CWSP Board of Trustees, and is one of the many reasons Arrupe Jesuit is grateful to Dave for leading our Strategic Planning process during the 2019-2020 academic year.

With 16 years of student formation and a few capital campaigns under our belt, the time has come to cast the vision for the next five to ten years at Arrupe Jesuit. The strategic planning process will establish a 10-year vision, after considering key trends, influences, and risks that may impact Arrupe Jesuit in coming years, both positive and negative. This dialog will lead to the development of a five-year strategic plan with detailed focus on three years of activity.

We look forward to sharing this vision with you next summer and partnering together for the next chapter of Arrupe Jesuit. Through your generous giving, your hiring of students, your volunteerism, and all of your many investments, our students are offered the opportunity to make their dreams realities. Thank you.
