www.MontaukLife.com JULY 2019 | 15 SUMMER FILM THE BIG PICTURE SHOW nce upon a time there was a classic drive-in movie in Bridgehampton. Now the King Kullen parking lot back then we’d load the car up and Ospend the evening watching old sci-fi and monster films till the sun came up. Long gone you can catch a glimpse of that experience at a number of local venues. OUTDOOR CLASSICS Ever since Steven Spielberg unleashed “Jaws” on an unsuspecting audience 44 years summer block-busters have become a staple on the big screen. Continu- ing that tradition the SOUTHAMPTON ARTS CENTER 631-283-0967 presents some of the biggest hits of those glorious seasons past. Presented on their great lawn it starts July 5 with the original STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE. On July 12 go along for the sweet adventures of FINDING NEMO. The following Friday July 19 it’s the classic SINGING IN THE RAIN. Round out the month with the terrifying GET OUT on July 26. All films are free, shown on their outdoor screen on the Job’s Lane lawn at 7PM. If it rains you’ll be watching them inside the museum. Another active outdoor venue is Bridgehampton’s MARDERS NURSERY 631- 537-3700. Better known as one of the largest and best respected nurseries in the area they also schedule a summer series of free classics on their iconic Hay Wall. Although the titles are not yet available screenings are scheduled for Fridays from July 12 through Labor Day weekend. With past picks from Hitchcock, Truffaut, Scorsese, and Coppolla you can expect another summer of thought provoking movies. Be sure to call them or go to www.marders.com for all times and titles. LAUGH OUT LOUD They’ll be rolling in the aisles this summer when the almost ready for prime- time SAG HARBOR CINEMA ART CENTER shows its first summer film comedy series. Shown at the local Pierson High School this collection of all-time favorites was curated by legendary writer/producer John Landis (“Animal House”, “Trading Places”, “The Blues Brothers”). It follows the chronological development of film comedy from it’s earliest days and kicks off with stars who set the bar high for all cinematic comedians to follow. On June 9 Laurel and Hardy star in the side-split- ting SONS OF THE DESERT. On June 23 the incomparable W. C. Fields cracks wise in IT’S A GIFT. On June 30 the immortal Irene Dunne and Cary Grant star in the classic, Oscar nominated, screw-ball comedy THE AWFUL TRUTH. On July 7 be sure to see Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in one of the all-time greats, HIS GIRL FRIDAY. Moving into the modern age what better way than roll- ing in the aisles with the original, Mel Brooks masterpiece, THE PRODUCERS on July 21. August sees a schedule that includes A NEW LEAF, TRADING PLACES, SOAPDISH, BORAT and finally the hilarious BRIDESMAIDS. SUMMER DOCS On a far more somber note this is the 11th anniversary of the HAMPTON FILM FESTIVALS SUMMER DOC series. Held at East Hampton’s GUILD HALL 631- 324-4050 and hosted by man-about-town and pretty darned good actor if we all say so, Alec Baldwin we have two choice selections this summer to savor. On July 20 COLD CASE HAMMARSKJOLD follows Danish filmmaker, journal- ist and provocateur Mads Brugger as he digs into the still unsolved plane crash of then Sec. General of the UN Dag Hammarskjold fifty years ago. A fascinating journal down the rabbit hole of history Brugger’s signature method of becoming the story itself is almost as enlightening as his grasp at solutions to an accident with an increasingly less firm grip on reality. On August 24 CIRCUS OF BOOKS takes us behind the scenes of the famous LA bookshop of that same name. A landmark for the emerging LBGT community there it‘s signature stock and trade was hard-core gay porn. The ironic twist? It was owned by a straight couple who looked to disseminate those often thought of as shocking images throughout the States. Both movies will be followed by a Q&A with the principles hosted by Mr. Bald- win and David Nugent, the Exec. Director of the HIFF. Tickets are $25 and will go fast, so call today! Last and geographically most east, this year the first ever MONTAUK FILM FESTIVAL will be held July 25-28. Outdoor screening will happen at Teddy Roo- sevelt Park with a schedule of short and feature length pieces that highlight envi- ronmental, social and cultural challenges facing us all. hen the urge comes over you to see open spaces best you head due east. W Montauk is roughly 2/3 preserved park- land with opportunities to hike, bike and explore subject only to the proper permits and seasonal fees. Here’s a few spots to start your exploring. MONTAUK POINT STATE PARK The 724 acres at the very tip of the Montauk Peninsula contains both the venerable Montauk Lighthouse as well as an impressive system of trails, fresh water ponds, and miles of rocky beaches. The Lighthouse itself is one of our favorite attrac- tions, its extensive collection of exhibits and pho- tographs open daily 10AM-4:30PM. Admission is $12 for adults $8 seniors $5 kids with parking only $8. While there be sure to check-out the expanded gift shop for a memento to bring back to the folks. For more information call them at 631-668-2544. HITHER HILLS STATE PARK The largest State park in Montauk, this 1755 acre site stretches from ocean to bay, and offers the most extensive recreational facilities of all Mon- tauk parks. Central to that is the oceanfront fields for RV’s, campers and tents, with playgrounds, a ball field, 10 acre scenic picnic area with fireplaces, horseshoe courts, volleyball, extensive bridle and hiking paths. One of New York State’s most popu- lar camp grounds you will find most prime slots from June on are already taken. Call 631-668- 2554 or www.newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica. com for any remaining dates. Area visitors are in- vited to use their pristine ocean beach daily with a $10 parking fee, or buy a seasonal permit to fish the beach proper or the 40 acre fresh water pond just north of the main grounds in Hither Woods. THEODORE ROOSEVELT COUNTY PARK In 1898, Theodore Roosevelt used Third House as his HQ while he and his Rough Riders were quar- antined in Montauk following the end of the Span- ish-American War. That unique slice of Americana is preserved here in all its red-white-and blue glory. If you’d like to tour the park like Teddy did you can always book a trail ride with the on-site folks at DEEP HOLLOW RANCH 631-668-2744. They offer daily guided rides for beginners and experts alike through the still pristine park. Kids of all ages can also take advantage of the many nature out- ings and mini-camps scheduled here. RV’ers take note, the bay front stretch along the Park’s northern edge is a great place to camp. Call 631-852-7879 for details on fees and availabilities. CAMP HERO STATE PARK This is the remains of one of the largest military installations in Montauk and the site of the popular if rather misguided conspiracy theories known as the “Montauk Project”. 50 years ago a thriving Air Force radar station that monitored Cold War activ- ity along the Eastern shore it is now a deserted vil- lage of old barracks and mess halls overseen by a dilapidated radar tower. The 400 plus acres are also the site of a number of spectacular walking trails that offer wonderful views and vistas of the woods and sea. Also offers access to one of the most pop- ular surf casting beaches and surfing spots. Sea- sonal permits are $40 while daily parking is $8. For more information call 631-668-3781. n

44 | JULY 2019 www.MontaukLife.com By Stu Foley RIDE THE WILD SURF
SURF CAMP 2019 As someone who grew up on and in the water it’s hard for me to imagine a life without surfing. I may not get to do it as often I’d like, running a shop and rais- ing a family does take priority, but when I hit the water the day-to-day grind eases and a profound sense of freedom comes over me. It is a gift. Living here by the ocean, being physically able to surf, it is not something everyone is fortunate enough to enjoy. That’s one reason I love my annual surf camp. For the past 18 years I’ve had the fun of watching little kids take their first steps into surfing. And for many, learning a sport they will enjoy the rest of their life. Some are natu- ral born surfers, others struggle, but almost every stu- dent who has crossed our path learns the fundamentals of this challenging sport, paving the way for their entry into the line-up. To do that they need to learn how to read the water, to know how a wave has to be approached. How to pad- dle out and take their position. Then launch themselves into the wave and at just the right moment, pop-up, find their center and ride that watery beast to shore. Over the course of three sessions my crack staff shows each camper the step-by-step progression that makes all that possible. It is a joy to watch, as much as for me and the staff as the many parents who have been on hand to ap- plaud their kid’s slide down that first blue slope. Our 2019 camp starts July 8 with six week’s session through August 16. Each session is a three day event, Mondays, Wednesday and Friday from 8-11AM. We meet at Ditch Plains and move just far enough down the beach for privacy. There we also have fun with boogie boarding, skim boarding and a good round of beach football. Classes are open for boys and girls 7 and up. The cost is $450 and includes a surfboard and rash guard. Since the water can still be a bit chill for little grommets a wet suit is recommended. We’ll provide some light snacks and drinks, it’s be a good idea for you to add a beach towel and sun screen. Class size is small so each camp- er gets plenty of individual attention. The downside is classes fill fast, so if you want a slot in the very best surf camp on the East End, better call pronto. Dockage RIDE THAT LOG Largest Darenberg’s Available Teaching someone to surf requires patience, skill and for the 2019 Season the right equipment. Both are classic long board designs and come in 7, 8 and 9’ lengths. The Log is set-up with three fins while the Plank is pure old-school, single fin style. Want to hang ten like it’s 1967 again?
