BA Architecture Stage 1 Drawing equipment

Tools to produce technical drawings by hand

DRAFTING BOARD WITH T SQUARE AND DRAWING . AUTHOR: SWTPC6800 MICHAEL HOLLEY, 2016 WIKIMEDIA COMMONS The following equipment will form the core of a drawing toolset that will allow you to create architectural drawings by hand. Additionally most of these implements will be used to mark-up materials for model making and will also have application when it comes to surveying. But don’t ever use them for cutting as most are made of soft plastic and you will ruin them for drawing if you run a metal blade along their edges.

T Square – this helps you to draw parallel lines and acts as a base for using the set square.

The main image above illustrates how to use this to best effect.

Adjustable Set Square – should make it possible for you to draw lines at any angle. You shouldn’t require a protractor.

30 and 60 cm Acrylic Rulers

Compass – for drawing larger circles.

Look for a compass that can hold leads of various thicknesses directly and that has a universal holder so you can also attach a or pen.

Metric Scale Rule – must include the following scales 1:20, 1:50, 1:100.

You will be able to find one (triangular) rule with all these scales on it.

French Curves

These guides allow you to draw precise curved lines that are not parts of a circle.

Circle Templates – to draw accurate circles at small sizes.

Don’t bother buying ‘architectural’ templates of objects or people. They are too specific and usually out-of-date.

5m (minimum) Tape Measure

To be used to measure spaces and objects prior to drawing them.

Mechanical – pencils with 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7 lead thicknesses

You need to buy a pencil for each thickness of lead. You will also need to have a supply of lead refills. Use hard leads such as 2H and draw lightly.

Eraser

A plastic eraser is best.

Technical Pens – can be fibre tipped. Pens with 0.05, 0.2, 0.5, 0.7 thicknesses.

When drawing with these hold them as close to vertical as possible and don’t press down hard or you will distort the nibs.

Although his guide is primarily concerned with marking up materials for model making it is still a very good guide as to how to use most of the tools above. https://davidneat.wordpress.com/2014/01/31/tools-for-measuring-and-marking- out/
