A shared path intended to connect the com- plan munity with nature will be invasive for the people who live there, residents say. The Te Whau Pathway is a 12-kilometre shared path for both pedestrians and cyclists. It would extend from Green Bay to Te Atatu Peninsula on the western edge of the creep Whau River. Cliff Corcoran said the original plan was to have a 2-metre flat path going through the mangroves, but that concept had changed ‘‘quite a bit’’. He said the walkway would now be raised, and 4-metres wide - making it ‘‘intrusive’’. Down the road from Corcoran, Robert Kiddie was concerned about security, priv- acy and how the path would impact the ‘‘ecologically sensitive’’ area with mangroves. ‘‘We would be sitting in here [living room] and looking straight out onto the walkway,’’ Robert Kiddie said. He and his wife, Gloria Kiddie, have lived on the street for 27 years. They say the path’s lights will shine straight into their bedroom. Continued on page 3 ...

The Whau Local Board is pulling the plug on a night market because of dwindling numbers. On June 29, the New Lynn Night Market in west Auckland will wrap up for good after four years. Whau Local Board chairwoman Tracy Mulholland said the weekly Thursday night event had received $75,000 since 2014, and it was time to allocate the funds to other community activities. The board’s investment had covered appropriate certifications for stallholders, traffic manage- ment and a market co-ordinator who worked 20 hours a week, she said. An additional $15,000 per year was spent to make the event waste-free in partnership with Ecomatters Environment Trust. ‘‘It’s easy to think it’s a new board, a new term and a new chair and they are taking away something from the community, but it’s not like that,’’ Mulholland said. Local events needed to reflect the community demographic and the New Lynn Night Market was no longer doing that, she said.
