A Grade II Listed split-level DETACHED BUNGALOW on the fringe of Little Switzerland, converted from a former garage and outbuildings within the grounds of beautiful Gledhow Hall. The land and original hall were owned by Elizabeth I, with the latest incarnation of the hall dating back to the 1700’s and the outbuildings from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s when the motor car began to replace the horse and carriage. The Listing highlights the coursed, squared, gritstone and ashlar elevations, and especially the ornate iron-framed glazed canopy at the front supported on cast-iron columns with ornate scrolled brackets. This is a unique opportunity to purchase a piece of the history of this hall. The property was modernised in the 1990’s to offer a contemporary lifestyle with a large through reception hall, a split-level lounge and dining room with high ceilings and a double-aspect fireplace between the two, a breakfast kitchen, three double bedrooms and three bathrooms, two of which are en suite. Situated close to excellent schools with handy shops a few minutes away and bus routes into Leeds and beyond, the location is within easy reach of Park, the retail facilities at Oakwood Parade and the pleasant walks of Little Switzerland and Gledhow Woods are literally two or three minutes away. HISTORY Built on monastic land, the original (and probably modest) Gledhow Hall reverted to the Crown on the dissolution of Kirkstall Abbey in 1539. In 1601 the estate was purchased from Elizabeth I by the Thwaites family. Upon the death of Alderman John Thwaites, his son-in-law Edward Waddington inherited the estate. It changed hands several times after that until 1764 when it was acquired by Jeremiah Dixon, a very successful cloth merchant. Dixon commissioned John Carr to remodel the hall and construct the outbuildings which were coach and carriage houses and servants’ quarters. Subsequently the hall and its extensive grounds fell into the ownership of several famous families including the Becketts, the Benyons and the Coopers. At one time the house boasted various saloons, drawings rooms and morning rooms along with 11 bedrooms and dressing rooms, bathrooms, 12 attics, cellars and outbuildings along with the stables. In the late 1800’s Sheriff’s Lodge was built to house the motor cars that were taking over from the horse and carriage. By 1900 the property was in the ownership of James Kitson (later Baron Airedale) who was the Lord Mayor of Leeds in 1896 when Queen Victoria designated Leeds as a City as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. During the First World War the Kitsons allowed the hall to be used as a hospital. As a family home, the house has entertained numerous dignitaries and Royals over the years, including an ancestor of Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge. Gledhow Hall is now split into apartments, owned and managed by a private investment company.
