' '-Q Tltis rCturn is very incomplete, ns n.bont sixteen owners of machines hnvc failed to furnish the Registrar~ at Sandhurst :With the,-:par-ticul~rs of their respective crushings. If they had done so, it is estimated that tl1e totals would have amounted to about 70,000 tons crushed for a yield of about 43,000 ozs. of gold. . NoTE.-This Summary does not show tl1e total quantities of quartz,&c.,·crushcdor operated on, but only the yield oi certain crushings, &c., respecting which the Mining Surveyors and Registrars have been able to obtain information. Owing to the circumstance that many of the machine owners are unable to give, or are precluded from giving, information. it is impossible to get con1plete returns from every district; and in considering the relative in,lportance of each district, as regards quartz mining, &c., tllc tAbles relating to machinery should be exn.mined and compared.

MINING SURVEYORS .. AND--. REGISTRARS' REPORTS.

BALLAI{AT MINING DISTR'ICT. ,.

. ' CENTRAL DIVISION. Mr. David Ckristy, Mining Registra?'. I have the honor to report that a falling off has taken place in the returns during the quarter, owing to the large amount of dead work that had to be prosecuted by several of the leading companies engaged in sinking and driving at their lower levels, preparatory to opening up new ground. This week, however, ~prk has pe~n of a pro- gressive nature. · The yield has been 25,169 ozs. 13 dwts. 6 grs. from 66,556 ~ons (quar.tz lllld pyrites). A. considerable amount of interest has been evinced by speculators and others towards the locality north and south of the Black Hill; and a number of new claims have been takt~n up for a distai!ce of two miles in length, consequent upon the rich stone now being raised by the Black Hill, Queen, and adjacent companies.. .. . } · · · , · The Old Endeavour Company, Specimen Gully, has been reorganized, and.!:\ powerful plant purchased by them for their new shaft, in order to work the numerous eastern reefs known to traverse the ground. The Post Office Mining Company, Golden Point, has completed the erection of a substantial mining and pumping plant, which will soon test, at lower levels, the rich veins so profitably worked several years ago. The tributers, since opening out at the shallow levels, have bee:q. handsomely rewarded, the stone averaging nearly 1 oz. to the ton. · 'rhe Collis Washington Company, on the Township Reef, is-now crushing from ,fiat veins at the 150-foot level, with favorable results-95 tons yielding 58 ozs; A. large reef, five feet wide, was struck at a depth of 250 feet, which will be tested during the current quarter. · · · · ·: ' , The- adjoining claim, M!J.rshall's Freehold Company, has been opened·out from ~he 300-foot level, and that company is sanguine of striking the same lode, a large .body of water having been met with in the· face, which is supposed to be in close proximity to.the reef. The Wendouree Company, Ballarat North, has struck a reef five ,feet in thickness, showing gold freely, and containing large quantities of galena, iron pyrites, &c. . ' · The Reporter Company, the ·adjoining claim north, has opened a chamber to cut the reef, having sunk. their shaft to a depth of 375 feet, passing through several lea~ers dippil'\g west, ea·ch gold-bearing, and varying in width fi:om six inches to two feet.. . . · · · · : · . The Old Kohinoor Company, situated further south,' is making exce!leut prqg~ess whh thei.:J: pew shaft, and is s' for the continuation of the Don or Prince of Wales reef. . . , e St. George and Band Company, at Sebastopol, has sunk their shaft to a depth of 456 feet, and is now opening the north side of the shaft at 450 feet for a chamber.· It is proposed to drive for the purpose of intersecting the New Koh-i-noor lode· to the west, and the Band· and Albion Consols to the east. :> •· , , . . The prospects in this branch of mining are altogether very encouraging, and augur .well for the future. In alluvial mining, I have nothing important t~ co~municate respecting the rich reef-washes in the neighbor hood of the Malakoff' ~nd Milkm~id loads, 'Yhich oause~ such excite~eut_la~ year, but ,have now .nearlr, collaps~. The old ground at L1ttle BendJ.go, Canadian, and SIDlor's Gully IS prmmpally worked by···co-operative parties, fossickers, and Chinese. · The quantit~ of water sold for mining purposes. during the _quarter W\1-~ 1~0,577,000, at the ~te of 1s. per 1,000 gallons for bmler purposes, and 3d. per 1,000 gallons, for crushmg, sluicing, 1 &c. · ... ,.,. QUARTZ MINING. The returns ~or. the _qu~rter sho:w a decrease, both in the q~antity of stone crushed and in the total yield of g~ld therefrom. This IS prmctpally owmg to the stoj>page of the Nil Desperandum and the New Kangaroo Companies' mme~, through .the sudden and unexpected falling off in the yield of gold. The former company will shortly hold a meet1~g to deCide upo~ future operations; but the latter company have decided to wind up their affairs, and are r:movmg t_he plant, wh10h is much to. be regretted, as the mine was the most promising in the district, and compara tively untr1ed. By the stoppage of this company, about thirty-five men were thrown out of work, most of whom had to seek employment elsewhere. Stafforshire Reef.-The Little Ilopewell Company's Tributers No. 1 have been engaged during the last six weeks of the quarter in sinking and cross-cutting, and have struck the lode, showing good gold at the depth of 202 feet. The 'rr1buters No. 2 have sunk a shaft to a depth of 123 feet, and are now cross-cutting, expecting to strike the lode in about a week. . The Speedwell Tribute Company are. making wages. . . . Three new claims to the north of the Little Hope well Company's claim have been registered, but, as yet,· very little work has been done upon them. Kangaroo.-The Williams' Fancy Tributcrs are getting better vields. 'l'he last crushing gave them £5 4s. per man for the fortnight, and the next is expected to be much better. •

ALLUVIAL, Nothing worthy of special mention, that I am aware of, has occurred in this branch of mining. No water sold in this division.

BUNINYONG DIVISION. Mr. Robt.'M. Harvey, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

QuARTz MINING. . Th~ total yield from quartz during .the past·quarter is slightly. less th~'that for the previous one, owing to the very poor returns from the One and All Company's mine, where . the works have chiefly been confined to opening up the mine. The mines on the Hard Hills yield well, and a great number of claims have been taken up. Considerable wor]{ is being done, and some of them will, I expect, soon b~ in gold. The water below a depth of 120 feet is heavy, and can scarcely be overcome without steam machinery. The Imperial Company have proved their western lode to be gold-bearing and eight feet thick, at 400 feet deep. Immense· bodies of stone .arc worked jn 'this mine, as much as 45 feet in thickness, and I believe this lode will be found to traverse the district. This company are about to erect twelve additional stamp-heads. Quartz mining in the Buninyong division·is decidedly prosperous, and likely to improve. ·

' ' ' ALLUVIAL. ' • The returns arc small, several parties having registered their claims for want of water. No new discoveries have been·made. · LIGNITB. Very little raised during the quarter. IRoN. The blast furnace at Lal Lal is now at work. WATER. Very little available during the quarter, owing to the.Government reservoir being much silted up.

SMYTHESDALE DIVISION. Mr. John Lynch, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. The yield for the quarter from all sources is 6,572 ozs., being less than that for any like period during the last quarter of a century. Of the above, Haddon has produced 4,551 ozs,, leaving only 2,021 ozs. as .the contribution of the other portions of the district. What gives. this falling off an unpleasant significance is the probability ofits continuance, and· of there being little hope of a resuscitation, even for a short period, of the prosperity of the past. The Haddon portion of the district is as productive as ever, and likely to continue so for a long time; but, as regards the several other localities, I must say that their present condition is cheerless enough, and their future prospects more so. There have been no new discoveries during the quarter, and of the claims in actual operation, some arc suffering from diminished returns, whilst others are approaching extinction. The N cw Golden Belt Company, at Springdallah, after having opened out at a depth supposed to be sufficient to command the working of the gutter, found that they were too shallow, and had to sink the shaft deeper. This unexpected depth is considered a goo.d omen, indicating, as it does, the proximity of very deep ground, and probably of some new leads. Should this expectation be realized, a large reach of unworked country may be laid open to future operations; but if, on the other hand, it should ,Prove fruitless or abortive, there will probably be an end to mining enterprise in this part of the country for an mdefinite period. At Carngham, there are two or three parties engaged in getting machinery_ for quartz mining, and these may be said to comprise the full force of our operations in that branch. of mining. Smce the late rains, surface sluicing has recommenced. The yields rrom the Haddon mines are :-Reform, 2,233 ozs.; Racecourse, 1,470 ozs.; Trunk Lead, 848 ozs. '

CRESWICK DIVISION. Mr. James Stevenson, junior, Mining Registrar. . . . I have the honor to report that in this division there is a decrease in the yield of gold from quartz crushed during the quarter of about 3,000 ozs.; and also a decrease in the average yield of over 10 grs. per ton. The yield of alluvial gold has increased about 2,000 ozs. The Madame Berry Company has been added to ~he list of gold-:producing and dividend-paying claims. There has also been a good deal of work done in progress1ve 25

The quantity of water used during the quarter was 98,558,000 gallons, at 1~d. per 1,000 gallons.

GORDON SUBDIVISION. lflr. Thomas Cmoan, Mining Surveyor and Regist1·ar. Black Horse United Company, Egerton.-During the past quarter, work has been carried on between the Nos. 1 and 9levels, but without discovering anything new or worthy of note. A winze was lately started in the No. 9 level towards the south boundary, to test the stone under that level; it is now down 30 feet. So far, the water has been kept down by buckets. Operations at the mine have been retarded for weeks on account of the scarcity of water, and a considerable number of the miners discharged. The company had also to cease crushing stone for the Egerton Company, which is undoubtedly a great loss to both companies. The Black Horse Company however hope, now the wet season is approaching, that crushing for the Egerton Company will shortly be resumed. During the quarter, 4,687 tons of stone have been crushed, yielding 980 ozs. 2 dwts. 18 grs. of gold, or an average 9f 4 dwts. 4'38 grs. per ton. The number of men employed is 90, and a dividend of ls. per share, equal to £500, has been recently declared. The Egerton Company, Limited, Egerton.-During the quarter this company have been raising stone of a payable quality from a depth of from 400 to 920 feet. 9,240 tons of stone were crushed, yielding 3,580 ozs. 19 dwts. 22 grs. of gold, or an average of 7 dwts. 18·02 grs. per ton. The number of men employed was 234, and dividends amounting to 5s. 6d. per share, equal to £6,875, have been paid during the quarter. .Egerton.-'rho Discovery Company have been carrying on progressive works in sinking and driving. A lode three feet in thickness has been discovered, but the value of the stone is not known, as no trial crushing has yet been made. EleYen men are employed. • No prospecting has been carried on at No. 2·Black Horse Company during the quarter. No work has been done on tht> leases recently taken up to the east of Egerton. Twominersarestill prospecting. on private property, but although a few small leaders have occasionally been met with, no lode of any importance has yet been discovered. · Twenty-three Chinese are still washing the tailings from the Egerton and Black Horse companies' batteries, and, as I have been informed, have obtained about 70 ozs. of gold. The Parker's United Company, Gordon.-This company have been continuing to raise stone from the lode mentioned in my last quarterly report, above the 550-foot level, and have driven over 300 feet in length upon it. At the lower level prospecting operations have been carried on, but as yet no discovery has been made. 1,950 tons of stone have been crushed during the quarter, which yielded 1,490 ozs. of gold, or an average of 15 dwts. 6·77 grs. per ton. The number of men employed was 120, and dividends to the value of 2s. per share, equal to £2,000, have been paid. 94 ozs. of gold have been obtained from treating· sand. 'rhe erection of the engine and 15 head of stamps, mentioned in my last report, has not yet been completed. Gordon.-The North Parker's Company have been contintling to sink a shaft, which is now down 210 feet. Nine men are employed. · . The Parker's No. 2 Company have been carrying on prospecting operations during the quarter, but as yet no reef has been discovered. The number of men employed is 13. Prospecting operati?ns have been carried on during the quarter by the Parker's Company, Parker's Freehold Company, and the Parker s Extended Company, but as yet no quartz lodes have been discovered. The Parker's Company employ 12 men; the Parker's Freehold Company, 6 men; and the Parker's Extended Company, 9 men . . The Parker's United Miners' Company, Moorabool W est.-'l'his company are still engaged in prospecting their mine at a depth of 150 feet. A strong body of stone has been met with, a trial crushing from which has been made, but I have been unable to obtain full particulars as to the value of the stone. Fifteen men are employed. Four Chinese are still washing the tailings from the Parker's United Company's battery. The tailings would appear to be exceedingly poor, as it is stated only 7 ozs. of gold have been.obtained during the quarter.

ALLUVIAL MINING. No alluvial mining has been carried on during the quarter. Lal La! Iron Works, J,al Lal.-The works mentioned in my last quarterly report were completed on 26th .March 1881, and the company is now in full work. Seventy men are employed. . State Forest Company, Korweinguboora.-'l'his company have been carrying on progressive works in sinking and driving. A lode averaging 8 inches in thickness has been discovered, but the value of the stone is not known, as no trial cmshing has yet been made. Seven men are employed. The information with regard to the amount of gold purchased was obtained from the managers of the Uuion Bank, Ballarat, and the London Chartered Bank, Gordon.

STEIGLITZ SUBDIVISION. Mr. D. Jfurphy, Jlining Registrar. . Mining has fallen away considerably during the last quarter in every portion of the district. During the suimner months a great number of the farmers and others along the M oorabool River have been digging in its bed; but the yields which they obtained did not pay them wages. Stciglitz is very dull ; but the inhabitants have hopes that the :Britannia Company, which is prospecting very attentively, will do some good. . 'l'he Cleary's Freehold Company, at Elaine, have struck a very nice "north and south vein," at the depth of Sl38 feet, which is 3 feet thiek, showing very good gold. They are now er(lcting machinery, with the intention o{ testing the reef at the depth of 400 feet. · 26 BLACKWOOD ·DIVISION AND BLUE MOUNTAIN SOUTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. John F. Hansen, Mining Registrar. The purchasers of the late Suftan mine and plant have formed a new company, under the style of the New Sultan Company. The area formerly held by the North Sultan has also become their property.; and the drive from the main Sultan shaft, at the 600-foot level, is now being extended by them on the Sultan lode, to prospect that area. The old workings on the several lodes intersecting the mine have been let to eight different parties of tributers, consisting of forty miners. One or two parties of these tributers have had a net average of from four to five pounds sterling per man per week; other parties, however, have not averaged wages. 1'he total quantity of quartz crushed has given an average yield of about 5~ dwts. of gold per ton; whereas the late Sultan Company's last quarter's return showed an average yield of 14i dwts. per ton. 'J'he number of miners employed upon the collapse of the late company was between sixty and seventy; the quantity of quartz raised for crushing, however, amounted only to about one-half of the quantity raised by the tributers. The new company are also driving on the course of Trewhella's lOde, at the .175-foot level, and are cross-cutting for Mounter's lode .. at the 400-foot level. The inilux of water in the Morning Star Company's mine having greatly abated, the contractors are now able to push forward the cross-drive, and the striking of the reef is daily expected.· . · . 1'he reef worked by the New Cosmo Company, Snake Gully, is of rL very encouraging character; it is about 30 feet in width. A small trial crushing therefrom ga.ve an average yield of 6 dwts. of 12;0ld per ton of quartz crushed. A new shaft is now being sunk further north, for the purpose of testing the reef at a deeper level. The batteries crushing with water power have all been at a standstill, a sufficient supply of water not being available. ALLUVIAL MrNniG. · Several miners are out prospecting in the gullies and creeks (tributaries of the River r~erderderg), but .I have not heard of any· one being successful as yet. A small patch of shallow alluviums has been found on a terrace Of a hill at Yankee Creek, yielding several small lll, lggets, the largest weighing nearly .3 ozs. . No miners are employed in mining for metals' or minerals other than gold. · The only water sold during the quarter has been from the Blackwood reservoir, for sluicing the banks and bed of the River Lerderderg. About three sluice-heads have been let, averaging about 15s. per week per sluice-head. The rainfall during the quarter has been :-January, 1·38; February, 0·39; March, 2·42; total, 4·19 inches. . BEECHWORTH MINING DISTRICT.

'1. I BEECHWORTH DIVISION. Mr. Alexander Alderdice, Mining Registra'l'. · The very dry weather broke up towards the end of March. During that month about five inches of rain fell in this loca1ity, and gave the sluicers a good opportunity of washing down. For the quarter the quantity of gold disposed of shows an increase of more than double that for the last quarter of 1880 ; and, from what can be learned, this augurs well for the production of the next quarter, as, up to this time, none'·of the ''big" ;claims have washed aown. : . . ' ...... " . The erection of the Rose Reef quartz mill, in the neighborhood of· Beech worth, has given an impetus to quartz mining in and around the locality, as hitherto the charges for crushing and carting prevented many comparatively poor reefs from being worked. Several of those old and abandoned reefs have been taken up ; and it is' known that they will give good returns for working, now that machinery is near at hand. ··The· Rose Reef itself has turned out well, and, at the present depth (110 feet), shows a body of stone about 5 feet in width, carrying good gold. This company deserves great credit for the manner in which they have, in the face of adverse circumstances, put machinery on the ground; and they really have opened up a new era in quartz mining in the district. Several new finds (some of them very rich) fl.re reported from the neighborhoods of Myrtleford and Barwidgee; but only small crushings from any· of these reefs have tal1en place. · Little gold has been obtained from Stony Creek during the quarter, as there was no water to wash; but considerable piles of dirt have been brought to the surface, which will be washed' as soon as sufficient water· can be obtained. . The Murmungee Sluicing Company are still cngagQd in putting in . their tunnel into Ounningham's Gully. Gold has been ob~ained in it already; but the company intend to go on about 100 yards further before they open out. The opening of this claim in Bowman's Forest will, without· doubt, lead to many others being worked in this locality, if sufficient water can be obtained. There are three distinct leads, floors, or runs of gold in this place, and only tlie first, or upper 01ie, has yet been tried to any extent ;-it has proved payable, aud it is believed that those underneath are payable also. There is very little to say about Eldorado. A new company has taken up a part ()f the old Kneebone Company's ground (the shallow part), and it is believed to be good. ·There is a good show of both gold and tin in it; and, if it can be worked profitably, two or three more claims may be taken up round about it. Little's claim, at Deep Creek, will, it is said, turn out a good deal of gold when washed down. It is well worthy a visit from those who take a,n interest in gold mining; in order to see the extraordinary· way in which the . precious .metal is deposited. In .the space· of a quarter acre may be seen ground varying from 50 feet to 8 feet in depth ; the rock, or bottom, rising and falling in a most fantastic manner, with deep and narrow. gutters. Some of these are poor, some of them rich, and the general clmracter of the gold is rough and heavy. · . The Wallaby Reef Company, at Hurdle Flat, are .still putting in the tunnel. The ground is hard, and, although several S!Jl~l yei~~ have been, me~ wi~b, the COmp~ny intcnd.go~ng Qlt With thq hlnue\ J.lntil the main fll!lf P.!l-6 been struck. · " ·· · · . · · ' • · · 27 YACKANDANDAH NORTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. J. C. Forster, Mining Registrar. There is no mining as yet in this subdivision.

YACKANDANDAH SOUTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. J. Smart, Mining_ Registrar. In alluvial mining I have to report that, owing to the scarcity of water, several claims suspended operations, the owners seeking employment elsewhere for the present. - · In quartz mining, at Sandy Creek, D

INDIGO DIVISION. iWr. R. Arrowsmitlt, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. _ Quartz mining has been somewhat dull during the quarter, owing, in a measure, to the unusual scarcity of water, required to work the mills, which are now fully employed since the late rains. The Robert Burns Prospecting Company have abandoned their cross-cut, at the 200-foot level, without discovering payable stone. They have a<:cepted a tender to sink the shaft another 50 feet. The old Magenta mine and machinery have been let on trih!J.te, for twelve months, to a company of six miners. This mine has not been profitably worked of late years ; but it is probable that, in the hands of energetic working men, it may again yield remunerative returns. · . The Chiltern Valley Gold Mines Company (Limited) have sunk their ''engine'' or "pumping shaft" to a depth of 219 feet, where loose drifts, with larger quantities of water, have been encountered, as was anticipated, and further progress in sinking is suspended for the present. · - The Indigo Stockyard Company (Limited) have successfully sunk their shaft to a depth of 290 feet, and made considerable progress with a main drive from the 270-foot level, to work the auriferous drifts in the Indigo lead. The bed rock was reached at 243 feet; and it is intended to sink to a total depth of 315 feet-a level that will eommand all the ground on the lower side intended to be worked from the shaft. Mr. Coclr, the energetic manager, among other improvements, has introduced iron puddling machines, in lieu of the primitive wooden ones hitherto in use in this divis10n. Altogether this plant is most substantial and complete in every respect, reflecting great credit on Mr. Duncan, the engineer in charge, as well as the manager. Very little alluvial gold will be raised in this division until the workings of these two large companies are much further. advanced.

BUCKLAND DIVISION. Mr. B. K. Smart, .Mining Registrar. . . The quantity of gold won during the quarter has not been so great as that obtained during the previous quarter, the falling off having been in the yields from quartz, on account of the smaller quantity raised; still the reports from the many reefs now being worked are as encouraging as ever, and the prospects of the miners quite as hopeful. . . · There has, however, been a marked increase in the quantity of alluvial gold; This is quite an unexpected result, as the past quarter was the time of year when claims, as a. rule, have to cease beiug worked, for the warit of water, and that more gold should he obtained at that very time is good proof that alluvial mining is in a most satisfactory _condition in general. . . There is now no scarcity of water for mining purposes in any part of this division. I have no information as to the sale of any water.

W ANDILIGONG SUBDIVISION.' .ilfr. T. C. Kaigllin, Mining Registrar. As anticipated in my last report, the new reefs opened up towards the end of quarter ending Decemb~r 31st have kept the yield of gold up to a satisfactory amount. The returns from the Hillsborough quartz mine for the quarter have been very good, and stone showing gold freely is still being raised. . Nothing of importance has been struck as yet in the Cornish Mine, although the prospecting party is still kept at work. . · A reef carrying gold has been found in virgin ground on the Hon. J. ·A. Wallace's 'I'ry Again Lease, Upper Growler's Creek. Operations to test its permanency are now being conducted. Jones and Co., of the Buck-eye Quartz Claim, Upper Morse's Creek, have their crushing plant almost com- pleted, and will be able to start crushing about the second week in May. . Two new reefs have been opened on Upper Morae's Creek during the quarter and several on Growler's Creek; but, with one exception, the latter have proved only surface blows. · Nothing worth reporting has occurred in connection with alluvial mining.

ALEXANDRA SUBDIVISION. Mr. A. B. Ainsworth, Mining Sm·veyor and Registrar. There is a revival in mining and speculation in this subdivision. Four of the mines held under lease in the Lucky line are at work, and one of these has a tributo party (thel.'Iarchioness of Normanby Company) now crushing, which is likely to wash up in the course of next month. The Marchioness of Normanby '£ribute Company have increq§~d ~4!lir sburft by ijO fee~ ju gepth! and arc ~QIY qgw1t 250 feet, 'rhey hav~ also ~omplet~d !l ri§e of 70 feet 28

into their 200-foot level, on the course of their reef, which shows 2 feet of stone and about 5 feet 6 inches of spur ground between the walls. The t.ributers are not at present in any of the known shoots of gold, but expect to make one of these within two or three weeks. 'l'hey are stoping both north and south. The Vulcan Mine Company are stoping, rising, and driving from their 400-foot level. They have about 65 tons of stone to grass, but have not yet got any shoot of gold, and the matrix is poor. They are completing their battery tables, and pushino- on the erection of their new engine, intended to drive ten stamps, and valued at £200. The Secundus Tribute Co~pany have also a few tons of good stone to grass, and are now sinking their shaft 70 feet, for the purpose of more economically stoping their ground. The Reward Company are 25 feet down in their shaft, on the Homeward-bound Reef, and a new tribute, within the Marchioness of Normanby Company's tribute ground, to be known as the Homeward-bound Company, is on the point of starting their shaft, on the same reef. At Steele's Creek some old ground, on a reef-line formerly known as the Invincible, has been taken up, and is being again prospected, with encouraging features. The Pig and Whistle Reef, at M:olesworth, is now in the hands of a persevering old miner, and will, it is hoped, soon again be at work. An attempt is being made to form a company for the purpose of working some cobalt veins, in soft granite, at ~1:olesworth. The Providence 'l'ribnters (Messrs. Bannerman, Hockings, and Thrupp) have con tributed the main yield to the quartz crushing returns of the subdivision for the quarter, and will, it is hoped, obtain further valuable results in the course of the next few months. The Hope of Richmond Company· had a payable yield from a reef known as the Albion, which, however, has, for the present, pinched out.· J.•Ferguson continues to obtain good results from his mine, and, so far as the Durham reefs have been worked, they have given payable results. The Solferino Company has· had no crushing during the quarte1·. Several other ventures are, I am informed, on the point of being launched, and more lively times may be anticipated during the coming winter. In alluvial I have nothing new to report. The opening of a branch of the Bank of Victoria at Yea will ensure easier compilations, and a better check on the yields obtained by alluvial miners, which hitherto have been difficult to trace, in that part of the subdivision. No metal but gold is being worked for, and I hear of no water having been sold.

DRY CREEK SUBDIVISION. Afr. J. Pemberton, .1Jfining Regist:rw·. ·There is nothing worthy of remark since my last report.

BENALLA SUBDIVISION. Mr. C. H. Wlteatland, A1ining Registrar. There is little to report on in connexion with mining in this· subdivision, with the exception of ·the progres - ·made in providing machinery.· At the Energetic Company's claim nearly 300 loads of dirt have been raised, and it is intended to commence washing immediately. Should the result of this washing prove favorable, a great impetus will be given to operations in the subdivision. · As a proof of the confidence felt in the prospects of the Bcnalla district, I may state that the New Temora Company has incurred heavy expense in the purchase and carriage to its ground of a large quantity of machi_nery. The machinery, it is expected, will be placed in position in from eight· to ten weeks, when active work will be resumed, so far as this company is concerned. - The Lion Quartz Company, which has also obtained machinery, at considerable expense, has, I am informed, about lOO tons of excellent stone ready for crushing, awaiting the completion of the erection of its battery, which will take place very shortly. . . · . · The Exhibit Alluvial Company has struck a quartz reef, about 4 or 5 feet below the washdirt. This reef, · which is 3 feet wide in the shaft, is expected to prove payable. _ About 50 yards west of the New Temora boundary, a quartz reef has also been opened up; by Powell, Clarke, and Cook, and several good specimens have been obtained. A lease for the ground has been applied for. The above are the only items of special interest during the quarter, but other parties are also busily engaged in mining about Benalla. - _ From Gowangardie I have not received replies in all instances to my applic~ttions fer information, hut I believe nothing of importance is stirring there. The Onward Company has, for the present, suspended operations. From Strathbogie I have received no particulars.

GAFFNEY'S CREEK SUBDIVISION. Afr. A. B. Ainsworth, Alining Surveyor and Registrar. _ The tabulated record annexed covers all the yields obtained during the quarter, save some 9 ozs. 18 dwts. 15 grs. sold to the Bank of Victoria, and added into the general result, particulars of which yield I have not been able to obtain. 'fhe Hunt's Ama,lgrunated Company has, in addition to the cJ•ushing given, obtained 10 ozs. 5 dwts. by sluicing the surfacings of their ground, which amount is included in the alluvial yield for the qmirter. · · Mr. Younghusband's tributers, known as Dempsey's party; have crushed some 350 tens of stone so far; but the washing-up will not be in time for my report, and the result obtained must stand over until next quarter. The yield credited to the Golden Belt is a payable one for thetributers, and their pr()spects continue fair. The Al Company, which usually adds so materia.Ily to our yields, has not .crushed during the quarter, water having been scarce; the prospects of the tributers are, however, promising. -The Victoria mine has no yield for the quarter, neither has the Great Eastern Cornpauy or Lanraville Corn-. pany. The latter mines have been idle. . · The yield obtained by the. Wallaby trihutcrs is remarkably good, the width of the reef worked being 4 feet, and the stone is _oht::ined near the surface. This excellent min_e prc:miscs to con~i1:uc a success for.the prescnt"tributers. · Cons1dermg the season of the year, the results obtmned lll the subqlVmon arc 9!1\lOlll'l\gll!g, bolh m quart!\ ;\nd alluviums. Diggers have averaged close upon 20s. rt week. . No metal save gold is being mined for. r he;;tr of :po water having been sold. 29 WOOD'S POINT SUBDIVISION. Mr. A. B. Ainswortlt, :Mining Surveyo1· and Registra'l'. The present is the dull season of the year in the mountain districts, owing to the W!l.ter reqnl:·cd for crushing power in the majority of mines running short. I have, however, to report a valuable find in the Morning Star chums, a vein having been struck by Stackpole and party, although narrow, showing very rich gold in places. This vein will presently be opened on in the Rope mine, adjoining ground, which has lately passed into the hands of a small but energetic proprietary, and there is every prospect of some high yields being obtained in both mines during the forthcoming quarter. 'fhe excellent yield credited and tabled to the United Company has, in the meantime, proved very satisfactory to the tributers, and will doubtless be followed by other yields of a like valuable character. Only one party of tributers is at present working in the Franklin, and the yield recorded is a payable one. The All Nations Company are for the present Oll poor stone, with a good prospect of improvement. J. Givannini is not working his claim south of the All Nations, nor has the Ribernia Company so far made any progress. J. Knopp and another have had no crushing at the Leviathan during the quarter, and the other lessee, Thorpe, is not now working bis ground. 1'he Hope and the Lady Frankliri Oompanies have had no crushings, and the latter is idle. At the Royal Standard, the Moulltaineer Company have six men at work prospecting and stoping, and Mulholland and party are busily engaged erecting their b.attery, which is to be completed in time for the first water-fall. . . The whole of the crushings for this subdivision are entered in the table forwarded. I have heard nothing further anent the find of an antimony reef, the value of which was p1·obably exaggerated. The alluvial has yielded diggers an average of about 25s. per week for the quarter, and there is nothing new to record in regard thereto. No metal is being worked but gold in this subdivision, and no water has been sold.

BIG RIVER SUBDIVIHION. Mr. A. B. Ainswortlt, 1lfining Surveyor and Registrar. The only two quartz mines working in this subdivision are the Boseobelle and the Luck's AIL The Boscobelle Company have not crushed any stone during the quarter, but will be starting shortly. The Luck's All Company is prospecting, with hopeful anticipations of success. · The alluvial has been slightly more productive than usual during the quarter, and earnings have reached an average of 20s. per miner per week. o metal is being worked save gold. Water, whell sold, ranges from 2s. 6d. to 4s. 6d. per sluice-head per week.

MITT.A l\UTT.A NORTH SUBDIVISION.. Mr. J. C. Forster, Mining Registrar. I have to report, for the p::t.st quarter, that the Sherman claim, on the Flagstaff Hill, crushed 17 tons of quartz, which yielded 55 ozs. of gold. I have resson to believe that there are many reefs in the same locality that might be profitably worked, but miners have llo encouragement to look for them, much less to raise qu::t.rtz, as they cannot get it crushed. Any person having a battery, and erecting it in a central position, would be likely to do well. Nothing fresh to report about Cotton-tree. Thiugs are about the same as when last reported upon.

MI'fT.A MITTA SOUTH SUBDIVISIOX Mr. Wm. Porteous, Mining Reyistrm·. The only alluvial mining that seems to be carried on is sluicing, from which the amoullt of gold can r::trely be correctly ascertained, as the gold is generally taken out of the district to be sold. Moncrieff and party have com menced operations ill a sluicing claim in the Mitta Mitta village, but with what result I have not yet heard. All operations in the river are now stopped. A great number of Chinese are at present engaged in harvesting tobacco, and, consequently, have given up milling for a while. 'l'here appears to be nothing in quartz mining to cause any great excitement ; but I hope by next quarter to ha.ve something definite to report .. The Welcome Reef will no doubt be well tried by that time; and as it appears to be well defined, and from 1 to 4 feet in width, I think, if it is auriferous at all, it will cause a slight stir in reeling, alld likely be the means of bringing capital to the subdivision, which may have the effect of leading to the discovery of rich reefs as yet unknown. There is no alteration to report in connexion with the Endeavour Company, Operations h:we ceased at the Pony Company. · At Granite Flat the past has been rather a dull quarter in reeling, but I think the next will be a little bettei;.

J.AMIESON SUBDIVISION.

Mr. ~· H. Edwards, 1Jfining Registrar.

The Sn.ilor Bill's Tributers have driven north a further dis~ance of 70 feet along the course of the reef, good gold having been seen durillg the last 40 feet. A winze hn.s beell sunk 50 feet, to connect the upper workings with the main tunnel. The manager reports the mine in good working order, and crushing will be commenced as soon as water is available. The Gleeson's Lease and Venture 'fribute companies are both engaged in driving and raising stone, but have been unable to crush for wn,nt of water. Nothing fresh from Mitchell's Creek ; the prospectors are still there waiting fo'r water to prove the ground. No water has been sold during the past quarter. Gold only is mined for. SANDHURST MINING DISTRICT.

SANDHURST DIVISION. Mr. N. G. Stephens, Mining Re,qistrar. . The pas{ quarter has been an eventful one in mining affairs, which have been carried on with great success. The continuous rich yields and large. dividends from the Garden Gully United Coinpany, New Chum Consolidated Company, Ellesmere Company, United Hustlers and Redan, and the Ellenborough Company have assisted materially in establishing confidence in the mining resources of this goldfield, and have attracted many investors from other parts of the colony. · About two months since the London ·G. G. Company struck a good reef in their ground on the G.G. Reef, . Golden Gully, at a depth of about 100 feet, which reef has averaged 3 ozs. to the ton. This discovery induced a great rush for ground in that locality, and the success then attending mining- in nearly every portion of the division . caused a general demand for lea.qes and. shares. 'l'he amount of business transacted in mining, and the excitement . attending it, has not been equalled since the memorable period of 1870 and 1871. At that time many thousands of pounds were spent ~n sinking shafts that were abandoned before anything payable was discovered, but the outlay of that money has been a great help to those who have recently taken up the same ground, as a little cross-cutting in some of these mines has resulted in the discovery of reefs. Abandoned shafts really represent capital and saving of . time, and should be protected from injury. · · · A very promising- reef has been discovered about 17 miles from Sandhurst. Good specimens have been found in it, and a considerable amount of ground on the line has been .taken up in consequence. On the Old TomReef, Whipstick, several parties are doing well, and Mr. Bolle has come on an exceedingly rich patch in his claim, but all the reef is good.. Unfortunately he is obliged to cease working his engine on account of want of water, which will seriously intetfere with mining in that district until a supply can be obtained from some source. . . A very promising reef has been found in the Back Creek Ranges, about two miles south of the City of Sandhurst. It is thought to .be a continuation of the Hustler's Reef, and, if so, is an important discovery. I have not yet heard of any crushing, but gold is found in the stone, and it is believed the reef will prove payable. · The yield of gold during the past three months has been in excess of previous quarters, but, owing to the . great amount of business and excitement in mining affairs, I have been unable to obtain anything like complete . returns.

KILMORE DIVISION. RICEDY CREEK. Mr. R. A. F. Murray, Geological Surveyor. The development of the quartz mines has been in active progress during the quarter. 'l'he Kaiser, Evening Star, Band of Hope, and Happy Land mines have been energetically worked and fair prospects obtained, but the distance to a crushing mill therefrom retards progress. · · A promising discovery of a small but rich vein has ·been made near the old Shepherd's line. The Langridge, Crown, and Doyle's mines have continued to yield excellent returns. Prospecting has been actively carried on north wards from these in the Gladstone, North Langridge, Overland, and ·other mines, and southward in the South Langridge and South Langridge Extended, \Vhere good veins have been found. · Good stone has been obtained in the Red Rover, McGrath's United, Empress of India, and President mines, while encouraging prospects and indications have been met with in other mines on the Captatn's, Kangaroo, and Palmerston lines of reef. With the increased supply .of water for crushing purposes which may be expected during the winter, there is every reason to anticipate good returns from a number of the mines during the next few months.

HEATHCOTE DIVISION AND W ARANGA SOUTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. E. C. Bell, Mining Registrar. There has been no great change in mining affairs in this district since my last report. Work in the majority of mines is steadily progressing. · Hedley and party, who commenced operations in January last on their lease near the creek, with a boring apparatus known as Wright and Edwards' patent, obtained a bottom at 16 feet, but after going a further depth of 65 feet obtained no indications of a second bottom ; 30 feet of the boring was through hard rock. A contract has been · takim in the Sims Freehold Company for sinking a shaft 80 feet deep, and it is expected they will bottom in a few weeks. The Star of the South Company, Argyle Gully, ohtained an excellent prospect of gold lately from a 20-inch body of stone, at a··depth of lOO feet. · · The Deep Lead Company have been sinking a. shaft through the first bottom on the opposite side to their deep shaft, and have been going through a peculiar cemented rock, which gets harder as they go down; the real bottom has not yet been reached. The Bombay mine, at Costerfield, are sinking their shaft and extending their levels ·; if they have little water to contend with, they expect shortly from 60 to 90 tons of antimony qre and seconds to put through the furnace. Thos. Fasham and party, from Ballarat, are about to start puddling and cement crushing here on an extensive scale, and intend erecting two steam puddling mills and a crushing battery of 24 head of ·stamps.·

WARANGA NORTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. Henry Hicks, Mining Registrar. I have the honor to report that in consequence of the want of water alluvial mining has been almost at a standstill. A prospecting claim was registered during the quarter, in the neighbourhood of Coy's Diggings; a small rush set in, but beyond the yield from the prospecting claim (which is still at work) nothing was struck, and, water being scarce, the men soon left. . . The annexed return of the yield of gold from the quartz mines cannot be taken as an index of the present state of the mines in the subdivision. At Coy's Diggings and Rush worth the machines have been idle, having no water. A few lots only have been crushed at Whroo, where a small supply of water was obtainable. The prospects of the mines throughout the subdivision are very good. , . The Black Cloud Antimony Company have completed the sinking of their shaft; its depth is now 175 feet. Forty (40) tons of antimony have been raised during the quarter, and· 18 men were employed. · 31

MARYBOROUGH MINING DISTRICT.

MARYBOROUGH DIVISION. Mr. P. Virtue, jun, Mining Registrar. ALLUVIAL MINING. The excessive drought which has prevailed during the quarter has most injuriously affected· the mmmg interests of this division, and a permanent supply of water for mining purposes is a subject which deserves serious consideration. Several of the claims at Chiha.mans and elsewhere have. returned no yields of gold in consequence of ti).e want of water. But the recent rains we have had will, at least for the present, remove the difficulty which has so long existed, and will enable miners to wash the stuff they have stored. One prospecting and four extended alluvial claims were registered during the quarter. The aggregate area of the extended claims is 18 acres; they are situate at .Alma, Moonlight, and Chinaman's Flat. The Jlrospecting claim is owned by George Pyke, and is situate at Chinaman's Flat. From ro loads, a return was obtained of 3 ozs 11 dwts. 3 grs. Depth, 3!J feet ; width of gutter, 30 feet. . The Duke has at last been drained of the water in the shaft. The repairs to the damaged clack will soon be finished, .and mining operations renewed with vigour. Proper precautions will now be taken to prevent a similar accident from occurring as tha:t which has caused so much labor and expense, and which has for so long a time stopped operat.ion.s in one of the finest mines in the division. The Carisbrook United are making good progress. The prospects recently obtained afford a good proOf of the valuable character of the mine. Considerable delay in the operations of the mine has been caused through the water in the surface drifts leaking into the drives. The Goldbrook cont~nues to maintain its character as a first-class mine. Fair returns have been obtained from it, and also from· the Young Phrenix Tribute. · ' The following is a statement of the gold obtained from the principal alhi.vial mines in this division during ~he quarter:- oz. dwt. gr. The claim at Blackman's Lead, on the Long-looked-for Reef, i~ own~d by John .Austin Jamcs. .The reef is new, and promises exceedingly well. Depth, 10 feet; width, 2 feet ; prospect, 2 ozs. per ton. · : Thomson and party, whose claim is situate near the .Mariner's Reef, had a crushing of 52 tons recently, from which they obtained a return of 204 ozs., or an average of nearly 4 ozs. to the ton. This is one of the best yields that I have had to report for a lQng time. The Telegraph Extended crushed 133 tons, from which they obtained ~52 ozs. 14 dwts. The works at Mariner's Reef have been idle during the quarter; no men have been employed.

MA.JORCA. SUBDIVISION. Mr. P. Virtue, Jun., ]}fining Registrar. The Forbes Freehold mine has been relet on tribute, with every prospect of success. The New Kong Meng Company are making excellent progress; they now employ 70 men, and have extende!l the area of their claim, by purchasing from Messrs. Rich and party the Minorca Extended Claim of eight acres which adjoins it. AMHERST DIVISION. Mr. C. Smith, Mining Registrar. There has been a great falling off in the yield of gold during the quarter, both from alluvial and quartz mining. The chief alluvialmiues along the Mount Greenock Lead are still doing very little more than prospecting, and until these mines are properly op~ned out, the 'yield of gold will be very low for the number of miners employed· by the end of next quarter, however; we may expect to hear of fair returns from the Rip Van Winkle Unio~ Extended, and Nichols Freehold companies, all uf which claims are .being rapidly opened out.. The prospects of alluvial mining in this division mainly de~~end upon these three claims, and a great impetus will bt;; given to this class of mining should they prove remunerat1ve, A considerable amount of prospecting is also being done in quartz mining. The Union Q. M. Company, . A.mherst, have been sinking a new shaft, and erecting machinery consisting of one pumping and one winding engine well and· substantially built, which has occupied nearly the whole of the quarter, and will be completed in the course of a week or two ; this company intend to erect crushing. machinery also when the mine is opened out. The New Briseis Company have been sinking their shaft deeper, and are now down 250 feet; they have also put in a cross-cut and struck a well-defined quartz reef which promises to yield well. A. quartz reef has been found by Davidson and party in Nuggetty Gully which yielded 136 ozs. 9 dwts. from 102 tons of stone, got from near the smface, and the reef is well defined. Other claims have been taken up along the same line, but have not as yet struck payable gold. A company is being formed to erect a new crushing plant on the Mysterious Lead, near Talbot, as it is thought that several reefs in the locality can be worked to advantage by having a mill on the spot. The water used for sluicing purposes is supplied by the Borough Council of 'falbot, who received the sum of £49 7s. 6d. during the quarter, the quantity sold not being known. · · · ·

A VOCA SUBDIVISION . . Mr. D. O'Leary, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. Mining generally continues to. give encouraging. prospects. The Working Miners' Company, at Hoi:nebuah, still pays satisfactory dividends, and the lead northerly therefrorn· gives every indiclttion of continued richness. The Golden Stream Company has now a considemble quantity of very powerful machinery on its property ready for erection, comprising two engines of 50-inch and 24-inch cylinders respectively. The two pumps are to be of 22-inch diameter, a proof that the company is fully determined to be able to cope with whatever water is likely to be niet with. 4. representative of the company has informed me that the full cost of the machinery and improvements will amount to close upon £20,000. The starting of this cla.im will give a great impetus to mining in the locality. In quartz mining an important event was the purchase by the Union Jack Company of the claim of Hall and Iuglis at Percydale. This company has now a compact and valuable property with every prospect of a satisfactory return for the outlay. The Vale's Reef Company has made arrangements for the enlargement of the shaft, and the work is progreAsing favorably. A reef has recently been opened up at. Lexton, which gives promise of great richness; however, as its resources have not yet been fully ascertained, no decided opinion can be given as to its quality.

DUNOLLY AND TARNAGULLA DIVISIONS. lr.lr. P. Simpson, Acting 1tlininrJ Surveyor and Registrar. The Queen's Birthday Company, Goldsborough.-This mine still looks well, the stone everywhere showing gold. They have completed the opening of No. 6 chamber at a depth of 638 feet, and purpose now, by the aid of drills, to open up the reef at: this level, which will, it is anticipated, give profitable crushings for some years. The air compressors for the drills will be completed, it is expected, in about a fortnight. In sinking the Goldsborough shaft and driving there are signs of stone ; being at the extreme north end of the claim, this will doubtless prove a valuable discovery. The North Birthday Company, Goldsborough, are engaged in sinking a shaft and opening up their mine. Tenders have been invited for the removal and erection of machinery. The South Birthday Company, Goldsborough, are cross-cutting east at the 290-foot leveL 'l'he north drive is in 43 feet on the course of the lode, and the south drive 2 feet. The King's Birthday Company, Goldsborough, are cross-cutting at the 5'10-foot level; they have driven east 88 feet, and west 94 feet. Quartz has been met with in the eastern cross-cut, but none in the western. · The Sydenham Company, South Dunolly, have be ell sinking their main shaft to the 300-foot level and putting. in a cross-cut for the Quaker's Reef. They have also opened out, and have had a crushing from a mass of auriferous. quartz 12 feet wide from the west side of their main reef. · · The Hard- Hill Company, Dunolly, are prospecting on the surface lode. Sinking oper:ations will be resumed on obtaining .more powerful machinery for dealing with the water. Macdonald and Co., Specimen Reef, near Dunolly, cut the reef at 70 feet, and are driving north and south. on the course of same. Owing to their good prospects, as will be seen by the tables, seven other claims, most, if not all of which are being worked, have been taken up on this line of reef. 'fhe Welcome Company, Bealiba, are sinking· their shaft from 280 feet to 330 feet. The Yorkshire Company, Tarnagulla, are cross-cut.ting for a reef at a depth of 340 feet. A new block of stone has been found on the surface about 80 feet east from the ma,in shaft, the prospects from which are considered payable. The stone is from 6 in. to 1 ft. 6 in. wide. . · The North Yorkshire Company, Tarnagulla, are driving at the 152-foot level for a reef, but none has yet been met with. The South Yorkshire Company, Taruagulla, have been sinking to and driving at the 170-foot level. T)le Old Poverty Company, Tarnagulla, are still engaged in pumping out water from old workings: It is now below the 400-foot level, and they expect to have the mine thoroughly drained in a few weeks. The United Specimen and Phceuix Company, Tarnagulla, are putting in a level at a depth of 300 feet. The appearance of the stone is improving. 'l'he reef is from 3 feet to 18 feet wide. The Working Miners, Coy's Diggings, have temporarily stopped work to obtain additional machinery prior to sinking their shaft from 140 feet to 200 feet. . The New North Johnson's, Coy's Diggings, ·have sunk their new shaft 70 feet, and are putting in a cross-cut for reef. · The Sheoak Company, Moliagul, are sinking from the 103-foot level on a new make of stone which is rapidly widening out, and from which fair prospects have been obtained. · 'fhe Golden Star Company, Llanelly, have been sinking their shaft to 150 feet, and are now driving on the course of the lode, which is a large reef, carrying u little gold. · · · ·

INGLEWOOD. DIVISION. 1Hr. F. E. Horan, Mining Registrar. As.w:tS to be expected, alluvial mining has fallen off considerably during the past (jUarter, owing to scarcity of water, while in quartz mining the wnnt of ndequate machinery has made itself felt. It is, however, a matter for conaratulntion that in two instances, at least, the latter requirement will soon be supplied, great progress having bee~ made in the erection of machinery to work the Morning Star Company's mine, and the Jersey Reef Quartz Minino- Company h:.wing purchased the. Maxwell Reef Company_'s plant, which they intend to remove at once and re-ere;t on their own leasehold. This plant, which is in good condition, and includes a battery of twelve stamps, will enable the Jersey Company· to redouble their efforts to develop the resources of th7ir mine .. · It i~ intended, on· 33 the erection of the plant, to commence crus_hi_ng from the Li~tlc 9-em sh~ft, in whic~ there is a large body of I?aya?le stone available. The Burke's Flat Gold i\innng Company ( J:i onc"s) contmue to obtam excellent returns. Thm.r mme is now the deepest in this division, having attained a depth of G50 feet. . , Within the last fortnight rain has fallen, which has proved a grent boon to the mining pop?-latwn, but water is still scarce, and the alluvial miners are patiently awaiting the advent of such a supply as will enable them t~ operate on the washdirt they have been accumulating for some time past. It is confidently anticipated that the returns for the next quarter will show a very considerable increase.

WEDDERBURN DIVISION. }fr. J. Reaclt, Mining Registrar.

ALLUVIAL. There has been a rush to some new ground, situat·e about half a mile from the township, on the Kingower read. About forty miners are still working there; and, from what I can learn, most of them are making wages. ·want of water is a serious drawbaek to mining operations iu this division; all tb,e puddling machines are idle in consequence. · QUARTZ. A erushing plant is being erected on the Gorilla Reef, which is expected to be ready for work in !tbout one month from this.

REDBANK SUBDIVISION. lrfr. D. O'Leary, Mining Surveyor and Registrar, Nothing of importanee in mining has occurred in this subdivision during the quarter.

ST. ARNAUD SOUTH SUBDIVISION. llfr. P. Simpson, Acting Mining Surveyor and Registrar. There is now no quartz mining of importance in this subdivision; and in alluvial mining there is nothing worthy of note. . . · Two of the three mills treating quartz tailings have been idle during the last three months for want of water. No water has been sold during tlie quarter. .

ST. ARNAUD NORTH SUBDIVISION. J.l:fr. P. Simpson, Acting 1Jfining Surveyor and Registrar. · The Lord Nelson Company are steadily opening out their mine. The returns, as shown in tables, arc the result of a few weeks' crushing only. · · . . '!'he Rising Star Company aro stoping out from the 460-foot level. Munro and·co., Wilson's HilL-All the maehinery has been removed from this claim. At the Queen Semiramis Reef the shaft is being sunk from 370 feet to 400 feet, preparatory to stoping out. At the Blink Bounie elaim a small but very good crushing has been obtained. ~'he Royal George Company, Emu, are driving and stoping at the 140-foot level.

ALLUVIAL MINING, Within the last three weeks a rush has taken place at Dalyenong, about two miles north .. westerly of Archdale. There are about 300 miners on the ground. The prospectors are obtaining about I! ozs. to the load. The sinking is about 20 feet, and dry.

CASTLEMAINE MINING DISTRICT.

CASTLEMAINE DIVISION . .Mr. T. L. Bt·own, .Mining Survey01· and Registrar. A few of our quartz miners have been drawn away to Tasmania. and Reedy Creek, to employment at advanced wa.ges, othendse there is little variation in the number and occupation of our ·population.

ALLUVIAL Jl.fiNING. The sluicers continue to use the· val.uablc water supplied to them, fair wages being the usual result. From Castlemaine to Guildford there is a fine stream of " tail water" from these sluicing operations, which runs over and through old gold-woTkings all the way, yet· it is almost unused, the major portion of Oastlemaine miners not knowing how to utilize it, while mine proprietors from Beechworth express surprise at the apparent waste of water. The "deep leads" under the Basaltic Plain continue to be worked on private property. Dallas and Co., Andrews and Co., and Dallas No. 2 have each tunnels 2,30::> feet long, driven from the escarpment northerly; Commons and Co. are in 1,400 feet-all obtaining p11yable washdirt. The Grand Trunk Company, having sunk their engine shaft, are now erecting a 25 horse-power engine for pumping, puddling, &e. .A new company is projected to work Messrs . .Mc"Naughton, Aitkin, and Ha~es' properties.

QUA.RTZ JYfiNING, The Forest Creek Wattle Gully Company are making progress in the erection of new machinery for pumpin11; and windin~, the most approved appliances for the safety of the mine and men being obtained. The pumps and g-ear n,re undergoing thorough overhaul and improvement, in 01·det· to enable them to cope with the drainage from the whole line of reef. Much interest is centred upon the suecess of this company in proving payable quartz in depth, the mine \>eiug upon the main lode of the district, with numerous rich leaders coming toward the reef, whieh has been proved down to 470 feet, and the leaders, which are expected to make into the main lode, at a greater depth. . The Central Vi4attle Gully Company continue to employ a good number of men. They have .now taken the Wheal }'erre1l grom:d on trib~1te; this they can work by their own shnfts and machinery• . The Crown Tributers (five men) have obtained 104~ ozs. of gold from 129 tons of quartz, and are now: 'Crushing. . 'l'eague and Co. are working ou ·the Western Wattle Gully Reef, which underlays east toward. the main lead, and h~s proYed rich near surface. · On the Wattle Gully line, northerly, Kemp and Co. have opened upon a small Jen.de~, ~nd obtained. 14 ozs.· 12 dwts. of gold from 9 tons of quartz. · . 1'he centre and enrliest worked portion of the Eureka Reef is being busily and profitably worked by five parties of tnbnters. _The workings have a peculiar appearance. As the lode deepens 1t assumes a saddle shape, thence forming two reefs ; the western leg underlaying west 72 degrees, ftnd the eastern leg easterly 83 degrees, both reefs carrying regular hanging walls. The present, eastern workings comprise numerous irregular quartz leaders, within lOO feet from the main lode, from the 'surface to 200 feet deep. The Kuggety .Company are still sinliing their engine shaft, and are now down 330 feet., .. , '.rhe Ajax United conti!lne doing "dead .work." This, it is supposed, willlo;vl to a second formation ·of quartz; · ' · 'rhe quantity of water sold during· the quarter was 238,788,000 gallons, at ~d. per 1,000 gallons ; 750,000 ;gallons, at 4-1. per 1,000 gallons.

l<'RYER'S CREEK DIVISION. ··llfr. illark Amos, J11ining Surveyor and Registm'r. SLUICING. There has been a great scarcity of water for sluicing purposes during the past guarter, and a great numher of Chinese and others have only been partb.lly employed. On the banks of the Loddo\r, in the vicinity of Vauglmn, large heaps of washdirt have accumulated, so that the returns from alluvial mining are not so satisfactory as could be ·desired. PUDDLING. The puddlers have not experienced any great dmwbnck with regard to water supply, having had large quantities stored in their dams in anticipation of an unusually dry season. Some of the small companies have had no reason to complain of ill luck, their weekly returns having proved fairly remunerative.

QuARTZ Mr:'rtains great hopes of satisfactory returns. English Australian Gold Mining Company, Golden Gully.-Tl:je returns from this company for the pnst quarter are highly satisfactory, nearly 2,000 tons of quartz having been raised, realizing 4i dwts. to the ton, taken from depths ranging from 150 to 360 feet. The width of the reef varies considerably, viz., from a few inches to 7 or 8 feet. :l'ho company have not sufficient stamping power to clear away the immense quantity of quartz available for crushing purposes. Brown's claim, at Nuf!gety Gully, still continues remunerative, the ground being well prospected both north and south. The Working Miners' Association have made considerable progress in the underground worldugs, but they· have not yet succeeded in striking a payable reef. . · · The total yield from the various quartz mines for the past quarter is 1,792 ozs. 15 dwts., averaging d~>ts. to ·.the ton. HEPBUl~N DIVISION. Jfr. Tlws. Hale, llfining Registrar. Some of the result~ given in the quartz table (prefixed) are remarkably good; but in alluvial mining, owin;~ to want of water, the .yields have been less than usual. The drought having apparently now broken up, new life and vigor must result. N umcrous ventures have been started during the quarter, justified by the success of the Star Company's prospects from Bell's Reef, YandQit. 35

The :M:ornin" Lig;ht (tunnel) Quartz, Milkmaid's Reef, one mile north of Post-office, are in about 400 feet, and' have passed through a flat shoot· of payable stone; they arc driving for the vertical"lod.e. _ The Victoria Q. 'rhe Handy Freehold Quartz and Alluvial Company are down 30 feet. · · · · Russcl's Freehold Company, Porcupine Ridge, have their shaft down 134 . feet. The country is hard ·schistose matter. Great hopes r,re t>ntertained. . . . _ . . . . The deep ~utter, at Dougall's farm, Franklmford, formerly called the Lev~athau, IS agam· bemg tned by tunnelling from the creek. That a large surface of wash exists no doubt is entertained. The Rising Star Qun,rtz Company, Blind Creek, work at the 195 and 250-foot levels; the width of their reef is -9 feet dip. 'rwelve additional stamp heads are in the course of erection; also, larger boilers, engines, and pumping _.gear; and a contract has .been let for sinking the shaft 60 feet deeper. No water has been sold during the quarter, I believe.

TARADALE AND KYNETON SUBDIVISION. · Mr. S. Dorman, Mining Registrar~ Notwithstanding the yield of gold is less than that given in my last return; yet mining in this division does 111ot show signs of less activity than heretofore. The Confluence yield is 280 ozs. less, owing to the men having been -chiefly employed driving and preparing to block out. The good yields from the Royal Standard, at Lauriston, has -drawn attention to that locality. At Metcalfe, the All Nations Quar-tz Company have struck a reef, showing a little gold, but the mine hM not yet been proved by crushin~t. The United -Kingdom Quartz Company have been pro ospecting during the whole of the quarter;· they commence crushing on th<: Ist 4-P.ril:. There is· a slight decrease in the number of miners employed iu this subdivision, o.wing to the principal mines reducing their staff of workmen, ..and also-in conscq11ence of some Chinese miners having taken to other work.

TARRANGOWER DIVISION. JJ1r. Robe1·t Nanllivell, Afining Surveyor and Registrar. QUARTZ MINING. The last quarter shows a falling off in quantity of qi.iartz crushed, and yield of gold there from, owhig partly to an accident to the machinery.at Parkins' Reef Company, which caused some delay, and the eutting off by a dyke or flaw of the reef in Locke's claim, on Irish Billy's Reef. · · _ · ·· · . . -The North British mine is still yielding stone "producing 1 oz. 6 dwts. of gold per ton. The rock-boring machine has been repaired, and is now at work, and we may presume that a much larger quantity of stone will be -sent to the surface weekly. · · · Two steam-engines have been erected this quarter, and will be ready for starLing.:-one on the old Nuggety "Reef, and the other on Parkins' Reef. A contract has been let to erect one on the United Central Company's ground. Want of wnter has caused a stoppage at three crushing machines. The Prince of Wales Company have been prospecting extensively in their mine, by driving and sinking, but ·have not yet struck any payable reef. The prospects of the German Reef have improved of late, the last crushing of 29 tons yielding 36 ozs. 2 dwts. of gold. In the Old Nelson mine nothing new has yet been discovered. A party of men have been put on to break out 40 tons of stone from the old workings, as a trial crushing. ALLUVIAL MINING. _ · Three sluieing parties (Chinese) have taken advantage of the water now being pumped from the AJlianee ·Company's miue, and have started operations at Porcupine Flat. No other change of consequence has taken .place.

ST. ANDREW'S DIVISION. J1[r·. Alfred Armstrong, Alining Surveyor and Registrar. The small returns fro.m quartz this quarter i~ in consequence of the Reefton Company havin; only lately· -completed deepening their new shaft, sunk from their tunnel, which shaft is now lOO feet deeper than the last level making the total depth from the surface of 280 feet. ' ' The_ Pig-tail Com~any have just succ~eded in fitting their guides and safety-cage, and made arrangements to ~tn~t. workmg .. At Ora m s ltcef, Pan ton H1ll, the new company have made a commencement, but have not a .sufficient quant1ty of quartz at the surface to start crushiog. . T" o prospecti~g cl~ims. have been applied for. at Hoddle'~ Creek, which appear more promising than any prenously d1sc~vered m. this ne1ghborhood, the reefs helllg much thicker and showing gold more freely. . In alluvml workmgs matters are much the same as usual, excepting that the river claims have all proved fmlurcs. · · . . At the Fern-t:ee Gully, near Queenstown, som; excellent find~ have been r_eported, and several nuggets, wc1ghwg from 10 to 12 ozs., have been found, bnt the mmers are very retJCent as to the1r doings. A small rush has set in to a creek called Turner's Creek, a small branch of Sassafras Creek near the Emerald The gold found is remarkably fine and fin.ky, and, being accompanied with a quantity of titanilerous iron, can only .be saved by the md of quicksilver.

BLUE MOUSTAIN NORTH SUBDIVISION. Jlir. Graltam ]lfcPlterson, Mining Registrar. Mining i~ still in a very d?pressed state.. Sever~! quartz. claims have been taken up, for which leases have l1een np]!hed. The holders are m treaty mth m±luent1nl men m Sandhurst, Ballarat, and :M:elboume, but as yet· no mac Inn ery has been erected. - · · • Sluicing and fossicking parties have had their usual success, but many are now absent on' account of the work

ARARAT MINING DISTRICT.

ARARAT DIVISION. Mr. Tlws. Foyster, Mining Registrar. Owing t~ the sc~rcity of water, the yield of gold during the quarter has fallen off considerably, but with the advent of the wmter rams the returns may be expected to improve rapidly, several claims having paddocked their washdirt on the surface. · ' . A large compall:y has been successfully floated to test the deep wet leads beneath the basalt, on the Hopkins RIV.er, but the extensive arrangements to be carried out prevent any apparent progress in actual mining being not1ced . . In quartz mining there has been a number of trial crushings, but in no in~tance were the yields payable.

PLEASANT CREEK DIVISION. Mr. H. C. Bate, JJiining Surveyor and Registrar. The Scotchman's United Company are now engaged in driving for the reef discovered by the diamond-drill. The drill was also successful in striking another reef, in the ground of the Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 5 South Scotchman's Company, from the West Scotchman's Company's shaft. Nothing has yet been done to reach the latter stone by sinking or driving. As will be seen by the machinery table, several companies have sold off their plants, which will, to a great extent, account for the diminution in the number of miners. 1,200,000 gallons of water· were sold for mining purposes during the quarter.

BARKLY DIVISION~ Mr. H. C. Bate, .Mining Surveyor and 'Registrar. There is nothing of any importance to chronicle, relating to mining affairs in this division, during the past:. quarter. The gold yield has not been very good, but about the same number of miners work the "ground: No new find whatever has been made. No water was sold for mining purposes during the quarter.

RAGLAN DIVISION. Mr. C. W. Minchin, Mining Registrar. The mining prospects of this division have not been so favorable during the recent quarter as they were some little time back. 'l'he yield of gold from some of the principal mines at Waterloo has declined, and some few mines throughout the division have suspended operations. However,. to counterbalance matters, not a little encouragement and excitement has been aroused by gold having beeu struck in the South Victoria G. M. Company's claim, lying some distance south of those claims already on the gutter at Waterloo, and supposed to be on the same line or lead, the result of which has been that sorrie fresh applications for leases of ground lying in the immediate vicinity have been lodged.

GIPPSLAND MINING DISTRICT.

OMEO SUBDIVISION. Mr. J. Odell, JJiining Registrar. Mining in the Omeo subdivision has, during the quarter, taken a change for the better. What appears to be a payable goldfield has been discovered on a branch of the Cobungra River, heading from Mount Hotbam. An official report was made to me that a party of three men, two of whom were stripping and the other one washing with a tin dish, obtained £20 12s. worth of gold in one week. The sinking varies at present from · 2 to 6 feet deep, with heavy wash and slate bottom. The winter in this locality is .exceedingly severe; and as the snow will soon set in, it would be necessary for miners to lay in a winter's stock of provisions. The gold from this locality is worth £4 per oz. The Oriental Sluicing Company expect to· complete their new race, which is about nine miles long, in a few days ; they can then command the high portion of the auriferous ground on the Dry Hill. There has also been discovered, in a part of the subdivision which has hitherto received but little attention from prospectors, an apparently payable quartz reef; some samples of stone were shown to me having gold pretty evenly distributed. It is situated on the Dividing Range, between the head of Benambra Creek and the , and the finders are sanguine about the payable quality of the stone. A prospecting association· is being formed to further test the locality. There is no change to report .with regard to Swift's Creek. Forsyth and party have about 70 tons ready for crushing so soon as there is a supply of water.

GIBBO SUBDIVISION. Mr. C. H. Hodgson, .i'rfining Registrar. Mining matters in this subdivision are much about the same as during the previous quarter. There are still about 200 miners on Thowgla Creek, but the yield of gold is not up to expectations. Those working ·on Bullocky Creek, near Thowgla Creek, are, I believe, making wages·. Very little is doing either at Zulu or Sassafras creeks, the yield of gold being rather low, except in a few cases. 'rhe prospectors working the quartz claims at Zulu have during the quarte1· finished their small machine, which has crushed 13 tons of quartz, yielding 39 ozs. of gold. This return they consider encouraging, and are now busy pre paring for the n~xt crus~ing. Another reef h[ts been discovm·cd at Zulu Creek, which shows very good gold, the reef being about 18 mcbes w1de on· the surface. No water sold in the subdivision. 37 MITCHELL RIVER SUBDIVISION • .JJJr. John ,Grimes Peers, Mining Surveuor and.Registrar.

ALLUVIAL. ' .. Nothing worthy of special mention has occurred in this branch. The ·parties engaged seem to earn a fair livelihood from their claims and holdings under the Land Act. Most of the alluvial U)iners in this subdivision are selectors under that Act. No water has been sold for mining purposes. Gold only is searched for.

BOGGY CREEK· SUBDIVISION. .lJfr.' J .. Fletcher, llfining Registrar. There is nothing.of impor.tance to report for the past,.quar.ter. The·miners seem sa.tisfied with the small wages they procure. Some claims, I:towever, have paid well; and,a fe"~~;.fair-sized nugg€lts:have been.unearthed.. : · · A new reef· has b<;en ·discovered,: frol'jl: which a ,trial.crushing .of.quartz is being obtained .. ·

CROOKED. RIVER DIVISION• .JJ!r. Ed. Harrison, 1J1ining Regist1'ar. The only crushin~s of importance during the quarter were from the Norman by, Mount Budgee, and i\Iount Birregun mines; from the two former fair yields have been obtained, and the latter is also expected to pay. The Good Hope Tribute expired at the end of the year J880, and it has not since been taken up ; the last crushing which was obtained from the Mitchell Reef did. not pay; there is no doubt, howev~r, that could this reef be worked from a tunnel, so that the stone would not have to be raised, it would pay fairly. A new reef has been discovered near Dargo in what is called "the contact xock.". Although l;mt abOitt 4 inches wi~e, it paid all exp\)nses incurred up to the ,first crushing, and left. a small surplus :beside~. I.t. l;tas been traced .for .a c.onsiderable ,distance along t~e surface, and there is reason to believe it will be permanent. · · . , . · . · 1 . . ';!'he Palmerston claim, .near, Grant, .has been taken up again with .a .view ,to.furtj:ter prospecting.. There is a. probability that t~e.shoot.of golden, quar~z is ).).pt· hqii~ta!lt,.as, the @en who pr<:viou.sly,.worked in tjle tunnel when .driving obtained an encouraging prospect. . . . . : · . . · . In alluvial mining. matters reml\in ab9ut t)le same; a slight increase in the yield of gold for this. quarter is noticeable, owing in a measure to the line weather which has prevailed since Christll}as. . · . Gold is the only metal or mineral mined for ~n this division,; and ~o:water is s_old fqr m!ning purposes.

JERICHO DIVISION. Jlfr. R. J. lJonaldson, ;lfining Registrar. Hone of the quartz mining companies' machines have been at work during the quarter. No doubt, the want of water during the late very dry season is, to some extent, accountable for this ; however, quartz mining in this diV.isi'on is not.in a fiom:ishing condition at the present time. . . . : . •. , ·, . , . .. ·. · ;, , ,The alluyial miners ip the upper branches of the rivers. have.hpd to suspefld.work on many of their claims for 1~ant ,of wa,ter, but in the rivers_;md ·l.arger .creeks, .whe.r.e a .sufl:ici!'lnt supply could .be. obtained to work thp.ground, the claims generally hare paid' wages, while some have paid very welL · · ' No water sold.

DONNELLY'S CREEK DIVISION. 1lfr. 0. P. Whitelaw, 1lfining Surveuor and Regist1·ar. Although there have been no crnshings during the <}lk'trter, there is a decided improvement in quartz mining. The new find at Sophie's Gully, Fulton's Creek, continues to look well. The company intend erecting machinery. '.rhe Bismarck United Company have been working the new shoot of gold mentioned in my last report, and will crush in a few days. The stone carries good gold and should crush well. The Victory Company have discovered good stone in their claim, but I cannot say much about it until it is further opened. The Gnome Company are also obtaining a little gold. Shaw and party have taken up a lease on Fulton's Creek, and are driving a tunnel in the direction of an old shaft where good prospects were obtained. Gold only mined for, and no water sold.

STRINGER'S CREEK DIVISION. Mr. W. M. Smitlz, 1Uining Registrar.

QUARTZ, The quarter just closed may be described as a quiet one. Thet·e have been very few new discoveries of· importance, and very few claims abandoned. Miners and capitalists seem contenl; with their prospects of future success. There are at present a greater number of progressive mines at work in the division than there have been for many years. The yields from the Long Tunnel Company have been fully up to the averarre, The shareholders of the Long Tunnel Extended Company expect to cut some rich stone in a few months. " ALLUVIAL, River working has been very successful during the summer, some of the men following this branch of mining earning from £5 to £6 per week, but as the winter sets in they will have to withdraw to the banks and spurs,. which are not often SQ rich as the bed of the river. No. 86. D 38 RUSSELL'S CREEK DIVISION. Mr. C. H. Willia~s, Mining Registrar• .Mining in this division is still very dull, the great complaint being want of water. Rain has, however, f

BENDOC SUBDIVISION. Mr. John Nicol, Mining Registrar• . · Very little change has taken place in mining matters during the past quarto:- in any part of this subdivision, only that a new enterprise has been organized, in the shape of a puddliug machine, but with what success is at present unknown to me. Tho place of operation is at Back Creek, distant about four miles from Bendoc, where, it appears, the clay bottom, in places, cannot be sufficiently puddled to extract the gold, and I am informed, as a consequence, that much of the gold is lost in the tailings. 'fhe ground, generally speaking, in this subdivision is good tor sluicing. · Several parties have left here for the Mount Poole rush, in the Albert district, while others have arrived from the Temora mines, so that the number of miners is much the same as last quarter. · Quartz mining is still in abeyance. · No water has been sold; and no metal other than gold searched for.

TARWIN SUBDIVISION. Mr. H. .!tf. JJfurphy, Mining Registrar. During the quarter the three largest claims have been apparently idle. The Prospectors Company have been repairing and shifting their machinery, the Dan. O'Connell Company have been repairing their machinery and forming a new party, and the Golden Fleece and African's United· Company have been sinking slowly through the rock. On the 26th March they struck a reef at 110 feet, underlying to the east and. dipping to the south; the stone shows gold freely, and promises, from appearances, to pay very welL They have every indication of being in close proximity to a larger reef, the . one struck averaging only 9 inches. It is intended to siuk further, in the hope of striking a larger body of stone; and, in any case, to drive for the reef struck, when they reach the proper level. · 'l'he want Cif water is much felt in many of the smaller claims ; but the weather seems to have broken, and better anticipations may be entertained for next quarter. Nothing new has been done with refereuce to tin or lime. No water sold.

TRARALGON SUBDIVISION. Mr. C. Denis, Mining Registrar. In the early part of the pastJquarter,-during the months of January and February, mining in this subdivision. was at a standstill, owing to the continued dry weather. Lately mining has taken a turn for the better, a good number of men being employed· in that branch of industry, who seem to be making fair wages since the late min set in. __...;_. No water sold.
