Conference Joining Instructions

All conference sessions will be held at Chancellors Hotel and Conference Centre. Chancellors Hotel is part of the University of and is located on the University’s Campus, to the south of the city. Getting to the Conference Venue

By Plane Manchester International Airport is approximately 5 miles from Chancellors. The quickest route from the airport is by taxi (approximately 20 minutes). If you wish to take the train from the airport there is a 24-hour service which runs 7 days a week, every 15 minutes during peak times and goes direct to Piccadilly Train Station. From the station either take a taxi or take the short walk to Piccadilly Bus Station and catch one of the many buses that follow the route to Road, Fallowfield (see below).

By Train Long distance trains arrive at Manchester Piccadilly Station. Either take a taxi (approximately 15 minutes) or take a five minute walk to Bus Station. Short distance rail service departs from Manchester Road Station and Manchester Station.

By Bus Take a bus numbered 41, 42 or 43 from Piccadilly Gardens Bus Station to , Fallowfield. Walk to the junction with Moseley Road and turn left. At the next set of traffic lights turn left into Chancellors Way and the hotel is on your left, opposite the Armitage Sports Centre.

By Road If you are travelling using a Sat Nav, please use the postcode M14 6ZT rather than the conference address.

From the South

Leave the M6 at Junction 19 (Knutsford), turn right onto the A56 and follow signs for . At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit for the M56 (Manchester). Take right hand lanes to the end of the motorway and join the A5103 - keep forward (signposted Manchester ). At the 5th set of traffic lights turn right onto Wilbraham Road (A6010 signposted Sheffield). At the 4th set of traffic lights turn left onto Chancellors Way. Chancellors Hotel is situated on the left hand side opposite the Armitage Sports Centre.

From the East

At the end of the M67 turn left onto the M60 (Stockport). Leave the M60 at Junction 5 and join the A5103 - keep forward (signposted ). At the 5th set of lights turn right onto Wilbraham Road (A6010 signposted Sheffield). At the 4th set of traffic lights turn left onto Chancellors Way. Chancellors Hotel is situated on the left hand side opposite the Armitage Sports Centre.

From Scotland and the North

From the M61 join the M60 following signs for Manchester Airport. Then join the M602 (signposted Salford). Follow signs for Manchester Airport onto the A57. At the roundabout take the 3rd exit (A5103), after approximately one and a half miles take a left at the traffic lights into Wilbraham Road (A6010). At the 4th set of traffic lights, turn left into Chancellors Way. Chancellors Hotel is situated on the left hand side opposite the Armitage Sports Centre. Accommodation

Manchester and the Surrounding Area

For those staying in Manchester beyond the dates of the conference, some details of places of interest have been provided below. Two members of the conference organising team, Alexander Hall and Stephen Jones, are Manchester residents and would be happy to provide advice about places to eat and visit in the city.

Museums and Galleries Central Manchester hosts the , the Museum of Science and Industry and the People’s History Museum. To the east of the city is Media City UK, which is the northern base of the BBC and other UK television networks as well as the site of the Imperial War Museum North and Theatre, which hosts a permanent exhibition of Lowry’s work. Just over a mile north of the conference centre is the , founded in the nineteenth century with a donation from the engineer John Whitworth, for whom Chancellors Hotel was originally built in 1850.

Historical sites Historical sites include the Rutherford Building, named after the scientist who first split the atom, the site of the fifth Pan-African Congress at All Saints, the site of the Peterloo Massacre in 1819, and Chetham’s Library, which was founded in 1653 and contains Karl Marx and Frederick Engels’ ‘favourite desk’.

Around Manchester Eight miles south of Chancellors Hotel is , a Tudor manor house dating back to the fourteenth century. Three miles further south is Lyme Park, a mansion and estate on the edge of the Peak District. Toward Manchester Airport you can also find Quarry Bank, a working cotton mill built in 1784 and one of the best preserved textile mills of the Industrial Revolution.
