PAGE 2 Te Awamutu Courier, Tuesday, March 8, 2005 Who pays? - the burning question By Grant Johnston Firefi ghters in the district have spent many hours battling blazes on Pirongia Mountain over the past week. The fi rst callout came on Wednesday afternoon, after a scrub burnoff on a Hanning Road farm got out of control. Pirongia Fire Force and Te Awamutu Fire Bri- gade responded. They battled the fi re as best they could, but strong winds were carrying the fi re into inacces- sible areas for the appliances and Otorohanga District Council (in whose district the blaze began) called in helicopters with monsoon buckets. Refi lling their buckets from a farmer’s pond, the two helicopter pilots tackled the rapidly spreading fi re - they were on the job until after dark as were the ground crews. A contract forestry crew from Tokoroa was called in on Thursday to turn the burned scrub over. But then about mid-day Saturday a swirling wind picked up embers and spread them beyond the burned area, igniting fi res again and requiring both the fi refi ghting crews and helicopters to be called back into action. Pirongia Fire Force returned on Sunday to damp down more hot spots. WET BLANKET: a helicopter is used to douse Wednesday’s fire on Otorohanga District Council rural fi re offi cer PIrongia Mountain. 067053BD Ian Gooden says the estimated cost of fi ghting the blaze is expected to be in the region of $35,000 to $40,000. The farmer who started the blaze will be sent the account, but he in turn has public liability insurance. Mr Gooden says the farmer showed a responsi- ble attitude - putting in fi re breaks and contacting Waipa and Otorohanga fi re offi cers to discuss the fi re with them beforehand. But the wind carried the fi re outside the planned burnoff (and from Otorohanga District, where there is no closed fi re season, to Waipa, where there is a fi re ban in place). Pirongia Fire Force station manager, David Bowler says their volunteers spent about 20 hours up fi ghting the mountain fi res. “Our guys are pretty tired, but on the other hand it’s been a valuable exercise.” Mr Bowler says the Fire Force’s four wheel drive tanker really proved its worth, accessing parts of the fi re through farm tracks inaccessible to other appliances. Te Awamutu volunteer fi refi ghters attended the Wednesday blaze virtually straight after they had SMOKESCREEN: smoke from Wednesday afternoon’s fire covered attended the serious bus crash at Tihiroa.
