About

Robogals is a student-run worldwide organization with the motto “Bringing Engineering to Girls, for Today and the Future.” Founded in 2008 at University, , Robogals has continued to reduce the gender gap present within the engineering field through free interactive workshops. Only about 10-15% of the engineering labour force worldwide are women, and this lack of representation makes the case for Robogals clear.

To increase female participation in engineering fields, Robogals seeks to reduce the stigma that science, technology and math are ‘for boys’. By hosting free workshops focused on female attendance for children of ages 6-17, we can correct these misconceptions at an early age. Robogals allows girls to take the initiative to reveal their own capabilities and interests through fun and interactive robotics workshops. Today, Robogals is present and growing in Australia, the , , the United States, and . There are currently 33 university chapters and counting!

Robogals Global organizes an annual Seminar Inducting New Executives (SINE) for each region to introduce new chapter executives to the organization, as well as share innovate chapter practices. The next North American SINE will be held in January 2018.

About Robogals Queens

Founded in January 2014, Robogals Queen’s Chapter is a young club at Queen’s University ratified under the Alma Mater Society and the Engineering Society.

In collaboration with the Limestone District School Board, many private schools, as well as local outreach groups including Girls Inc. and the Boys and Girls Club of Kingston, Robogals Queen’s delivers robotics and engineering workshops where young girls learn about mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering, but above all, their passion and capabilities in these fields. These workshops are run at no cost to the participants.

Robogals Queen’s chapter is composed of a twelve- membered executive team. Currently, the chapter has over 80 volunteers and has taught over 500 girls. In 2016, we hosted 37 free workshops and reached over 250 new students. In addition to, last year we hosted our first ever Roboday. In the coming year, we plan to develop an advanced robotics program for high school students, our reach to less accessible, high need areas around Kingston, as well as collect geographical statistics to track our impact.

Our Goals For 2017-2018

For the upcoming 2017- 2018 year Robogals Queens has several ambitious goals we hope to achieve as a robogals chapter.

Robogals Queens would like to reach out to indigenous students to further promote more students to consider STEM. We are hoping to host more frequent on site workshops in schools outside of the Kingston area. Moreover, Robogals Queens will also be hosting another Roboday.

We must elevate our workshop material to have more unique and innovative workshop experiences. Robogals is hoping to purchase five new tablets this year to improve the experience of the workshop.

Lastly, the Queens chapter is planning to send all twelve executives to the SINE Conference in January 2018. The Sine Conference is a rewarding and inspiring experience that we are hoping to attend.

“SINE was an amazing way to bond within our chapter, as well as with Robogals chapters from all over North America. Being able to share ideas and strategies with others, has inspired us all to find more ways to reach out to girls in our own community. I walked away from the conference, eager to run more workshops, expand our curriculum, and increase the presence of Robogals, not just within Queen’s, but within Canada."
