  • No Science in $Cientology About Says It All
    ¡ ¢¤£ ¥ ¡ £ ¦¨§ © Scientology books are sold as scientific. For example: What the cult calls Book One, titled Dianetics The Modern Science of Mental Health. There's also A History of Man, billed by L. Ron Hubbard (the Founder of Scientology) as "a cold-blooded and factual account of your last sixty trillion years". However, there is no scientific validation of the contents in these books. Yes, No Science in $cientology about says it all. Despite the fact that Dianetics and Scientology together are nearly 50 years old, there has never been any scientific verification of the principles that the Scientology cult teaches. In fact, the only two experiments in existence to address Scientology principles have shown that these principles do not hold up under experimental evaluation. Of course, this may not be surprising - the first time Hubbard wrote about Dianetics, it was published in Astounding Science Fiction Magazine (the May 1950 issue), not a scientific journal. You can see the cover of the Astounding magazine in question here: http://www.primenet.com/~cultxpt/cos.htm The first experiment was Dianetic Therapy: An Experimental Evaluation by Harvey Jay Fischer. This study was submitted in 1953 to Fischer's sponsoring committee as part of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy in Education he was pursuing.     SHOULD GERMANY STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE OCTOPUS? FREEDOM OF RELIGION AND THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY IN GERMANY AND THE UNITED STATES Religion hides many mischiefs from suspicion.' I. INTRODUCTION Recently the City of Los Angeles dedicated one of its streets to the founder of the Church of Scientology, renaming it "L. Ron Hubbard Way." 2 Several months prior to the ceremony, the Superior Administrative Court of Miinster, Germany held that Federal Minister of Labor Norbert Bluim was legally permitted to continue to refer to Scientology as a "giant octopus" and a "contemptuous cartel of oppression." 3 These incidents indicate the disparity between the way that the Church of Scientology is treated in the United States and the treatment it receives in Germany.4 Notably, while Scientology has been recognized as a religion in the United States, 5 in Germany it has struggled for acceptance and, by its own account, equality under the law. 6 The issue of Germany's treatment of the Church of Scientology has reached the upper echelons of the United States 1. This paper examines how the Church of Scientology profits by selling spiritual goods to the modern neoliberal consumer. To accumulate data, I conducted interviews and participated in various rituals at the Church of Scientology in St. Paul, Minnesota. I outline and examine the data in four sections: the initiation process of the latent member, their consumption patterns in the Church, social interactions between members, and how these interactions bridge the Church into the public arena. I conclude that the Church is a market institution that promotes neoliberal ideology. Seine pittoresken Freunde waren Ranger, Cowboys und ein indianischer Medizinmann. „L. Ron Hubbard fand das Leben eines jungen Rangers sehr angenehm. Man verbrachte lange Tage mit Reiten, dem Zähmen von Wildpferden und der Jagd nach Coyoten; er unternahm so die ersten Schritte als Forscher. Denn es war in Montana, als er seine erste Begegnung mit einer fremden Kultur hatte – den Schwarzfuß (Pikuni) Indianern. Er wurde Blutsbruder der Pikuni und schrieb über sie in seiner ersten Veröffentlichung Buckskin Brigades. Im Alter von 10 Jahren kehrte er zu seiner Familie zurück. Sein Vater, alarmiert durch den offensichtlichen Mangel an formaler Ausbildung, begann sofort ein intensives Bildungsprogramm mit ihm, um die Zeit wieder gutzumachen, die er in der Wildnis von Montana „verloren“ hatte.

Ron Hubbard who drew from psychological theories (called “Dianetics”) and a mixture of ideas developed from Eastern religious philosophies.1 Scientology calls itself “a religious philosophy in its highest meaning.”2 The Scientology religion promises “workable answers to the problems people face in their lives”: “It is concerned with nothing less than the full rehabilitation of the thetan (see below), to increase spiritual awareness, native capabilities and certainty of his own immortality.” Scientology claims that its axioms define “the underlying causes and principles of reality as we know it, and thus unlock the very riddle of existence.” 3 According to L. Ron Hubbard, “Scientology has accomplished the goal of religion expressed in Man’s written history, the freeing of the soul with wisdom.”4 Founder: Lafayette Ronald (L. Ron) Hubbard (1911-86) Statistics: Estimates of the number of members and adherents vary widely. One estimate: 5-6 million worldwide History: Lafayette Ronald Hubbard, born in Tilden, Nebraska in 1911, was the founder of Scientology. While the details of Hubbard’s life have been in dispute, it is claimed that he traveled widely during his youth (his father a career Navy man), acquainting himself with Beijing magicians, Tibetan lamas, Mongolian bandits, Pygmy huntsmen and shamans from Borneo. He returned to the U.S. in 1929, completed his education, and was accepted as a student of mathematics and engineering at George Washington University (though he never graduated).
