A PRESIDENTIAL TRIP took (from left to right) Shy Kramer, Janet Kramer, Adrienne Singer and Arthur Singer to Texas, where they traveled to San Antonio, Austin and College Station to explore the libraries of presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and George H. W. Bush. The four Hunters Run members are attempting to see as many presidential libraries as possible.

A MEDITERRANEAN CRUISE took Anna & Paul Wilson and Susan & Bill Kuncewitch to Cartagena, Barcelona, Majorca, Corsica, Portofino and Rome.

Jerusalem is an absolutely fascinating city,” she adds.

REVISITING THE “LAND OF MILK AND HONEY”— Diane and Michael Soroka traveled to Tel Aviv to attend the wedding of Michael’s cousin’s daughter, where they also had the pleasure of attending a Henna Ceremony— a symbolic way to shower the bride and groom with what they hope will be many years of protection, health and fertility. Guests wore long caftans and fez headdresses and also had their palms smeared with red Henna dye. “It was truly a joyous occasion,” says Diane.

“GO WEST” was a last minute decision by Barbara and Ira Kahner to take a six day bus tour which started in Phoenix, Arizona, and ended in Las Vegas, Nevada. This “very spontaneous trip was a wonderful experience,” they say. For the first time, they saw close-up the beauty of the Grand Canyon, as well as Sedona, Arizona, Lake Powell, Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park in Utah. “We hiked, we ate, and enjoyed nature.”

10 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019 Hunters Run Country Club Flying High A Love Affair with Planes

SHE FLEW HER OWN PLANE to Martha’s Vineyard, landed it on the beach and slept there that night. She flew cross country. She flew to football games and other sporting events. She flew her eager, ready-to-go, 70-year-old mom, to a family outing. She flew friends and family and flew solo. And often she flew to West Palm Beach Airport to vacation at Hunters Run. ARLENE SPIESMAN has an instrument-rated pilot’s license, as did her husband, Cliff. Their first plane was a Cessna Cherokee, then a Mooney Retractable that comfortably seated five. “Flying is wonderful; you’re in a world by yourself. Once you do it, you become addicted. Flying and airplanes became part of our family. Clifford and I took flying lessons in our hometown of Kingston, New York. After my first lesson, I didn’t feel good, but I went back. Then—I was hooked. “Pilots have to be methodical and meticulous. You always had to check the plane thoroughly, even clean out the bird nests which were frequently found in the engine. To be good at the job you have to be confident. I was not afraid. Once, upon landing, the gears did not work properly. My wheels would not go down. I had to belly land but I did so and landed safely. You know, I even flew over the Bermuda Triangle!” Arlene, a skier and avid golfer, had become a besotted flier, fulfilling a lifetime dream. Her hometown newspaper, the Kingston Freeman, wrote this to Arlene, “Get back out of airways and come back to the fairways.” Arlene also served as chairperson of The Hudson Arnold and Viviane have been at Hunters Run for Valley Chapter of Lady Pilots, while she and Cliff owned and ran Spiesman Speciality Bakery. “We had the best rugelach,” she declares. nine years. New practice balls from Titleist have been ordered for the driving ranges and Short Game Area and as soon as they arrive they will be put into play on both driving ranges, which will both be open for the season sometime in October. New bag stands have arrived for the driving ranges and now include a towel and cup holder! We’re looking forward to a great season ahead. Welcome back to all of our Snowbirds!

PRO’S CORNER For those of you who play golf in the Northeast during the summer months, it can be problematic when transitioning from the northern bent grass, rye, and fescue back to the Bermuda grass for the winter months – especially around the greens. The difficulty is that most often times the golf ball sits “down” in the Bermuda rough around the greens and does not allow for clean strike on the back of the golf ball, so our technique needs to be adjusted. Pitching – when pitching the ball out of the Bermuda rough think of playing a mini-bunker shot. Play the ball slightly forward of center in your stance with an open clubface and be sure to take the club back a little more vertical with a slight wrist hinge – this will allow for the club to drop vs. “sweep” through the hitting area, allowing the golf ball to come out of the rough and land softer on the green.

Pool schedules for the upcoming season have already been mailed to you. They will also be available online at the Hunters Run website www.huntersrun.net. Please fill them out and return them by email, snail mail, or just hand them in to the Pro Shop. New schedules start November 1, 2019. Our league teams are cranking up in September and October for the fall season —both tennis and pickleball. Hope you all are ready; please check with your captains for start dates. New fences have been installed on the pickleball courts for the safety of the players and to keep the balls in the respective courts. All the clay courts have been resurfaced and ready for the new season, so all we need now is players.

QUICK TIP on your volleys that I want you to work on: Rather than swinging or swatting at the ball, have a firm wrist and let the ball rebound off the strings, use your legs to move the racquet through the ball. Also, next time you are watching tennis on TV, start analyzing the players’ games and figure why they are winning or losing, because you will find yourself in that same situation in your matches.

16 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019 Hunters Run Country Club BRIDGE

BRIDGE COMMITTEE Looking Forward By Marilyn Ross, Bridge Committee We look forward to our northern Bridge friends’ return to Hunters Run. Our duplicate games, although smaller, were continued during the summer months. Good luck to our new Men’s team, headed by Alan Zabronsky, that was added to the Bridge league. We are fortunate to offer educational programs for all levels of bridge expertise and are planning to have three courses this coming season. The cost of each of the six-lesson sessions is $100 per student.

Bridge Lessons Offered Intermediate/Advanced lessons: Keith Hanson will teach intermediate/advanced students all elements of the game. Lessons are Wednesday mornings at 9:00 AM and are offered in two separate sessions of six lessons each starting November 6, 2019. Previous students have found his classes exceptional, and this year should continue his outstanding track record. Beginner /Advanced Beginner lessons: Naomi Fruitman will teach two separate groups of six lessons each. Beginner lessons are Wednesday mornings at 9:00 AM starting November 19, and Advanced Beginner lessons (a continuation of last year’s extremely successful program designed for members who have some understanding of the Outings game) will be on Thursdays at 9:00 AM starting November 20. Wednesday, September 11 Wiener Museum Outing REACH Tournament Depart HR 9:15 am The Regional Event At Club House (REACH) gave ACBL (American Friday, September 13 League) members a chance to win gold or red points at their Bluesman - Ray Cashman local clubs during regularly scheduled games versus having to go to Art Garage, Delray tournaments. It cost only $30 for the entire week. REACH uses the average of your two highest session scores for the week to award overall gold/red . Section tops were also awarded after each session. This is a good opportunity to earn Gold/Red points. The top award can be 30 Gold masterpoints and approximately 25% of the field will win Gold/Red. I took advantage of this opportunity and earned 7.5 gold masterpoints. There were 2,247 participants. New Master Rankings Club Master: Charles Ross 70 Percent Game or Better: Lenore Strauss, Annette Yadoff, Phyllis Dubesky, Dan Teitelbaum, Marcia Teitelbaum, Renee Blank, Cynthia Silk We like to list our members when they attain a new master level or when they earn a 70% game or better. Please notify me at 375-8949 when that occurs. See Ya’ at the Bridge Table

Hunters Run Country Club SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019 17 FITNESS Fit&Tr im By John Freeland, Director of Fitness

I try to enjoy life to the fullest and if there is anything I laugh the most about, it’s me. That being said—

SAVE On May 31, I participated in the Marathon Golf that took place at Hunters Run to benefit many charities to help kids in need. I should have known having the word “marathon” was a warning that I’m getting in over my head. I was teamed up with Gary Tschaepe and we were scheduled to tee off first. Now, the last time I played golf (real golf, THE not miniature golf) was back in college—I graduated in 1994. John Oyler, who I think was setting me up, was kind enough to lend me some golf clubs. I went to the Starter’s Booth 10 minutes before Gary and I were to tee off. The Starter told me to go to the 1st hole on DATE the East Course. I asked him “where is the East Course?” Needless to say, they called a Ranger to lead the way. There, I found Gary who instantly noticed I was holding my golf bag beside me in the golf cart, hugging it as if were my first date. When Gary asked, I told him I didn’t know how to strap the bag into the back. I think at that moment Gary realized what he was into. Actually, when he asked me where my golf balls were, I replied “don’t you have them?” ••• He had the Ranger get a BOX of balls. So, the first swing I took, I missed. “Practice swing,” I told Gary. Well, it didn’t go any better from there. Gary would tell me which clubs to use. I remember from college which clubs were “woods” and which were “irons,” but when Gary suggested I use a sand wedge, I didn’t know. I was too embarrassed to ask. So I just winged it and grabbed a club that was somewhere between a putter and driver. Might as well tell me “sandwich.” At least I know what that is—I probably would hit the ball much better too. By the way, as a trainer, I can count up to 15; didn’t help at any of the holes. As funny as that might sound, I have realized people might have similar experiences when they go to the gym. The March 3 last time they stepped into a gym was a few years ago. They look around the gym and things might ring a bell or look familiar, but they don’t know the difference between a recumbent bike and an upright bike. They are not sure which bike is the better to use for them (there are actually four different types of bikes, each for different needs and capabilities.) There is Fitness staff there to help, but they are too embarrassed to ask. They are not sure how much weight to use or what the seat height should be, so they just wing it. Just as someone needs direction with the game of golf to improve, the same applies to exercise, in order to reach your 2020 goals. We are here to help you step up to the plate. Speaking of “step up,” Hunters Run will be holding its annual Step Up to Wellness event If you don’t know Tuesday, March 3, 2020. This event will start off with a 5K walk followed by a grab-n-go where the Fitness breakfast of healthy foods. The day will be full of exercise classes, speakers and vendors all Center is ask, any of which pertain to helping you with your fitness levels. The proceeds generated will go to employee and he or benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. she can lead you there.
