The following information applies to ALL students registered in the YOUTH PROGRAM (AGES 6+).

If your student is a Toddler or Circus Kinder, please refer to the TD/CK Cheat Sheet. COSTUMES

When possible, label ALL costume pieces, including shoes and accessories, with the performer’s first initial and full last name.

Costumes and Costume Hangers Each costume will be labeled on the hanger with the performer’s name and act, and it will be color-coded to indicate which performances the costume will be used. After each act, it is the responsibility of the performer to hang his/her/their costume on the correct hanger. Please do not put costumes in the lockers or take them home during any part of the show’s run. Hangers are the property of CJ and should NOT be taken home with your costumes. Costume Repairs If a costume needs to be repaired, a performer should take the time to show the costume staff what has happened. The staff will try to get the costume ready for the next performance. When Can Costumes Be Removed from the Building? Students performing in the purple show must leave their costumes in the building until May 5 (after the last performance is complete – costumes may not be taken at intermission). All other performers must leave their costumes in the building until pick up becomes available on Tuesday, May 8. This may seem a little inconvenient but it prevents a performer from accidentally taking someone else’s costume home. It also allows our staff time to organize everything for pick up. All costumes will be in the lobby area Tuesday, May 8 through Friday, May 11. Costumes are moved into storage after the second week of summer session, so please be sure to pick up your costumes no later than Saturday, May 26. Shoes Select acts require shoes and are the responsibility of each individual performer. If shoes are only used for one show team, students can attach them to that costume's hanger. Bags will be made available to those who choose this option. However, students in more than one show team need to make sure they bring their shoes for the next appropriate performance. Please wear street shoes and change into performance shoes when you arrive. When and where can I purchase shoes? For shoe ordering requirements, please refer to the spring show shoe flyer on the Spring Show Announcements tab in the Family Portal of the CJ website (copies are also available at the front desk). Shoes should be purchased well before show time; the discount at Grand Jete is only available until March 26. Fishnets and Accessories Select acts require fishnets, usually based on the design of the costume (ie: costumes that require bare legs, etc). All accessories are hung with the performer’s costume for the run of the show. Just like shoes, the fishnets may be needed for more than one costume and for more than one show color. Just like with shoes, when fishnets are needed for more than one show color, it is the responsibility of the performer to hold on to the fishnets and not store them with a costume from a different show color. Do I Need to Order My Own Fishnets? No. Circus Juventas orders all fishnets and pairs them with the appropriate costume. Please note: families are billed during the spring session for these additional costs, where applicable. What If I Already Have Fishnets? Previously used fishnets must be approved for use by the Artistic Department. Please contact Gemma for more information: [email protected]. If approved, you will be responsible for bringing your fishnets to the first dress rehearsal. Our performance season would not be possible without PARENT VOLUNTEERS. The Spring Celebration Performances alone require 781 volunteer shifts over the course of two weeks. PLEASE consider signing up TODAY! Simply go to SignUpGenius.com search for “Circus Juventas 2018 Spring Celebration Performances,” For more information, please contact Becky at [email protected].

TECH/DRESS REHEARSAL (FOR TD/CK & YOUTH)

Yellow Show: Blue Show: Purple Show: Monday, April 23 (4:00 p.m.) Tuesday, April 24 (4:00 p.m.) Tuesday, May 1 (4:00 p.m.) Schedule (Tech/Dress Only) REMINDERS! 1. Show Meeting and Announcements  Please be on time! (4:00 p.m.) 2. Toddlers  The parking lot will be full! Plan extra time 3. Circus Kinders to find parking and walk to the arena. 4. Toddlers and Circus Kinders are dismissed  You must attend the pre-show meeting. 5. 1st Half Walk Around (Bow/Wave)  Come prepared! Pack non-messy snacks, 6. Acts #3 to Intermission in show order homework, quiet games, water, etc. 7. 2nd Half Walk Around (Bow/Wave)  These are CLOSED rehearsals! Only 8. Acts after intermission in show order parents/guardians may be present.  Performers are dismissed BY THEIR COACH at the end of their last act. SHOW DAY PROCEDURES (YOUTH) Makeup Application Schedule Please check the makeup application schedule (provided in addition to this packet at the front desk) and arrive on time (or early!) for your scheduled time. Our volunteers cannot guarantee makeup application for performers that miss their assigned time. Performers are responsible for their own makeup remover. Hair Plan to have your performer arrive with his/her/their hair done. Long hair needs to be pulled back. (Ponytails, buns, or braids work well!) We do NOT have volunteers to help with hair. Cover-Up Every performer must have a costume cover-up (oversized, black t-shirt to wear over costumes). This cover-up should be worn at all times except when performing, during which time it should be stored in the performer’s bag. Please label the tag with the performer’s first initial and last name.

Food and Water Bottle Plan to eat before arriving at circus. No greasy, messy, or fast food is allowed in the arena or backstage. Healthy, non-messy snacks and a water bottle (labeled with the performer’s name) are encouraged. Performers that eat backstage are responsible for cleaning up after themselves. Please do not bring food items containing peanuts – some of our students have severe allergies to peanut products. Performers will ONLY be allowed to visit concessions prior to and immediately following intermission. Supplies Bag or Backpack We recommend all performers bring a bag backstage (preferably one that zips or ties shut). This bag should be used to store healthy snacks, a water bottle, street clothes, cover-ups, blankets, and quiet activities (books, cards, etc). Everything should be labeled with the performer’s first initial and last name. Equipment Etiquette In order to maintain a safe and orderly backstage area, we ask that all students abide by the following:  All unicycles must be hung up in the designated area. Backstage volunteers have the right to confiscate unicycles ridden in the building once the pre-show meeting starts.  No juggling backstage.  Safety belts must be returned to the stage manager or tunnel runner after the act in which it was worn.  Rosin socks and athletic tape will be available in the tunnel. Use only what you need!

Cleaning Schedule All performers in the second half of the show, ages 11 and older, are required to help clean the arena following performances. Please check the cleaning schedule (located at the front desk a week or so before the shows) and make plans accordingly. Note: cleaning after the final purple show includes more students than the other nights in order to help convert the building from “show mode.” This may mean that some students on the purple show may have to clean after more than one performance. 3

SHOW DAY PROCEDURES (continued)

Departing from the Circus Performers with acts only in the first half of the show are expected to leave during intermission, after the first- half bow. Performers will need a ticket to join friends or family in the seating units. (Please change out of costumes before leaving the backstage area.) Parents should pick up students who are 10 and younger from the backstage curtain by the respective locker rooms (boys at the north curtain and girls at the south curtain). First-half performers whose parents are volunteering are allowed to wait backstage for the remainder of the show but cannot join their parent(s) in the volunteer duties/area. Performers with acts in the second half are expected to stay for the final bow.

During tech/dress rehearsals and performances in the past, Circus Juventas provided updates via our Twitter account for CJ families to track which acts were currently performing and which acts were coming up next (information posted did not include student names). These tweets helped parents not in the arena know when their performer would be finished and ready for pick up. We hope to continue to provide this useful service but will need volunteers to take this job for each tech/dress rehearsal and performance. Check this position out as part of the volunteer positions listed. PERFORMER AND PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES

 Performers must arrive on schedule for their makeup times! That means arriving early enough to first get into costume before reporting to the multipurpose room for makeup application.  Pre-show meetings start promptly at 6:00 p.m. for evening performances or 12:00 p.m. for matinees. All performers are expected to be present at the pre-show meetings in their costumes with the exception of Toddlers/Kinders.  Remember that the volunteers are volunteers and are here to help with the show, so please say please and thank you to them. This show cannot happen without them.  A performer’s costume is their responsibility. Please hang it up on the hanger with the correct label and place it on the rack in the correct spot, with shoes and/or fishnets in the accessory bag. Ask a volunteer backstage if help is needed!  Eat meals outside of the CJ building; performers may bring an appropriate non-messy snack if needed, so long as it is cleaned up when finished. Water bottles with the performer’s name on it is encouraged!  Leave valuable items at home! We do NOT recommend bringing items such as iPads backstage.  Ushers may ask us to turn off Wi-Fi during the ticket scanning process (pre-show beginning 30 minutes prior to performance). Please keep this in mind when planning backstage activities.  Performers and parents should make pick-up arrangements before the show.  Cell phones must be silenced during the shows!  No friends, siblings, or parents without volunteer name tags are allowed backstage.

Spring Show Teams 2018 Please note: We understand that our students and their families have very busy lives. We try to accommodate as many conflicts with the show dates as we can, and while we cannot honor all requests, we take school trips into high consideration.
