2 SITE FESTIVAL 2018 Welcome

A warm welcome to Open Studios 2018

It’s hard to say exactly why I enjoy visiting artists’ studios so much. Obviously I’m hoping for something to rub off. But then there’s the journey to get there, the discovery of new lanes and strangely obscure backwaters, which is like a little pilgrimage to a shrine.

I think probably my favourite studios include Cézanne’s in Aix where you can see scattered around all the objects familiar from the still lifes. That funny little cherub. Zadkine’s studio in Paris, Morandi’s little flat in Bologna, Paul Grellier’s ironwork barn one summer up in Bisley. It’s something about personality, too. Books on shelves. Kitchen utensils. The view from the garden. Aimee Lax, SVA studio artist, photo Nigel Noyes

Open Studios is a great way to And, finally, you can put William Morris’s golden rule to the test: Have meet artists, find out more about nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to the ideas behind their work and the be beautiful. techniques they use. Don’t forget, you can buy art works directly from artists! SITE FESTIVAL 2018 5 Places in Drift Valerie Van Leersum, resident artist

Valerie Van Leersum, an artist from NDSM in Amsterdam, will be our resident artist for the SITE Festival Open Studios. Valerie Van Leersum has been creating a body of work, since 2002, driven by her search for the meaning of the concept of home, and the relationship between the ground and identity. For this she uses objects, text, audio, collages and photography in order to convey her work in a fruitful and specific way. The work moves between the ‘factual’ history on one hand and the subjective experience on the other, between documentary and imaginary. In 2007 Valerie Van Leersum built her studio at the former NDSM shipyard in Amsterdam. Inspired by the ideas of artist Constant Nieuwenhuys, this yard has been turned into the largest
