California College of – We were invited by Dr. Marc Halpern, Founder President of California College of Ayurveda (https://www.ayurvedacollege.com) in Grass Valley, near Sacramento. Dr. Marc Halpern is one of our students from seven days residential program held in Santa Fe, in 1993 and afterwards he sponsored many of our visits for learning Ayurveda from us (http://www.ayurvedacollege.com/college/dr-marc-halpern).

Dr. Halpern is graduate and has studied Ayurveda. Chiropractic is form of alternative not known in India. D. D. Palmer founded chiropractic in the 1890’s, and his son B. J. Palmer helped to expand it in the early 20th century. Chiropractic is now well established and recognized in the United States, Canada and Australia. It is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of unproven mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine, under the belief that such a disorder affects general health via the nervous system. The main chiropractic treatment technique involves manual , especially therapy (SMT), manipulations of other joints and soft tissues. The "specific focus of chiropractic practice" is to correct chiropractic subluxation (vertebral joint misalignment).

The California College of Ayurveda was established in Feb. 1995. This is the biggest Ayurveda College in United States. The college has three separate buildings for academic teaching, Panchkarma section and for outdoor and indoor patients. They also have nice Ayurvedic herbal garden which has been funded by American Organic India Company. (https://organicindiausa.com)

In June 1995 we first visited the CCA for giving elective lectures for their students. Elective lectures are those topics which are not included in the regular syllabus. I was given the topic of Nidan or Diagnosis and Dr. Sunanda talked on Ayurvedic concept of Nutrition. After the lectures, Mamata Lamderman who was student in our class invited us to her home in Redwood Forest. She had small studio there and we gave consultations to few patients.

We visited this Institute in May1996 as Chief guest for the Graduation ceremony and in June1998. We were again invited as the chief guest for graduation ceremony on April 2012.

Health counseling -In California, many patients came to us for health counseling, at the Institute of Dr. Halpern. Each patient was given 40 minutes of time for consultation. We remember Mr. Nat amongst all the patients we have consulted because of his typical name. When we saw the list of patients for morning consultations, we thought that Mr. Nat must be some American individual. When he came for consultation we saw tall and hefty Sardar ji. We asked him about his name. He told us that in reality his name is Natvarsingh. But nobody was able to pronounce his name correctly, therefore he started using his abridge name as ‘Nat.’ Anyway he was farmer and owner of about 150 acres of land that was producing apples, pistachios and almonds.(There are many Punjabi people in farming sector in California since last three generations). http://ayurveda-foryou.com 2 www.ayurved-int.com Ayurvedakarmayoga

He was 60 years and was suffering from hypertension and mild mitral stenosis. We advised him important life style changes like -Avoid meat, eggs, table salt, pickles, tea and coffee. Increase use of garlic, lemon, parsley, Indian gooseberry (amla), watermelon, grapefruit, skim milk, cottage cheese, meditation and . We also gave him mixture of Arjuna, Valerian, Gotu cola and Skull cap in dose of 1 gm. two time’s day for 30 days. He responded well to the treatment.

ADHD -In California we treated many children between 6 and 12 years who were suffering from ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) previously known as ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). Although it is mainly disease of children it is affecting Adults also. It is estimated that over 10 % of children and millions of Adults suffer from this disease. Nearly half the children grow up to be adults with ADHD. Of the 4 % adults having ADD have co-existing conditions like depression and anxiety. In this disease the child has trouble paying attention and focusing on tasks, tends to act without thinking, and has trouble sitting still. Children do not respond when spoken to directly. According to Ayurveda it is high Vata disorder. Loving and care givers should take care of such children. We gave them Anti Vata food with sweet and sour tastes and advised to take daily warm food and drinks and ghee. (We asked them to avoid all aerated soft drinks, microwave foods and excess sugar, salt, hydrogenated oil. To control high Vata we also advised daily whole body oil () with Ashwagandha oil and shiro massage with Bala oil. Internally we gave these children Bala in dose of 150 mg. + Ashwagandha powder 100 mg. Three times day for 2 months. The treatment was successful in many children. For Adults we gave them and Brahmi work excellent in this condition. In adults Mucuna prurience in dose of 150 mg. with Brahmi 250 mg. At night was very useful.

We also treated few patients suffering from Autism. This disease is growing in western Countries. It is a neuro -developmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition which affects individuals in two main areas: Individuals have impaired communication and social interaction. Individuals have restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests or activities. Studies also show that autism is four to five times more common among boys than girls. An estimated 1 out of 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States. ASD is estimated http://ayurveda-foryou.com 3 www.ayurved-int.com Ayurvedakarmayoga to affect more than 2 million individuals in the U.S. and tens of millions worldwide. Although the exact cause is not known, it may be related to mercury containing thiomersal which is used as preservative for many vaccines. We gave these patients Tab. Guduchi 250 mg. Twice day with powder of Ashwagandha 150 mg. In ghee two times day and Head Massage with Bala-Ashwagandha oil regularly. Majority of patients responded well when they were followed for more than 6 months.

Yoga for ADHD and Autism (ASD) – Initially it was very difficult to introduce Yoga for these children as they do not sit at one place for more than few minutes. However one of our students who is very good Yoga Teacher has invented novel approach to this. She has designed various postures in Animal poses like cat’s pose, dog’s pose etc. And then ask the children to practise these poses. This interests all the children and slowly they start with regular Yoga postures. We have found that Ayurvedic procedures, herbs and Yoga together works best for these two diseases.

Various experts say that Yoga helps to develop motor skills, improves confidence and social skills, it also provides sensory integration, facilitates self awareness, and helps for concentration. (www.mindbodygreen.com)

Counselling or finding good psychotherapist for both these diseases is also very important. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is helpful in reducing anxiety in these patients.
