PILOT MOUNTAIN — The Charles H. Stone Memor- ial Library is trying something new for its summer reading program this year. There will be three separate programs for different ages to allow the library staff to cater to the children better. There will be programs on Tuesdays for pre-school age children up to 5 years of age. Also on Tuesdays will be programs for elementary school age children, those ages 6 - 9. On Wednesdays, b’TWEEN the WAVES will be geared specifically towards 10, 11 and 12-year-olds for the first time. “We want them to have a program that’s their very own,” said Sandy Phillips, assistant librarian. The pre-school programs begin with a welcome cook- out on June 29 at 6 p.m. There will be hot dogs, chips, drinks and a puppet show for the whole family. It also is a chance to sign up for the programs for the rest of the sum- mer. On July 13 at 3 p.m., children will get to learn about The Wonders of Water through songs, stories and crafts about water. There will also be a duck float. On July 20 at 10 a.m., participants will get to Make a Splash as they enjoy fun with water including swimming pools and sprinklers. DOBSON — Dobson Community Library officials hope to be a hit with this year’s summer reading program. After a successful outing last year, Cindy Brannock, as- sistant branch librarian, is hoping for even better results for this year’s event which will feature programs and a chance to win prizes. “We had a really good year last year and I hope this year will be even better,” she said. The programs will kick off June 16 at 11 a.m. with a skit based on the book “The Man Who Walked Between the Towers.” It tells the story of a man who walked on a tightrope between the World Trade Center towers in 1974. On June 17 at 11 a.m., Brack Llewellyn will host a sto- ry-telling event. On June 24 at 11 a.m., Terri Ingalls will also do some storytelling. On July 1 at 11 a.m., Mark Daniel will wow partici- pants with his skills as a magician. Donna Pruett will close out the summer reading program on July 22 at 11 a.m. with her balloon skills. “We have these programs to encourage people to come to the library. ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE, Md. — President Barack Obama says the meaning of Memorial Day is found in the story of ordinary Americans who become ex- traordinary for one simple reason: love of country. Paying respects to the nation’s war dead, the command- er in chief says these fallen heroes had such a deep love of country that they willingly sacrificed their own lives to protect it. Obama says the nation owes them its security, prosperi- ty and freedoms, and that it falls to each of us to preserve them for future generations. The president spoke at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington after returning from Chicago. He was to speak earlier Monday at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Ill., but a severe thunderstorm halted the ceremony.
