The English Times

Term Two has been an exciting and prosperous time for the students and staff of English House. They have enjoyed the thrills and challenges of a delayed Interhouse Cross Country carnival. Students displayed their passion for their House and College on Open Day and have developed initiatives that allow everyone to offer their support and assistance to the local community.

STAFF UPDATE Mr Brad Andersen has taken on the role of House Coordinator (Middle Phase) for the remainder of the year. He replaced Mrs Sara Western, who is to be congratulated on the arrival of her beautiful young girl Layla. Mark Lucas (Eng 6) and Olivia Blackie (Eng 7), have both joined us in an exciting part of the year. They have both settled into their roles and immediately became involved in the life of the College with Mark assisting the Year 8 TAS Rugby team and Olivia becoming involved in the College’s vast music program.

HOUSE CHARITY On the second House Assembly of the term, three volunteers and their fire truck, from the Rural Fire Brigade, joined us. With so many students living in rural areas, they rely on the dedication and hard work of this important volunteer service. In the past few years we have had over five past students join the local brigade, which is overseen by a current staff member, Mr Eugene Tasker. The House Leaders presented them with a cheque for $1500, which was raised from various activities from 2013 including the House BBQ, cake stalls and Bid for a Buddy Day.

CLOTHES DRIVE As an Edmund Rice affiliated school we are always living in his footsteps and this term we decided to again launch the Winter Clothing Drive. A representative from the local St Vin cent de Paul spoke to the students about the importance of initiatives like this and shared various stories that depicted the lives and situations of those people in the community. The students left with a first hand account of who they will be help ing by donating their clothes. In 2013 we collected 7 bags of clothes but by the end of the term, there has been such a great response to the cause that we have taken over a shelf in the sports shed and the tally at the moment is 50 bags. If anyone has any unwanted clothing or blankets at home, please feel free to send them into school via the English House Coordinators.

ACTIVE LEADERS Every Friday the English House Captains, Vice Captains and Junior Leaders, visit the various PC’s to not only collect loose change for the House charity but to also build a relationship with all the English House students. Every week they are able to deliver a message, offer support or just have a chat with a student in need. It is a support structured that will be continued over the year and the networking between PC’s will encourage interaction and a channel of communication between students, House Leaders and House Coordinators.

THE FUTURE Term Three will see the revival of the PC breakfast were all English House students gather to share stories, buy a sausage on bread for charity and allows Two PC’s, a chance to put on a service for other members of their House. In August we will reflect on our faith, as students will partake in the House Mass under the guidance of Fr Wrex. Some new and exciting initiatives to be explored next term include the English House lunchtime activities day, Meet the Parents afternoon and the GARMA support drive. Keep your eye out for the next edition of the ‘English Times’ for more details.

Have a safe and relaxing holiday and we will see everyone in Term 3.

Brad Andersen & Luke Hamilton—English House Coordinators

Last week the Year 8 boys in O'Driscoll House celebrated the completion of their Rock & Water course, with an excursion to the Sunshine Coast. House coordinator Andrew Skinner and counsellor Dave Clarke had the pleasure of accompanying the lads on this activity, and the bus was kindly driven by Brendan Western.

Rock & Water is a worldwide and very popular programme that teaches some basic skills to young men, including:

* Practical AntiBullying strategies * Alternatives to aggressive verbal and physical responses to fear and doubt * Thinking and being in control, through grounding, centeredness and mental focus * Self respect, self control and self confidence

Rock & Water bases these teachings on a boy being able to choose between a Rock (assertive and firm) behaviour and a Water (passive and conciliatory) behaviour, and how to make this choice. The O'Driscoll boys engaged enthusiastically throughout term 1, and are keen to learn more in the future.

The climb up this large rock, followed by a cooling swim at nearby Marcoola Beach, was a fitting "Rock & Water" celebration indeed, and one that the Duhig boys are now working towards for next term.

TAS Awards Night—Trimester 2

Once again, the Trimester 2 Awards night has seen us celebrating an extremely successful trimester of sport at St Columban’s. With 8 of the 23 teams this trimester playing in premiership games and another 6 playing for 3 rd place.

Congratulations to Darren Crilly and his rugby coaches for another successful season – Rugby Premier school for the 3 rd year in a row. The 1 st XV team was also crowned the Premiers for the 3rd year in a row. Again it has been the dedication and efforts of the coaches and players that have resulted in this achievement. Netball finished 2 nd this year, only 2 points behind JPC and overall as a College we finished 4 th this trimester, due to the efforts of all of our TAS teams combined. Well done and Congratulations on your efforts.

Our Premiership winning teams were 1st XV Rugby, and Year 9B netball teams. The 2nds, Year 10 and Year 8 Rugby and Open C, Year 9A and Year 8A Netball teams all finished in 2 nd place.

Again I would like to recognize the fact that this success is determined by a number of factors. 1. The commitment of our players to attend games and training and to give it their best shot. 2. The assistance of parents to score and transport our students to and from games and trainings and 3. The commitment of our coaches and especially our coordinators who give of their time, enthusiasm, knowledge and love of the game and provide out students with the opportunities they receive. 4. Finally the community spirit that is so strong within our College, with the support shown by parents, past students and current students to coach, referee, score and support the teams from the sidelines.

Thanks must also go to the P&F for their running of the BBQs and the support they provide to TAS through funds raised from these BBQs, to Mrs Nedra Rose, the coordination of the College’s first aid who ensures we have the highest level of coverage at games and to the coaches and sports coordinators for giving of their time and experience. And finally, to Mr Brad Anderson for his assistance in organizing the TAS sports and pack up and set up for the sports on Saturday.

Congratulations to all our award winners for (see table on next page), who through their sportsmanship, fair play and leadership have played an integral role in the success of their teams. All team members though need to be congratulated on their efforts and achievements and we hope to see a continuation of these high standards over the remainder of the year.

The time has finally come! This Saturday morning, at the lively time of 3am, the students and staff of the St Columban’s Arts and Cultural Tour of the USA will depart. It has been quite the journey already, two years in fact since the idea first came about, and after many, many days of counting down, the time has indeed finally come.

Thirteen students and four staff are heading off on the tour that begins on the East Coast of the United States of America, in New York City. Five days of live theatre experiences, drama workshops, audition workshops, visits to the MET, the 911 memorial, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, backstage tours, and no doubt a little bit of shopping, will kick off the tour.

The ‘USA Tourists’ (L to R) (B) Johnpaul Gonzo, Kyle Lacey-Janetzki, Miky Wilkie, Chloe McMahon, Blake Boyle, Eilish Massie & Hannah Jus- tice (F) Ashleigh Schat, Gemma Boyd, Leticia Boyle, Carly Bryan, Georgia Blundell & Tessa Harrison.

A quick flight to Las Vegas where we will indulge in more live theatre, theatre tours, enjoy the magic of the ‘Vegas Strip’, head out to the desert and perhaps enjoy some of the magical live street theatre that will bring the Strip to life on the 4 July.

What would an Arts tour be without a stop in LA? Here the students will experience some more workshops, tour Hollywood Boulevard, Rodeo Drive, the Hollywood walk of Fame, Grauman’s Chinese theatre and more!

We wrap up the tour in Anaheim, with two days in Universal Studios and Disneyland, working with the ‘Disney Team’ for a performance lab workshop.

We are all looking forward to the tour and the excitement that has been building over the last few weeks is electric. This will indeed be the trip of a lifetime, and we can’t wait to share the amazing experiences on our return.

Finally, a big thank you to all of our supporters and to our major sponsors, Brisbane’s Art Shed, suppliers of Visual Art materials, and QUT Caboolture Campus. Thank you!

Year 10 Work Experience

What fabulous feedback we have had so far on our Year 10s who are representing themselves, the College and their families in the workplace. Students have travelled as far as and Amberley and the vocations are as varied as Police Weaponry, Defence Force, Law, Retail, Construction, Fitness, Education and many, many more.

I have been asked why we expect our students to embark on mandatory Work Experience in Year 10. Working in the Career & Training Centre, I see time and time again what a good reference and prior experience in the workplace does for a young person embarking into the world of work or even applying for scholarships etc. Not only has their confidence soared by stepping outside the comfort zone of the schoolyard, but they have the opportunity to dip their toes into the industry they find interests them before choosing their senior subjects. It is inevitable that not all students are able to find placement in their industry of choice, especially as Caboolture has a limited number of industries represented, however the most important aspect is experience in the workplace.

May I take this opportunity to thank our Year 10s for their positive representation in the community and to the community for giving our students an opportunity to learn?
