VOLLEYBALL HISTORY

Volleyball returned to DeKalb County high schools for the first time in two decades during the fall of 2000 campaign. Boys and girls on the local level both once played volleyball on a yearly basis from the late 1960s until the sport was finally dropped following the 1980 season. Led by private school powers Westminster, Marist and Woodward Academy, volleyball remained alive as primarily a met- ro Atlanta push through the rest of the 1980s and the entire 1990s. Enthusiasm in the sport continued to pick up steam behind strong showings by the USA men and women on the Olympic and international scenes. The 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, in particular, seemed to generate increased excitement and partici- pation in volleyball. Cobb County has ranked as the most successful among public schools from the start in the battle for volleyball supremacy. Walton, Sprayberry and Lassiter stand at the top of this crowded list. Volleyball, however, remains a work in progress outside of the metro Atlanta area. Savannah is one strong exception to this case, with Savannah Christian and Savannah Country Day heading up a long list of eligible and talented entrants. Athens, Augusta, Brunswick, Carrollton, Cartersville, Dallas, Dalton, Fairburn, Forsyth, Gainesville, Loganville, Monroe, Rome and Villa Rica are among the other areas that have seen dramatic growth among both the public and private school participa- tion in volleyball over the last five years. The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) has taken notice of this increased enthusiasm, sanctioning the state tourna- ment for the first time beginning in the 1993 season. Marist, Woodward Academy and Westminster took turns dominating the state field in an open event for all classifications from 1993 -98. Coach Sergio Stadler ’s Marist machine claimed a pair of state titles during this period, running the table in both 1994 and 1997. Woodward Academy matched that total with victorious efforts in both 1993 and 1996, while Westminster walked away with the top prize in 1995. The state championship hunt was opened considerably with the decision to divide the field up into classifications starting in 1998. Two state trophies were thus up for grabs in both 1998 and 1999, with Walton and Marist claiming consecutive triumphs in AAAA and AAA respectively in those years. The field was divided even more in the fall of 2000. Four separate prizes were handed out in AAAAA, AAAA, AAA and AA/A. Walton (AAAAA), Marist (AAAA), Westminster (AAA) and Savannah Country Day (AA/A) earned state crowns in those respective divisions. Lakeside (7AAAAA) and Avondale (4AAA) shined brightest in volleyball’s return to DeKalb County in 2000, claiming area tournament titles in their respective leagues. Cross Keys also earned a sectional tournament berth as the runnerup to Avondale in 4AAA. Lakeside repeated as Area 7AAAAA champion in 2001, and Redan (7AAAAA), Columbia (1AAAA) and Druid Hills (1AAA) also snared state sectional tournament berths after placing second in their respective area clashes. A new chapter was added in 2002, as Lakeside became the first DeKalb County school to qualify for the state tournament in AAAAA. Druid Hills joined Lakeside as area champions. Chamblee, meanwhile, established a new county victory standard during the 2005 campaign, soaring to a stellar 56 -8 show- ing that included a berth in the state Class AAAA Final Four. Lakeside added another memorable performance to the local list of highlights in 2012, soaring all the way to the state Class AAAAA tournament semifinals on the way to posting a stellar 29 -7 final overall record under coach Angela Thompson . Dunwoody joined the select group of DeKalb County squads to shine in the state tournament during the 2013 season, ad- vancing to the AAAAA semifinals behind victories over Warner Robins, Hiram and Apalachee. Coach Doug Friedlander ’s Lady Wildcats posted a 29 -14 final record. The Lady Wildcats advanced to the AAAAA semifinals again in 2014 and 2015, finishing 43 -5 and 37 -15 respectively dur- ing those memorable campaigns.

2017 VOLLEYBALL IN REVIEW Chamblee’s return to the state quarterfinals served as the top highlight among many for DeKalb County squads during the 2017 volleyball season. Coach Lorri Reynolds guided her Lady Bulldogs to the third round of the state Class AAAAA competition for the second straight year and fifth time in school history, where a familiar opponent ended any ultimate prize dreams. Powerhouse McIntosh knocked off Chamblee by a 3 -0 score, taking the three games by the respective counts of 25 -17, 25 - 17 and 25 -11. On the way to finishing 28 -12 overall, the Lady Bulldogs also registered state triumphs over Rome (25 -13; 25 -13; 25 -14) and Decatur (25 -19; 25 -20; 25 -20) in the first two rounds. Several players shined on the individual level for Chamblee, led by sophomore outside hitter -setter Becca Evans , junior middle -outside hitter Camille Van Leer and senior setter Rachel Loftus . Evans finished second in the county in digs (214) and took third in aces (103) and kills (226). Van Leer ranked among the county leaders in kills (164) and blocks (54). Loftus led the county in assists (711) and also added 99 digs. Lakeside in AAAAAAA, Arabia Mountain in AAAAA, Clarkston in AAAAA, Miller Grove in AAAAA, Southwest DeK- alb in AAAAA, Druid Hills in AAAA, Redan in AAA and Stone Mountain AAA also earned state berths to run DeKalb County’s overall number of postseason qualifiers to nine. Coach Angela Thompson ’s Lakeside team advanced to the big dance for the ninth straight year, securing the No. 3 seed from Area 7 -AAAAAAA behind Brookwood and Norcross. The Lady Vikings dropped a 3 -0 decision to North Forsyth in the first round of state and finished the season with a 19 -18 overall record. Senior outside hitter Gabrielle Morse and senior middle blocker Tyja Traore shined brightest among several individual stars for an experienced Lakeside squad that listed six players in the individual county leader races. Morse topped the county in average kills per match (6.4) with 238 and also registered 108 digs, while Traore placed first in the county in average blocks per match (2.4) with 88 and added 102 kills. Coach Bruce Pfleger guided Arabia Mountain to a runner -up finish behind Chamblee in Area 5 -AAAAA and a No. 2 seed at the state Class AAAAA tournament. The Lady Rams dropped three straight games to Kell by the scores of 25 -3, 25 -17 and 25 -17 in the first round of state and posted a stellar 21 -12 final overall mark. Junior setter Deja McLeod , senior middle blocker Odette Nawave and senior outside hitter Ifeoma Foreman led the way from an individual standpoint for the Lady Rams. Southwest DeKalb soared to a strong 19 -11 final record on the way to placing third in Area 5 -AAAAA as a team and quali- fying for state for the fourth straight year. Coach Kristina Parrish ’s Lady Panthers drew a trip to Hiram in the first round of state, falling by a 3 -0 count to the No. 2 seed from Area 7 -AAAAA. Coach Pamela Flowers and the Miller Grove Lady Wolverines advanced to state for the third time in the last four years as the No. 4 seed from Area 5 -AAAAA. Miller Grove came up on the short end of a 3 -0 decision to McIntosh in the first round of state and finished the season with a winning final record of 18 -14. Coach Joie Bullock ’s Clarkston Lady Angoras advanced to state for the first time in school history, snaring the No. 5 seed from Area 5 -AAAAA. Clarkston fell by a 3 -0 count to Carrollton in the first round of state and finished the season with an 8 -27 final overall rec- ord. Coach Adrienne Johnson ’s Druid Hills Lady Red Devils secured a state berth as the No. 4 seed from Area 4 -AAAA and dropped a 3 -0 decision to Upson Lee in the first round on the way to finishing 13 -14 overall on the year. Coach Charlyce Henderson ’s Redan Lady Raiders secured a state berth as the No. 2 seed from Area 5 -AAA and fell by a 3 - 0 count to East Hall in the first round while finishing the year with a super 22 -8 final mark. Coach Mary Cromer ’s Stone Mountain Lady Pirates returned to state for the second straight year as the No. 3 seed from Area 5 -AAA and lost a 3 -0 decision to GAC in the first round in posting a 16 -12 final record. REGULAR SEASON AND TOURNAMENT INFORMATION

REGULAR SEASON:

A. Volleyball is organized on an Area basis with a state championship in seven (7) classifications. Beginning and ending dates for practice and competition can be found at the front of this publication.

B. The National Federation Volleyball rules committee has given each state its option about the number of games that determine a match.

1. Area matches shall be best -of -three unless ALL teams in the Area agree (prior to the start of the season) to play best -of -five. A team may only play one best -of -five match per day. Championship matches in the Area Tournament may be best -of -five, and all post -season play after Area Tournaments shall be best -of -five. 2. Non -area dual matches may use the best -of -five format on nights before a school day. 3. In non -area competitions that occur in a tournament or play -day format, the third set shall be played to fifteen (15) points.

C. Notification of entry in Volleyball must be filed in writing with the GHSA State Office no later than April 1, for the next school year. Schools will be assigned by the GHSA Executive Director to a geographic area for competition, and then will be notified of that assignment.

D. Playing dates:

1. Schools have a maximum of 18 playing dates regardless of whether or not it is a tournament format or head -to -head competition (each day of a tournament equals one playing date). Area and State playoffs are not counted as part of the allotted playing dates. 2. An invitational tournament is defined as three (3) or more schools competing in a single or double elimination format that leads to a champion being declared. The use of pool play is acceptable. 3. The maximum number of days for an invitational tournament is two (2) days. 4. No school shall enter any tournament unless it has been approved by the GHSA Executive Director. 5. Regular season playing dates on days/nights preceding a school day shall be limited to no more than three matches per court per night. (a) dual matches - must start no later than 7:00 p.m. (b) multiple matches - must start no later than 6:00 p.m. 6. In accordance with National Federation rules, teams may use multi -colored balls in the regular season and post -season competitions. 7. Schools may have tryouts that are limited to a maximum of five consecutive school days between May 1 and the last day students are in school. REGULAR SEASON AND TOURNAMENT INFORMATION

AREA AND STATE PLAYOFFS:

A. Each Area may determine its procedure for selecting teams for the playoffs. The Area may use regular season records and not have an Area Tournament. That choice must be submitted to the GHSA Volleyball Coordinators before the first competition date of the regular season. 1. The number of teams advancing from each Area to the State Playoffs shall be set by the Executive Director. 2. All finances (including officials’ game fees and travel) will be the responsibility of the Area. 3. Ticket prices are to be set at $5.00 for all persons. 4.
