PPRR President’s Update The 68th Annual Range Ride began seemingly as usual, in downtown Colorado Springs with 147 horses and riders. What many people may not know is that this is the first year that the Street Breakfast was facilitated without participation of the Pikes Peak Sertoma Club. Kevin Kaveney and Travis Weins head- ed up the first solo run of the Colorado Springs Western Street Breakfast under the structural umbrella of the Pikes Peak Range Riders Foundation. My appreciation goes out to the efforts of the dedicated crew who made the event successful at several levels, and to the Foundation Board of Directors for assisting us in this transition.

The ride itself took place at the JV Ranch in Tarryall, Colorado, where we were hosted by the Venezia Family. This was our third attempt at returning to the Tarryall region since our last ride there in 1992, which was ironically the last ride attended by Member John Venezia before his untimely death. We attempted to return to the region in 2005 under President Guy Dobbin, but were met with logistical problems that caused us to change the ride location to the Campbell Ranch in Guffey, Colorado,a blessing in disguise that has created a long-standing relationship with the Campbell Family. The most recent attempt was in 2012, when wildfires throughout the state caused us to change the ride location to The Bear Basin Ranch in Westcliffe, Colorado, just seven days before the ride.

The return to Tarryall certainly proved to be worth the wait under the planning of Co-Ride Directors Dean Venezia and Brad Renehan, with the assistance of their many Ride Committees that worked so hard to make this ride an overall success. We not only enjoyed an incredible camp site filled with new tents, and rode through some breath-taking scenery along the historic Colorado Trail, but we managed to avoid so much as a drop of rain. The only measurable moisture was provided by the Tarryall River, which not only created the camp boundary, but which also accommodated the bathing needs of some of our more adventurous members and guests, proving once again that some sights can never be unseen.

The Race and Layover games consisted of Team Sorting and Drifting events, Head to Head and a two-person relay race, which not only provided for great entertainment, but culminated with our Ride Director/Land Owner Host, Dean Venezia, being awarded the All-Around Cowboy Buckle.

I'm proud to declare this ride as a complete success, and would be remiss if I didn't also thank and acknowledge the Operating Committees, our 2016 Board of Directors, the Camp, Commissary and Wrangler Crews, and finally, the entire group of 160 participants of The 68th Annual Range Ride.

Mark Cohrs, PPRR President Pikes Peak Range Rider Pivots PIVOT News

The excitement of summer has been in full swing. The Range Ride went well, and we all had a great time at a great place. Thank you to JV Ranches and the Venezia family for a great ride this year. The pivots were very busy in July and we looked forward to opening many shows. First and foremost was the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo. It was four days of fun and excitement that started on July 13th. Then the Pivots moved to Manassa Days, in Manassa, Colorado. We had two performances there on the weekend of July 23rd. Then we were off to Burlington for the weekend of July 30th. We hoped you were able to catch some of these rodeos and join in the fun of some of these performances.

As fall approaches, we will be planning the family ride to enjoy the great outdoors and cooler weather. We will keep everyone updated as we move forward in another GREAT year of performances and fun. Thank you goes out to all who have helped us make everything go as smoothly as it has this year.

Greg Budwine, Pivot Secretary Spirit Committee Update Art Silhouettes, Coloring Contest, Calendars, Mixer, and Parade Participating in the silhouette art project were Air Academy, Colorado Springs Conservatory, Fountain-Fort Carson, Griffith Centers for Children, James Irwin, Lewis-Palmer, Miami-Yoder, Panorama, and St Mary’s; placing 1st was St. Mary’s, 2nd Fountain-Fort Carson and 3rd Air Academy Ceramics.

Businesses displaying the silhouettes were ProRodeo Hall of Fame, Big R (Fountain and Monument), Boot Barn (Academy), Cavenders, Clerk and Recorder (Airport and Powers), El Paso County Citizen Center (), Farmers State Bank (Calhan), Latigo, Plaza of the Rockies, and Wal-Mart (8th Street, Falcon and Woodland Park). The silhouettes were on display during the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo.

Coloring contest entries increased 4X thanks to the support of Chick-fil-A. The mixer was declared a success and the plans are to work with Pikes Peak Range Riders and Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo to gain more support of the event. The silhouettes, coloring contests, and Kiddie Dress-Up winners were on a float in the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Parade.

Colorado Springs Western Street Breakfast The transition from Sertoma to the Pikes Peak Range Riders was smooth, and the June 15th street breakfast was by some reports the best yet. Attendance, sponsorships, and number of meals served were up; combine that with a committee that worked together as a team to make the breakfast successful and set the stage for continued growth. The street breakfast committee is very appreciative of the support of the Pikes Peak Range Riders Foundation. Calendar of Events
